Listened to The First 15 minutes of Part One on The Big Finish Podcast
Opening was pretty exposition heavy but natural given its a range about Gallifrey's Infamous Foes and recounting Morbius's history like reading a wikipedia article
Theme song was okay very Deadly Assasian/Five Doctors esque in composition but nothing that would stick with me afterwards
Afterwards i struggled to continue, there was a tentacle face guy who obviously will be a bad guy, Mina Anwar is there are the protagonist (i like Mina Anwar since her Thin Blue Line days so iam glad she is doing audios with Big Finish) , there is a grumpy old time lady/sister of karn
i mean who knows it might be a good release (though the cover is quite unappealing with the dodgy photoshopping) but yeah nothing from the 15 minute excerpt makes me want to buy the release or continue the story.

Do we know if this is supposed to be Morbius before he was reduced to a brain, or after he fell over the cliff on Karn, or after he fought the eighth Doctor?

It's only just occurred to me how appropriate it is that Morbius will arrive in parts and will take months to be assembled into the whole creation...
(We may not be Time Lords, but we know your future Morbius! )

I really enjoyed Part 1. It’s obviously not a complete story by any means but the atmosphere and the performances really made this sing. I like that these early days Time Lords (well strictly speaking their outcasts conscripted to be soldiers) seem much more superstitious than the more all-knowing ones we’re used to. Get the sense this story is really about why Morbius was able to get a following in the first place, and why he might be able to get one again…

The opening reminded me of the epic, cinematic majesty of the first few moments of The Deadly Assassin. Janet Henfrey has a great voice - strong but with the cracks of ages. And we're in! Her narration tells us all we need to know about the fortunes of Morbius. Samuel West has another terrific voice, as do many other performers here - classy actors who mutter phrases like 'Rassilon's teeth' and mean it. Howard Carter's doomy score, and a certain heavy-skied norse flavouring, adds an interesting new dimension to what we know - which isn't much, come to think - about Gallifrey's history. It all provides a very appetising backdrop in which events, and Morbius's machinations, make themselves known.
I remember enjoying BF's Peladon box set, but in all honestly, I was hoping it would be more like this. Ancient legends/superstitions coming to fruition, whispered names across a shrill breeze, and dark mysterious characters like The Shimmering Man, and of course, something rather nasty in the belly of The Proteus. They all have their own stories to tell. Into this morass of curiosity are beautifully weaved some very sci-fi concepts.
I loved every moment of this. It has echoes of the kind of tales Marc Platt sometimes tells - deeply curious events wrapped up in persuasively chilling tones. Slightly larger than life characters who are 100% easy to invest in, and a story in no hurry to unravel its secrets, but that keeps you guessing nonetheless.
I only bought this opening episode having been stung by Once and Future, but I wish I'd bought the whole bundle now, every one. It's an ambitious project for BF, but on the strength of this, with its all-encompassing cinematic sound design and performances, I really think this journey might well be something quite special.

I'd say Dark Gallifrey is off to a strong start despite Morbius Part 1 having very little Morbius (unless that's who the shimmering man turns out to be). The crew of the Proteus are compelling and the Captain's backstory makes her a standout character. Given the time period the story's set in, I thought the worldbuilding was stellar. I love they way this story expands on Gallifrey lore. In many ways this story's structure reminds me of many War Master installments (in the best possible way). The titular Time Lord's machinations are going on in the background, while new character(s) who act as the story's protagonist(s) are the focus of much of the action. I hope the next two episodes keep up this momentum.
I have mixed feelings on the Lord of the Rings style info-dump at the start. It was necessary context but it was not a skillfully integrated as the aforementioned opening narration.
I wonder if the Horn of Rassilon, mentioned in this one, will be used to summon a Time Lord. Though probably not the one they crew of the Proteus is expecting. I mean the Doctor, the Fourth Doctor. It felt a bit like a Chekov's gun and I'll be disappointed if the mention does not pay off in some way in the next two episodes (even if my prediction about how it could pay off is totally wrong).

I fell in love with this one instantly. A tone unlike any other Big Finish to date, and very clearly the start of something special.
I’m going to try to ration chapters on a more-or-less weekly basis and make it last. Can I resist the temptation to push on?
Narrator: He couldn’t.

I loved this. It makes me worry though that this will be a fresh bunch of stories then War Master and Missy and the likes will feel like they are not very connected. If this was Dark Gallifrey in a past before The Doctor, Master, Romana, Rani? Would be a unique range. If the Morbius ones stay this good and then Master ones feel like normal boxsets it will be a letdown for sure.

Does this mean BF is ignoring "Timeless Child" for this series? Because The Doctor or whatever they went by should be somewhere, even if not twiddling their thumbs on Gallifrey.
After all, per Chibnall, The Doctor is just another iteration of an eternal being from some other reality.

Hopefully ignoring it for this series, and still more hopefully, ignoring it for all eternity...

No. Even if the Doctor is somewhere it doesn't follow that they would make an appearance in this story. Plus we are getting Fugitive Doctor release in January.
