Flipside to maintaining loyalty to BF is episode 7 of the just finished Fourth Doctor Adventures is currently $8.55 at The Book Depository with free shipping. At the moment, purchasing the pre-order subscription download from Big Finish and then buying its matching CDs from the Book Depository is the most likely money saving scenario (a ridiculous solution) for my needs. I don't think anyone could question my loyalty...

Edit A Life of Crime, the current Main Range title available, is $11.37 with free shipping. Another edit Doing the same BF download and Book Depository combination only saves about 8 bucks from buying straight from BF, so not such a huge difference.

Edit A Life of Crime, the current Main Range title available, is $11.37 with free shipping. Another edit Doing the same BF download and Book Depository combination only saves about 8 bucks from buying straight from BF, so not such a huge difference. Let me try from my calculations... A 12 CD Main Range pre-order subscription costs £130 ($223.07 CAD) + £60 ($102.95 CAD) shipping. An average of $27.17 CAD per CD. A 12 digital title Main Range pre-order subscription costs $109.00 CAD. An average of $9.08 CAD per digital title. The latest Main Range CD titles on average from the Book Depository cost $14.75 CAD. Note: I have tons of 10% off e-mail coupons from the Book Depository in my possession, which I haven't factored into this example breakdown. A $14.75 CAD CD from the Book Depository + a $9.08 CAD BF download = $23.83 CAD per title. That would be a total of $40.08 CAD savings (even without applying the coupons) to have immediate download access and to also have the CDs delivered one by one to my door. It's a nonsensical reality that an international Big Finish customer could save money by buying the same item twice separately in different formats.

Has anyone emailed the podcast these questions or redshark Jason's solution? Better chance of a response if these concerns were tweeted directly to Nick and Jason. I serious doubt the more vocal complaints would make the podcast or Vortex.

One of the things Big Finish has made a concerted effort to do in the last year is promote direct ordering from their website. The exclusive early releases and pre order discounts, plus the download being included for physical purchases made it pretty appealing. I'd hate to see that dry up.
I agree that we should make it known that there are some reasonable ideas going on this board and elsewhere that would help maintain enthusiasm for purchasing directly from Big Finish. It's certainly emotional for some, but the more reasonable the suggestions sound, the more likely they are to be considered.

You know what's really silly? I just put The Torchwood Archive in my basket. The "shipping fee" for this $18.66 release is $2.00. The "per order" fee is more than 4 times that much: $8.67. They should just be honest and call the whole thing a shipping fee.

I hope to receive some kind of official response on the Big Finish Facebook post I shared with everyone in this thread. I've got some time before I have to make a decision on my Main Range & Fourth Doctor subs, so I hold out hope that Big Finish will offer up some alternative options. If things remain the way they are then some combination of what RedsharkJason and other have discussed is likely the road I will take for monthly releases while making multiple purchases of box sets keeping me buying direct from BF. Still that we are at that point continues to strike me as absurd and a case of BF taking money out of their pocket that I would gladly give only to them and sharing it with middlemen. Just nuts.

It just smacks of 'double-dipping' on the shipping fees front, whether that's the truth or not.

I got a reply back from Ian and it was basically this is the situation they have as far as international shipping is concerned, it isn't as bad as it could be for us and to lessen the per item charge we should plan better and group as many purchases together as possible. The part about the postage costs not being as bad as they could be for "us" from Nathan's post has unintentionally made me SOUR for days! It pains me to think that in Big Finish's world that they believe the international CD buyers are receiving a good or mitigated deal??? I really struggle to come up with any Doctor Who or audio drama UK shops that charge more for shipping than Big Finish does. I LOVE Big Finish's products, but I currently feel that the Big Finish management is being very callous towards its international CD buyers. Pre-order 9-12 title subscriptions with the £5.00 shipping fee attached to every CD sent just BURNS me. I strongly believe that Big Finish could offer better international postage rates, while still making plenty of profit at the end of their day. Another UK shop example that comes to my mind about bundling your purchases and saving on postage is when I buy $50.00 CAD worth of Warhammer audios from Black Library the shipping is free! All orders also over £20 GBP, $50 USD, $60 AUD or €30 EUR qualify for free standard Royal Mail shipping at Black Library.

What really blows my mind is that if I were to pre-order a 12 CD main range subscription, the additional price for shipping raises the price of the order to the equivalent of almost half the price of the 12 CDs. So $173.36 for the CDs, $80.01 for shipping. Guess it's a good thing I'm mostly a download customer. And I'll be less likely to buy any physical CDs in the future, with shipping prices like that. (For example, I'd have been less likely to buy the Tenth Doctor Limited Edition set if those shipping prices had been in effect last year.) The shipping prices were high in the first place, which is why I tend to buy downloads, but the increase is really too much. It's all very well to talk about grouping purchases, but it doesn't work very well for pre-orders.

Funny thing, I hadn't read this forum yet when I went to buy a subscription to the upcoming Torchwood 6-CD series. US$60 for the stories plus US$40 for shipping. I wrote Ian to confirm that the site wan't making a math error, he explained the situation.
My response, which as it turns out mirrored everyone else's, was to ask if BF would consider an option to pre-purchase Bundles. Big Finish wins by getting cash up front to help with their production costs, and they won't have to wait for a series to get all of it's released pressed onto CDs to have to guess at how many copies to produce for shipment. Customers win by locking-in a discounted Subscription/Bundle price, they get access to the downloads as they are incrementally released, and they save on shipping when the Bundle is shipped after the production run. Both sides win, while mitigating the potential lost sales caused by the unfortunate shipping hike.
I guess a lot of us are independently thinking the same thing.

Oddly enough, I have several ongoing monthly subscriptions - Early Adventures S3&4, a main range "bridge" to get me to November, and then the 42-month MEGA main range subscription. BF is going to be shipping individual CDs to me for years. And if the shipping hike to us is a passthru of their increased costs, then they're going to be taking it in the shorts as they fulfill the CDs on orders I've already paid for. I would be more than willing to have them group my CDs and just send me a package every 2-3 months. I would still have access to the downloads and subscriber extras, and can certainly wait a little bit to have the physical product in my hands. And yes, I know... media is dead. But I *like* having a physical CD with physical artwork that I can hold in my physical hand. I guess I'm antiquated, but I really do prefer to pay extra to get CDs than just the downloads. I may not be in the majority, but I know I'm not alone.

Perhaps if there are enough nicely worded emails with concerns and suggestions Big Finish will consider other options.

I do wish I had put the cash together and gone with the super sub but at the two times BF offered it the expense didn't make a lot of sense to me. Anyway, I await a official BF response to my Facebook post on their page this morning.
