I'm curious if anyone has any Big Finish recommendations - either recent or old. Blimey, I've got loads. The Avengers Lost Stories 1-7, just about anything from Blake's 7 (full cast or Liberator Chronichles). Survivors begins well, and then goes down a road that I really didn't like with the last three or four sets, Dark Shadows is a favourite and anything from that range is recommended, Dorian Gray too. And The Omega Factor. The Prisoner was a lot better than I thought it would be. And Sherlock Holmes is an excellent range that rrely gets the attention it deserves.
As for Doctor Who - well just about anything from audio Torchwood is better (in my view) than just about anything from telly Torchwood. Jago and Litefoot is great fun: dark stories in charming company, and The Robots is excellent. For the Doctors, my current favourites include anything from Doctor 3, Doctor 1 the War Doctor and the 8th Doctor. Second on the list would be Doctor 4, 5 and 9, and thirdly would be Doctors 2, 6 and 7 (this is no comment on the Doctors themselves, rather the quality of the stories).
Any of the above I would heartily recommend. Perhaps have a look on the website and see if you can pick any bargains.

I'm curious if anyone has any Big Finish recommendations - either recent or old. This was a list I drew up of favourite story by Doctor about four years ago, and surprised myself a bit today by finding I still largely agree with it.
1 Farewell, Great Macedon 2 Lords of the Red Planet 3 Vol 3. Storm of the Horofax / The Conquest of Far 4 PHP: The Ghosts of Gralstead / The Devil's Armada (very narrowly from The Foe From the Future.) 5 The Emerald Tiger 6 And the Pirates 7 A Death in the Family (but you need to have heard most if not all of Sixie's and Seven's previous MR stories first.) 8 Ravenous 2 (The 'Krampus' two-parter, glorious)
And of course, anything at all with Jago & Litefoot! 'J&L & Strax' is on special offer right now and is a lot of fun.
The original 'Counter-Measures' are four terrific volumes and the Early Adventures were a brilliant range ('The Dalek Invasion of Winter' and 'The Ravelli Conspiracy' are two excellent and totally contrasting First Doctor examples).
And outside of science fiction, if you like 70s spy fiction, 'Callan' is outstanding.

I'm curious if anyone has any Big Finish recommendations - either recent or old. I could do a list a mile long... it would be easier to list the Big Finish stories I wouldn't recommend! But what are you looking for, Doctor Who or non-Doctor Who?
In the Whoniverse from recent years, Dalek Universe springs to mind. I joke about there being very little Dalek action but it's as good as it gets when it comes to storytelling and the three sets make up a fulfilling journey that really is top notch Who.
From the old "Doctor Who Main Range" there's a lot of really good stories and most can be picked up fairly cheaply now. The obligatory Jubilee / Spare Parts / Chimes of Midnight need to get a mention but there is so much more worth listening to from those twenty two great years of Doctor Who monthly adventures.
The 4DA's / Jago & Litefoot / War Doctor / Counter Measures / Survivors / Confessions of Dorian Gray are all Big Finish ranges worth getting in to. Once you dip your toes in though, splash, you're in deep!!!
Personally I liked UFO too, but I'm old and remember the TV series. It is good though. So the Gerry Anderson stuff is also worth a shout.
Very little that Big Finish do is poor, there's something in every range really. It's more down to what your personal tastes and favourite Doctors are... (etc.)

There is too much to count.
Of the recent releases, get Friend of the Family. No prior knowledge or other box sets necessary. You just have to know who River Song is. I even recommend this to people who do not like River. Just because it is such a wonderful, heartfelt story. River is also not as much "in your face" in this. In addition to being a wonderful story, it is also an intricate timey-whimey audio-puzzle. I have nothing but praise for this. And not one single Dalek in sight!
The Jago and Litefoot series. No discussion about it- it is VERY good.
Most of the 8th Doctor stories. I loved the big blockbuster action boxsets of Doom Coalition and Ravenous. I know not everybody liked them, but they are still among my favorites.
One thing- avoid "Exile" at all costs. Really. It is THAT bad. Believe me, you will not be able to "unhear" this and there will only be regret. You have been warned.

Because tastes vary so wildly my recommendation would be to go for the cheap main range stuff. Pick a doctor (eight or six would be especially worthwhile IMO, but if you prefer five or seven, fair enough) and follow them through. Far better to find you hate a £2.99 title than a £24.99 one

Far, far too many. Can you narrow it down a bit for us? What kind of story are you looking for? Any particular favorite Doctors or Companions or villains? Do you like stories set in outer space with aliens, or in Earth's past, or Earth's present, or Earth's future? Are you looking for something more dramatic or more humorous? Something long, possibly serialized, or something shorter, more episodic? Big Finish's oeuvre is enormous. I've only listened to a fraction of all there is, and I've long thought I needed to craft a spreadsheet simply to keep track of all the fantastic stories I most loved -- and why -- to better be able to recommend them. Because when it comes to threads like this... we can only ever, collectively, remember to recommend so much. There is too much to count. Of the recent releases, get Friend of the Family. No prior knowledge or other box sets necessary. You just have to know who River Song is. I even recommend this to people who do not like River. Just because it is such a wonderful, heartfelt story. It is THAT bad. Believe me, you will not be able to "unhear" this and there will only be regret. You have been warned. 100% agree with all of this. Well, I'm not as enamored with what I've heard of J&G, but still. This is dead-on. To briefly elaborate on that last point: yes, Exile really is that bad. And no, you shouldn't listen to it out of morbid curiosity. It's not bad in an interesting way: it's both offensive and tediously dull at the same time. An incredible low-point for a medium that has generally managed a higher average level of quality (IMO, of course) than televised 'Who.' That said, implicit in all of this is that the first batch of 'Doctor Who Unbound' stories are utterly spectacular, 'Exile' notwithstanding. If you're brand new to Big Finish audio dramas, they're one of the best places to start. And... after you're acquainted with David Warner's Unbound Doctor, the just-as-excellent 'New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield' range continues his stories (beginning with NABS 3; ignore NABS 1 and 2, they're not very good). All of which works really well as an entry point because it's both very familiar to the Doctor Who from the TV series... as well as very unique in tone, if not necessarily content. And David Warner and Lisa Bowerman have quite possibly the best chemistry/dynamic between any pair of actors you could think of.
