We've been receiving a lot of reported items which amount to disagreements with what was posted, and have in no way violated rules.
In light of this recent trend the Moderation Team has decided to address this publicly with a reminder that everyone has a right to their opinion and is free to express it within the rules. Those who disagree can likewise express their disagreement, again within the rules. We invite all members to take a step back and ask themselves whether posts they are reporting actually contain rule violations, or if they are really just looking to deny others their right to free speech.
We are seeking to ensure that everyone feels welcome, free and safe to participate in discussion, and would like to remind you that there is a function for blocking members in the event that the decision is made that someone's views make it difficult to comfortably participate.

This seem to be modern trend where people would rather report something than post an opposing point of view as a rebuttal to something. It's almost like to some people there is only one opinion on anything!

So just so we're clear a curt or to the point Reply is Ok then? Regards mark687 Mark, we all know the person you're alluding to can be a bit abrupt. Just let them. It does get a little tiresome to see every negative comment followed by a "well don't buy it". I think we can take it as a given that if someone hates a story idea, they won't buy it. They are still able to say they hate the story idea.

Not something I've had much success with over recent years!

As an aside, I've noticed a trend for MPs in Parliament to raise points of order to get a guaranteed speaking slot to air their views rather than because there is a genuine point of order

Regards mark687 I think it's more that they want everyone to be able to air their opinion, even if nobody else agrees. Look how the discussion about Charley has settled down nicely on the other thread. Nobody's trying to shut down anyone else's opinion even though it looked for a second as though it might descend into mud-slinging.

Well, there's quite a bit of stuff out there for free these days, which I'm thankful for as I've not bought any Big Finish for a couple of years and it's even longer since I bought enough to get a Christmas card from them.

There would possibly be a point to all that if the user in question wasn’t just “JohnHurtDoctor” on an alt, but very likely the same user as “TheThirdDoctor”, if anyone remembers them from way back. The lesser part of a decade of being abrasive and annoying. Which if this was a genuine facet of their person, sure thats not a reason to remove them, doctor who fans can be like that. But, this is a clear case of antagonising, and consistent trolling for the sake of upsetting others. I think the mods would like people to forget how many people left here because of that one, singular user.
I think, much like the big finish forum that predated this, what made here ultimately a failure* like its predecessor is treating this like an online space from the 2000’s, when thats just not possible in todays online world. Because using that idea of being fair and following the rules is far too easy to be abused by people acting in bad faith. Ultimately, to Cultivate any sort of positive online space in 2023, you need to treat it as one big group chat, especially for a place as small as this. Even one bad actor can make a place toxic. And much like a group chat, if someones upsetting others, you don’t deliberate for years on end - you remove them.
It’s too late now really - the creatives and cool users who would frequent here have long since moved on, but that’s because of the mods unwavering attitude to not move with the times. Of course, this isn’t the most egregious example, the fact that DB and K stayed here as long as they did, and things got to the point they did with them is regrettable, especially considering how those situation's ended. A lesser focus on bureaucracy and following a more emotional and common sense would have worked out far better. Especially as things stand, there is nothing in place to stop that kind of situation arising again. But hey, can’t change what’s already done and hindsight is 20/20, can’t say for certain i’d have made different choices. Just sad looking back i guess.
* and i do just mean failure in a sense of growth, relevancy and avoiding the same pitfalls of the old place. Of course this place has helped others through some terrible times, and maybe thats all that matters really..

Of course this place has helped others through some terrible times, and maybe thats all that matters really.. I guess you're on your second username then? You don't talk like someone who only joined in March this year. I certainly haven't forgotten any of those things. It wasn't people like johnhurtdoctor making negative comments about aspects of Doctor Who they disliked who made me take long breaks from this place. It was the people who couldn't let a negative comment go without attacking the people who made them, or the people who hounded timegirl from the forum (I still worry about her, she was clearly a fragile soul, and we should never underestimate how much we can hurt people when we can't tolerate that they're different to us). As long as nobody's attacking anyone else, then I'd say freedom of speech is more important than having a space where everyone agrees with you.

