Everything about this release is stellar. I loved every second. Yes, there are no sci fi elements in The Merfolk Murders, it is just a terrific story with a wonderful cast. And the Dream Crab story is excellent. It felt to me like it may have been written for the CDNM set but then wasn't needed. I will certainly re-listen to this one again soon.

Merfolk Murders - superb, character driven story that makes as much of it's guest stars as it does the regulars. Davison and co are on fine form and the whole production shines. Audio drama thrives on good dialogue and this doesn't disappoint. Tim Foley loves words almost as much as Matthew Sweet and must surely have elevated himself as Big Finishes current 'go to' writer by now. I'll be relistening to this very soon and wish that more audios focused on original elements rather than 'x meets y' with at much devotion more often.
That said Dream Crabs was pretty awesome too! Best Davison box set since The Lost Resort.

The Dream Team.
Even this TARDIS team aren’t immune to a hard sell. What I like about this story is that a (perhaps) lesser-known TV adversary is brought back in very original circumstances – although corporate exploitation has been visited many times in Doctor Who, this is somewhat different. The tricks played on Tegan’s mind must remind her of the influence of The Mara (isn’t it time for another Mara story, BF?). The cliffhanger’s a good one, quickly resolved – a death in paradise indeed. As I said in my earlier bit of nonsense on this thread, the 5DAs seem to simply breeze along without any gimmicks, just delivering the goods and making it all seem effortless. Peter Davison and co could play their roles in their sleep by now, but they continue to invest in these stories – Matthew Waterhouse is particularly good here – which is especially impressive considering that the four regulars are the only cast members here. This is another imaginative, somewhat claustrophobic story from the wonderful Lizzie Hopley – one of the two very impressive writers on this highly recommended set. “Tegan, you can’t just destroy the furniture!”

I had a forehead smacking moment in the second "Dream Team" episode.
"That's a giant Huntsman. One of them bit me once. I walked into it's web".
They do not spin webs. They can spin silk, but they use it for egg sacs. I think I've read that they sometimes spin silk to descend something to quickly escape a predator. Though they have no problem running at lightspeed along vertical walls, so I'm not sure how true that last bit is.

Those are rare, and I typically love them. I'd also love that BF gets back to doing the occasional straight historical, with time travel and the only out of place thing is something like Evelyn having medications from her time with her.

I've not listened to the second story yet, but the Merfolk Murders is definitely one of my favourite stories in a very long time.
Great storytelling, lots of guessing (and me being wrong a lot!), and a satisfying finish.
Not since last year's 4DA series with Margaret have I been feeling it, with most releases seeming pretty average so this was a brilliant pleasant surprise.

The Merfolk Murders by Tim Foley is brilliant. He is currently the best writer working for BF.

All through Merfolk Murders the words 'Atticus Pund' and 'Magpie Murders' kept wandering through my mind. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The conceit of there being a series of Golden Age detective novels based on the Doctor's exploits, written by a companion whilst holidaying in Baker Street, is just begging for a set of its own, though.

Listening to the first story. Is it just me or in comparison to Wales and Ireland, is Scotland massively over-represented in Big Finish? Feels like a lot of stories set there in the last few years.

Listened to the first story yesterday, my first Fifth Doctor audio since the move to box sets. I'm usually not that fond of this incarnation - I love the Marc arc to bits though - but this was a really strong murder mystery. Can't wait to listen to the second story tonight.
I skipped Doctors 5 through 7 since the beginning of the box sets era but I have found myself really enjoying The Quin Dilemma and The Dream Team. I think I'll buy the other 2024 Sixie and Fivey box sets. The Great Beyond being a six parter and having a gorgeous cover really piques my interest.
Great stuff so far.

Really enjoyed Dream Team. I'm surprised given this was written by Lizzie Hopley, whose scripts often bore me. I believe someone already mentioned it here, but it would have fitted perfectly in a Classic Doctors New Monsters box set. I was not a fan of the season 19 team on telly but I adore their dynamic thanks to Big Finish. They really seem like a family.
Great box set overall, can't wait to listen to the next one in September.

In the first story, it was nice that they took Adric far enough to show he and that lad both had feelings for each other, something the show wouldn't have. Tegan was very fun in getting into the detective sidekick role. It was all so fun and playful it didn't feel like a pure historical which often tend to be more sombre.
The dream crabs can only have so much done with them given the "We're STILL in a dream" twist would wear thin fast but this was a nice use of them. 2 eps a solid length too.
I like that Big Finish write this team as much warmer than on TV but without feeling like an alternate version like "ol' Sixie" is clearly very different to the TV 6th Doctor. This feels like a tinker not a reinvention. Davison's aged voice helps with it.

Listened to The Merfolk Murders this week and quite simply - it was incredible. A really great, gripping story that kept me guessing throughout. I'm excited for the other stories that Tim Foley hinted were related to it.
