Hello again I'm Janet.
Yes! My favourite sitcom is back and as weird, funny and clever as before. Seeing Eleanor, Chidi, Tehani, Jason, Janet and Michael back for a final hurrah is wonderful.
The Good Place will see me through now until Christmas unless they do what they did last time and split the season and conclude it in January. Really enjoyed the first episode if the rest is as good, we'll be in for a treat.

Columbo: "Requiem for a Falling Star" - An aging Hollywood star mistakenly (?) murders her assistant instead of the more obvious target of the sleazy gossip reporter. Lots of fun is made at Columbo's expense. About par for Columbo, which is to say high quality.
MASH: "The Ringbanger" - I did not remember Leslie Nielsen being on this show. But here is he, so how 'bout that. Drunk Col. Blake is hilarious.

Been watching the Blu ray restoration of 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' this week - four episodes in and it just draws you in deeper than the old DVD release. So much detail is brought out in the performances and plot. Despite having seen it many times before, it is like a fresh watch and is so involving. It is understandable that, in the days before VHS home recording, each episode was repeated the same week, such was the amount of information so subtlety provided without widely available subtitles. Sublime drama.
Tonight, i have just watched episode 1 of 'The Monocled Mutineer'. Having seen it in passing first time around and despite getting the DVD about a year ago, I have just got around to watching it. Very impressive and again a quality of Drama we rarely see these days. It is understandable upon watching, what an impression a young Paul McGann made at the time. British Film as it was, made a good attempt to make a star of him with the likes of 'Withnail & I' and 'Paper Mask', but he really should have been taken as a lead by Hollywood and not merely consigned to the likes of 'Hornblower' and the Doctor Who TVM and recently 'Holby City'. He should have been more than the 'George Lazenby of Doctor Who', as he summarised it.

Hello again, I'm Janet.
Earlier in the year my middle daughter made me sit through the entire seven series of Skins. I was surprised by how thrilling, funny and sad it was. Great soundtrack too.
So,to return the favour, I have asked her to watch my favourite recent sitcom, The Good Place. Imagine my glee when she pops her head round the door, "I've just watched the first series! That twist! I didn't expect that. Just going to start series 2."
Job done! As for me, watching series 4 is proving tricky. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters. But, at the same time it is the right decision to stop before the quality starts to drop.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

After my purchase of all three seasons of original Trek last week, my wife and I have been ploughing through them (she’s very supportive). We’re just a handful of episodes away from the end of Season 1 and...
... gee, it took nearly 10 episodes before it really found its feet, didn’t it? It’s good television, though: the scripts are (mostly) great, once they hit their stride (early scripts are interesting sf, but not necessarily good Trek); they’ve realised quite early on that there’s chemistry between Spock and McCoy so they’ve played that up really nicely; Kirk is nicely underplayed in a lot of scenes by Shatner (as of Space Seed (and talk about leaving a hook for a movie follow-up in the last scene...)) so I’m not looking forward to the excesses of later seasons; the supporting characters are nicely delineated and some get repeat performances for added continuity bonuses. I’ve not been impressed with the casual sexism but it’s nicely offset by the amazing diversity (of the time: it’s incredible when I compare it to other shows of a similar vintage) of the supporting players: in Court Martial for instance, Kirk’s prosecutor is a woman but the panel presiding over him consists of four men, two of whom are POC.
I’ve read quite a bit on the history of Trek so the battles that Roddenberry underwent to achieve his vision (it’s interesting how sometimes the most flawed people can have the most idealistic vision of “what could be”) would make an interesting story on their own. But what is on the screen is great fun.

The "shift3 2019" lecturing wasn't as bad as the trailer made it out to be. I enjoyed it and look forward to the rest of the season .

MASH: Season 1, Episodes 17-18 - More of a comedy/drama mix here, and just the right blend, too. Li'l Ron Howard makes an appearance as an underage Marine.

Star Trek TOS
A Taste Of Armageddon
This Side Of Paradise
Devil In The Dark
Probably peak Trek here: some interesting dilemmas for the crew solved in different ways. Armageddon is probably the silliest of them but then I remember how often we in Australia get uptight about our citizens going to other countries and breaking their laws and it becomes a little less ridiculous. Paradise is only let down by the ease with which Kirk rejects the spores simply by looking at his medals and being reminded of just how important his job is to him. Devil In The Dark has one of the few genuine SFnal setups so far (as opposed to IT’S A MORAL DILEMMA... IN SPACE) and remains a classic
