Obviously the actual first is Invasion, but each of these sowed the seeds for UNIT and gave birth to parts of the formula - WM the contemporary earth invasion with some level of topical commentary, WF old Lethbridge and giving military supporting characters greater focus. But which is closer to what would be termed a 'UNIT story' and which was arguably the bigger influence? Which would be UNIT Zero, essentially?

I think War Machines is the birth of the genre of “Doctor defends roughly contemporary Earth from invasion/mad science” but I don’t feel like the supporting characters are proto-UNIT in the same way they are in Web of Fear.

Web of Fear is more prototypically UNIT-y, but I offer Tenth Planet as “base under Seige, Doctor & companions allied with and against the military, with a combination of understandable technology and technobabble” as the prototypical prototype of a UNIT story.

Can't say I agree personally., but an interesting thought.

War Machines definitely an embryo story for the next 2 phases of the show.
