Episode two, The Good Doctor. I thought it was rather wonderful. Some really sharp writing, some really good performances and oh look, The Master has a companion. Two hours in and this is a very strong set.

ISOs, sorry. As in ISOlation... Hi Scott, it is great having you here providing commentary & insights. I for one would love to get a chance to hear your Beavers Masters box set one day or perhaps a anthology box set featuring all the BF Masters ala Classic Doctors/New Monsters. Anyway, thanks for spending time with us.

Aghhhh...blows my mind that that brilliant title theme can be on 5 separate discs/in 5 separate folders, ten times in total, and not once is it in there as an isolated file!

I've been asking around of twitter for an extended version of the theme. Scott was kind enough to loop in the composer to the thread, so, here's hoping! I really do want mixes of that theme fit to each era of the show so that I can edit them in to Master stories haha

Anyway, thanks for spending time with us. I'd love for this to be the start of a series of Master boxsets, each featuring a different incarnation, i.e. "The War Master" being followed by "The Crispy/Beevers Master", "The First Master" etc.

That was tremendously engaging and impressive - I started into the set wondering if I would ever take Jacobi seriously as the Master (something I probably failed to do for lack of screen time for the character, a big problem I also had with Beevers' Master in the beginning) and ended up completely sold on his portrayal within the first hour. Bravo!!
I also started into the set unsure if I was really all that keen on the idea of the bad guy having top bill (I tend to think of the resistance as the actual stars of Dalek Empire, which is different), but I think Big Finish made sure it was a good idea. I'm definitely looking forward to any future box sets with Jacobi's or other Masters after a set like that.

That was fantastic. There have been some great releases this year from Big Finish but this is my favourite. But it seemes like there was a big gap between the first & second story. He mentions going to gallifrey but then in the next story this is not mentioned at all?
By the end it appears this is the only boxset we will be getting with this character?

IT is mentioned offhandedly in The Good Master that the Time Lords apparently sent him there to investigate, but he's loath to actually admit that he's following orders. And Scott has confirmed elsewhere that his appearance in the upcoming Gallifrey set is between Viscoid and Good Master, yes. Cyber Reality is apparently standalone though, but we'll have to wait and see if there are any timeline hints there.

I was very surprised that my favorite story in this one is the one that the Master is barely in. I didn't love The Heavenly Paradigm, but it wasn't bad, and the box set was very good overall.

The fate of the race Cole tried to save reminds me tragically of the Cybermen. Peaceful people turning to metal suits to overcome hostile conditions and loss of personality as a result, with some of the hatred the Daleks are known for used as motivation. Has the be the definitive example of the road to hell being paved with good intentions. Cole's personal investment in the race that became the Iso's and his role in the ultimate conclusion make it all the worse.

I really love the covers for The Good Master and The Star Man. The former really evokes that gritty sci-fi feel you get in films like Alien and Aliens.
Were the echoes in The Good Master supposed to lead up to anything? An effect of the Heavenly Paradigm?

Were the echoes in The Good Master supposed to lead up to anything? An effect of the Heavenly Paradigm? It was mentioned obliquely a few ties that The Master had been sort of timelooping himself, trying the same events over and over and over again until he got to a favorable outcome. Except Cole accidentally destroyed the Heart, which rendered the entire process moot. I just figured the echoes were, like, we, the listener, getting to experience slightly different versions of these events as they had previously happened. That's also why the Heart says the Master has changed, because he's had to get good at playing a good doctor in order to gain the trust of everyone needed to pull off the plan.
