So, in the The Legend of Ruby Sunday Thread, I off-handed pitched the idea of Susan getting a short story covering her regeneration, but the more I sit on that idea, the more I find myself thinking about.
Carol Ann Ford has done some fantastic work with Big Finish over the years, often paired with the 8th Doctor, and I'm certainly in no hurry to see her go... but I am curious. If and when Susan "dies" -- and regenerates into the Time Lord we must inevitably name Susan Two (or Susan, Too) -- how would you picture that scene playing out? In any medium. Or, from another angle, if you were in the driver's seat, what kind of regeneration would you want to shoot / record / write for Susan?
Personally, I'd kind of like to see a "natural" regeneration for a change. Maybe even something like a Time Lord ceremony for it -- something that they would've planned for and done deliberately. Something kind of like an inversion of the 10th Doctor's "farewell tour" -- where all of Susan's friends and family come to see her.
In my minds eye I can see a Susan talking about her grandfather, and express disappointment/sorrow that he never did come back to her -- that version of him to this version of her -- and if this were a television story, I'd have her pass into regeneration just as she sees, out of the corner of her eyes, the 1st Doctor standing among the gathered crowd, watching over her from a distance, but not saying anything. Something like that might be trickier to pull off in audio, though.
I'm curious what you all think. How would you imagine Susan's regeneration scene play out?

but preferably you would want Ford on screen one last time and I would like for it to be a big hero moment that saves the time lords form genocide
Even if it's just a straggling bunch of survivors starting again somewhere else.
Destroying Gallifrey a second time so soon after just getting it back only to rehash the same plot points from 10 years ago is such a waste and perhaps the thing I hate the most about the Chibnall era; and if it must exist at least do something new and interesting with it.

Ooh, I see you're thinking in a completely different direction than me, embracing continuity rather than trying to go outside it, if that makes sense. I definitely agree -- very strongly -- with your last point there. And I think RTD already did something similar by mining some emotion and pathos from the otherwise quite-inconsequential Timeless Child thing by making the Doctor identify more as an orphan. And just continuing to roll that spitball along a bit further (come to think of it, what actually is a spitball? It sounds kinda gross and I'm afraid to Google it...) -- I do kind of love the idea of their being Time Lord refugees out in the universe. Maybe a bunch of small enclaves with varying guiding principles that sometimes come into conflict with each other, and a lot more rogue Time Lords just wandering through time and space, totally beholden to their own eccentricities and whims. It would certainly open up a truly enormous number of potential stories. |

The expression comes from the pastime of shooting spitballs out of a straw, preferable at a wall or some sort of board to see if they stick. More often kids tend shoot them at each other in class when bored, though.

I can't imagine much worse than seeing boring Gallifrey again. So glad it was destroyed!. As for Susan, I would like something triumphant if she has to return. I'm sure she will given how much she has been mentioned, even sadly the death of William Russell may have made RTD realise that maybe its time to bring Susan back. But the modern era really has relied so much on fan service & referencing the shows own history much more than the classic era. Maybe enough now if this is supposed to be a new era for new fans.

I think we're veering (quite far) off-topic here, but....The Doctor moaning on and on about how he's the last of his kind for the 50th million time is what's boring. Agreed. It was fine the first time but I really don’t get why RTD is so insistent on rehashing that again. I mean, that wasn't RTD's decision, that was Chinbnall's decision -- RTD is just working with what he's got. Sure, he could've just ignored everything Chinball did and just moved on, but that would've been disrespectful not just to Chibnall himself (who is a peer and potential future coworker to him) but also the fans of that era. It also feels weird to characterize the handful of brief mentions we've got as being "insistent" or to frame the Doctor talking about Gallifrey's loss as "moaning on and on." I can't think of a single scene from any of NuWho that really comes close to fitting those descriptors. |

If Susan ever does get to regenerate, I think I'd like to see her's mirror the First Doctor's. Maybe Susan doesn't want to regenerate but a visit from her grandfather gives her the courage to go on. Or maybe she doesn't have the ability to regenerate and by the story's end she's given the ability just in time similar to the Eleventh Doctor's regeneration. I absolutely agree that she should have a small scene with the First Doctor before the end, also similar to how Amy appears to the Eleventh Doctor in Time of the Doctor - maybe that's just how she sees the current Doctor just before the end.

And yes, I'd call RTD insistent on doing it because he could've just left that part and moved on but he had to make it definite that the Doctor is the final Time Lord around again and whilst they've been brief mentions, given how short the season is, it feels like it's been brought up a fair few times. And, no, it wouldn't have been disrespectful to Chibnall to move past it since RTD is already making the Timeless Child a big part of Fifteen's character - not to mention Thirteen seemed to be over it by the time Flux came around - so it's not like he's completely ignoring what Chibnall did (which is arguably what Chibnall did to Moffat which is a whole other can of worms...) |
