One of Big Finish’s very best for my money.
Rich in detail, a pure historical that’s both detailed and moving. And a rare six parter that doesn’t outstay its welcome, especially given each episode generously runs above the 25 minute mark.
I adore the format, which expertly balances the dramatic reading and the audio play formats. William Russell & Carole Ann Ford both read beautifully.
A production that excels from every single aspect, bringing a classic to Big Finish whilst recreating a lost story that I’m confident would’ve been a classic to the overall Whoniverse.

A wonderful slice of “what might have been” had this one been produced in the first year of the show. May not be historically accurate…but it’s big storytelling told brilliantly, so who gives a fig?
And crucially it’s big storytelling told by just three people.
Great performances from both William Russell and Carole Ann Ford that had me blowing the dust of the Companion Chronicles and Lost Stories downloads for the First Doctor’s era once I’d finished listening last night, purely with the sheer nostalgia of it all (God…I really miss the Companion Chronicles range…).
Oh, and both actors equally matched in performance by some young fella whose name escapes me as Alexander…😜 (just kidding…)
Without a doubt one of the best Lost Stories Big Finish has recorded. Hat tip to everyone who voted for this.

“It was a good dream, but a futile one.”
An epic historical of a doomed great man with the Season 1 crew at their best. Dorney’s Alexander is one of the best performances Big Finish has to offer and Russell and Ford perform perfectly as narrators and performers. Russell’s take on the First Doctor is honestly one of my favourites as it captures his charm wonderfully.

Dorney’s Alexnder is amazing, and performed like Alexander would have been in thr 60s when being gay was still criminalised after all, so no possible allusion could be made but with still enough of a “if you know, you ‘now” going on for the more informed listener to go “ahh…” over. He’s at turns brilliant and petulant. Caring anf callous. And the ending where Alexander isn’t dead is also very much in the vein of a 60s story, where death had to be carefully handled - sci-fi deaths are fine, off screen deaths are fine but a ‘hero’ character dying (potentially at his own hand)? No way.
