Oceans 8 (Ok but not great) Regards mark687 One my of my favorite bits I've ever heard is to just watch a movie length compilation of the press tour because the press tour was so good that you don't even need to see the movie.

Reservoir Dogs Still a classic. Perfectly cast, i just cant picture James Woods in this at all
Highlander: Endgame for all its faults, i still really enjoy this. Kell is a fantastic villain. It introduced Donnie Yen to Hollywood and its better than 2, 3 and 5

AvatarI know this movie gets compared to a number that came before it, but I haven't seen those. As such, I think this one is quite good. Maybe it's the nostalgia factor (it was one of the first M rated movies I ever saw, so it kind of stood out to me as one of my first "grown up" movies at 12 or 13), but I've always thought it was a very interesting and enjoyable story. True, with a more critical eye now the first half is kind of slow, but I think the sheer beauty of some of the landscapes and effects more than make up for that. What still gets me is how good the CGI in this looks. Sure, Avengers: Endgame looks impressive, but it doesn't remotely reach the levels of authenticity this movie strove for. I'd say more than half the animals in this look more convincing than Thanos. There were some things that were perhaps a bit too ambitious for a movie from 2009, but it still looks incredible. Imagine what Avatar 2 might look like considering the advancements in technology since the first one! If nothing else, it's a fantastic visual piece with a repetitious theme. Even if it is inferior in the story department to some of its predecessors, it presents itself well enough to be held in the same league as them as far as I'm concerned (NB: This opinion may be subject to change if I ever get around to watching some of the those predecessors)

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

It's a beautiful looking film - the words "sumptuous" and "immersive" often spring to mind - and the performances by most of the cast are damned good but... ... Look, I'm a huge James Cameron fan... and I love the nods he gives to other SF in his films but this just felt really derivative to me: it's not often I watch a film and think about what other stories it reminds me of. It was also a white saviour story in an era that was not very welcoming of white saviour films. And I'm saying that as a fan of his directorial style. Honestly, I could talk for hours about how brilliant a film Aliens is - from it's mirroring of the first movie to the fact that it's an action film in which there is no action for the first hour - and I love the two Terminator movies that he directed, and The Abyss is one of my favourite movies of all time... but honestly, I think Cameron's story-telling chops took a real hit when he broke up with Gale Ann Hurd. Also, something I read a couple of years ago was really telling: Avatar was huge at the time of its release. It was all over livejournal (I can't believe I just typed that in 2019!) and there were stories of people who "identified" as N'avi but less than a decade later it's almost vanished culturally without a trace. Where are the conventions, the tribute websites, the cosplayers, the fanzines? It's a really sobering reminder of how fleeting success can be.

Lock Stock/Snatch
(Before Guy Richie went flash over substance, plus there's just something about the fact Mike Reid, Dennis Faria and Benicio Bel Torro are involved in the same storyline in Snatch that really works.)

Avengers: Endgame round 2. I found that the thing played better second time around. Thor's storyline especially flowed more easily and I continue to pray that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 picks up where Endgame left off as far as who is on the ship at the end of the film. That is a movie I really, really want to see.

The Thief of Bagdad (as some spelled it then) (Alexander Korda Films, 1940)
The classic of all the 'Arabian Nights' fantasy movies ever made. A film stuffed with then ground-breaking effects which mostly still work (and I'm a classic Who fan, I like CSO effects and this is the original!) The Prince and especially the Princess are more than a bit wet by modern standards imo and the songs are (I think) mercifully few...
But the sets and designs and scale are magnificent and the colour is glorious, Conrad Veidt's Jaffar is a terrific villain and Sabu does a great job as 'the little thief' who proves to be the real hero of the piece. And for me (just as with the Disney cartoon version decades later) this film is stolen by the Genie! Rex Ingram is unforgettable, with a huge performance and a laugh that would make the Black Guardian envious! BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!

The Thief of Bagdad (as some spelled it then) I'm pretty sure that's not incorrect, just a matter of how you transliterate from Arabic script to our alphabet. Then again, I don't read or speak Arabic, so I could be 100% wrong

I'm guessing including the 'h' now is a better guide to correct pronunciation - but that's just a guess and I could be 100% wrong too
EDIT: I've remembered that Agatha Christie spells it 'Baghdad', writing at around the same time as the film, and she and her husband (professor of archaeology) worked in Iraq over several years. So both versions were in use.