A note from the moderation team about the discussion on this thread and commentaries on the original post:
Being provocative is a two-way street, and is often in the eye of the reader. Some things that have been reported to us as provocative or attempting to stir up trouble have not been viewed that way by the moderation team.
If you don't like someone's opinion or the way they say it, you are free to ignore what they say. You are not obligated to respond to every post you don't like or refute it. And remember that the written word has no tone - so you may be reading something into a post that was not intended by the person posting. The fact of the matter is that we mods have had to deal with an inordinate number of complaints in which someone doesn't like the way someone else is saying something and feels duty bound to report it. In most cases the reported posts break no rules. Most of the reports have been coming from a very small number of forum members. So it seems that most forum members are either not bothered or ignore it if they don't like the way someone posts. Some of the people who have been involved in these issues have been contacted privately and we moderators hope they will keep in mind what was said between them and the mods. Responding to someone in public because you don't like what they post and/or the way they post it only escalates matters and aggravates other forum members, who would otherwise just let the reported remark pass.
I'm not outing people, mentioning names, or making anything public.
If you have an accusation about a forum member - with evidence to back it up - feel free to report it to the mods and we will consider the evidence and discuss it.
Thanks for reading.
- The Moderation Team

From which we deduce that, err - someone or other - must have a very, very small BF Grand Total. Not something I've had much success with over recent years! Well, there's quite a bit of stuff out there for free these days, which I'm thankful for as I've not bought any Big Finish for a couple of years and it's even longer since I bought enough to get a Christmas card from them. I've NEVER had a Christmas card from BF! And I've bought enough CDs to mean (A) I should send a Christmas card to the gallant warehouse staff and (B) every postie who does this round wishes our letterbox was bigger so they could just shove the boxsets through instead of having to wait for me to come to the door, again.
I am therefore outraged and demand a Christmas card from BF! Backdated annually to 2015.
(If you were joking about such cards, as my reply was (OK yes you all got that bit), then consider me well and truly hooked and landed. )

(If you were joking about such cards, as my reply was (OK yes you all got that bit), then consider me well and truly hooked and landed. ) Nope, I did indeed get one once. I'd been away from Big Finish for a while and was horrified to realise how much my return had cost me in one year. So.... Many.... Sales!!! All sadly in the past. I'm retired now, with no banker's bonuses to feed my addiction

I'm retired now, with no banker's bonuses to feed my addiction I don't know if any fans have had cards since Paul and Ian's time, sadly. I've got 3 with the nicest being the Dalek in the snow watercolour signed by Ian, Nick, Jason, Paul McGann and Hattie Morahan. It was always a lovely surprise but since that was when BF and their fans were a lot closer - official forum et al - I guess it's not surprising it's been stopped. Also random CDs would arrived being signed by the cast and crew, that was something that used to happen and I've not heard of in years now.

I have two full scripts with the front pages signed by the cast and crew of that story, one script even has annotations on it, words circled, underlined, (etc.) throughout. These - I believe - were subscribers perks and they arrived randomly in big brown envelopes... after that it was just the front page(s) of the script that arrived signed, not the whole script, as the postage was probably extortionate... I've a couple of them too. They were the good old days where you felt you were appreciated so had no bother renewing your subscription when it came around. Even taking out the 'super sub' wasn't a big deal as it was like a Big Finish club and being part of it was a good feeling.

I've got two script fronts - Voyage To Venus signed by Colin, Trevor and Christopher and a Counter Measures signed by the cast. But, like Mark, no full scripts. Would have loved that! And yes, it did used to feel more like a club and we just paid our dues like any club. Not - as naive as it seems to some probably - customer and company. To more recent listeners, I bet all this talk of christmas cards, signed CDs and scripts is completely foreign, so different is the BF to fan relationship now.

Those were the days when the Big Finish tag-line was subscribers get more, now it's for the love of stories... which is not quite the same thing. But times change and businesses grow.
This chat has given me such a warm glow of nostalgia I have just pre-ordered the Sontarans v Rutans bundle!
