This is basically a game thread where you pretend Doctor Who continued into the 1990s and there was never a big gap between 1989 and 2005. Basically, just have fun - invent Doctors and companions that never existed and whatever else could have been possible in a parallel universe where the show was never off-TV for a long period of time.

Weird to think the show was nearly cancelled in 1989. Thank God it continued otherwise it wouldn't be here today! I was born in the year Sylvester McCoy regenerated into Barbara Windsor and became the longest-running Doctor.

Following the turbulent twilight years of John Nathan-Turner's era on the programme, Doctor Who was officially taken off the air in 1989. However, in a peculiar turn of events, production at the BBC did not. Persuaded by fans that the longtime programme was capable of garnering them additional revenue through a joint enterprise, the show continued through a series of direct-to-video serials sponsored by the Doctor Who Appreciation Society under the production company name, Cosmic Fugue. Four productions would be released each year with additional merchandise manufactured by the BBC to sustain the show's meagre budget and contribute to other company ventures. JNT bowed out of returning to the producer's chair, feeling that he should instead focus on other projects thereby allowing Jason Flint and Brian Ferguson to assume the roles of script editor and producer, respectively. Both were interested in making their own mark upon the show and felt that a return to the show's origins with fresh stories by experienced writers would help to cement this tenuous new era as an official continuation with pre-existing audiences.
Impressed by his performance as Charlie in the titular television miniseries, David Warner was invited to take over the role from Sylvester McCoy in a story penned by John Lucarotti who had been selected based on the strength of his Marco Polo, The Aztecs and The Massacre adaptations for Target Books. In a violent and gruesome event that sees a bloodied stranger wander from the desert into twenty-third century Samarkand, the Eighth Doctor meets his first companion in the form of a British art thief named David Kinroy (played by actor Pierce Brosnan) who finds him while searching for the supposed lost sword Excalibur stolen from his stately home private collection. Together they uncover a terrible secret being revived by trapped scientists attempting to be rescued from a top secret subterranean installation. Cut off from the outside world for six months at a time, the community prepares for its mid-year supply party to leave, completely unaware of the lethal radiation cloud that has descended over their secluded highway entrance due to a freak accident caused by a dissenting faction of rebels (lead by the pacifist Shukurov who is unable to control his more overzealous followers) attempting to fight for recognition in the eyes of the World Government who have dispatched their secret servicemen to deal with the situation.
This first story The Unnatural is directed by Graeme Harper and introduces the unearthly Kipchak, a cancerous pseudo-insectoid species who have turned their own worlds into laboratories of pain and torment who were ensnared and trapped beneath the soil by a series of totemic alien devices keeping their protodimension sealed away and forgotten. Through their ritualistic followers in Samarkand, they manipulate Kinroy's younger brother, a computer hacker, into subconsciously coordinating with several scientists that have been twisted in the same way into breaking the seal on their wards and allowing them to come through from the other world. The Doctor is eventually able to seal the breach using his TARDIS as a lure to seal the Kipchak deep within its Lovecraftian interior, but at the cost of many lives including Kinroy's brother.

The direct to video serials continued until 2000, when it was decided to bring the show back to TV in the form of a mini-series. However problems with the Royal Charter meant the BBC had to start with a newly regenerated Doctor so that new viewers weren't required to buy merchandise in order to understand what had already occurred in the series.
James Nesbit took over from David Warner and the series was written by JK Rowling after the success of her first three Harry Potter books (the fourth was yet to come out before JK Rowling had been hired as head writer). JK Rowling's series gained mixed responses, with some claiming it 'too similar to Harry Potter' even though it had little in the way of similarities.

in 2001 a spinoff movie happened with dame Edna taking on the role of the doctor, Dr who and the killer cybermats was released to great acclaim.
it featured a very young Kiera knightly as the adopted grand-daughter of the doctor and followed their adventures into the terrifying world of the internet!
but a disagreement with the BBC over dubious content meant that it was pulled from release after just 2 days and has never resurfaced.

Fortunately in 2003 footage appeared in time for Doctor Who's 40th anniversary and became a major part of the celebrations. At the same time, new showrunner Joss Whedon was planning a massive multi-Doctor celebration called 'The Doctors Assemble'.
Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and David Warner all joined current Doctor James Nesbit whilst William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were represented through archive footage. Unfortunately some idiot got the 3rd Doctor mixed up with Worzel Gummidge and so the line about every Doctor being present never really made any sense.

Idris Elba's Doctor was criticised by many for being too dark and gritty, but the viewing figures climbed sharply and the show hit the prime time in the US for the first time.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

In 1990 season 27 tried a bold new experiment in reaction to the constantly decreasing budget. There were only 12 episodes, detailing the Doctor's attempts to enrol and mentor Ace in the Academy on Gallifrey. Ace quickly made friends with two other students who were similarly estranged as outsiders, while the Doctor took up a position in the Academy's library, acting as a mentor to Ace and her friends. The main foe for this season was the Master, whose body was reaching the end of its natural life, and there were frequent attempts by him, using his minions to destroy Gallifrey from his underground lair. Ace also makes friends with the mysterious Angel, a character introduced in an episode by newcomer Stephen Moffat, fresh from his success on his series, Press Gang. At the end of the series, the Master is vanquished but a terrible cost: Ace is mortally wounded, but the Watcher intervenes and she successfully regenerates...

Idris Elba decided to leave in 2010 and regenerated into Richard Ayoade. Ayoade's Doctor was popular but failed to reach the heights of Idris Elba's popularity, who was considered by many new series fans to be the best Doctor. Nevertheless, the show quickly became a worldwide phenomenon largely thanks to his portrayal.
