Just listened to Beneath the Viscoid. Oh my... Jacobi seems to be pitched somewhere between Beevers and McQueen, menace with a hint of playfulness (and not over the top). One thing is for sure... He's all Master.
Cheers

I finished this a couple of days ago and thought it was very fine. I was unsure how they could portray our Master Villain as the lead, but they did well with it. He's definitely the Master, and DJ played it perfectly. I was surprised that they buttoned it off with the event that led him to submerge his identity and dovetail into the TV series... I was more expecting an open ending and that that pivotal moment would come in some future box set.

Well, wasn't that something? A very high quality package that nicely comes together in episode 4. With Derek Jacobi playing the Master, who *wouldn't* be charmed into unwittingly doing his bidding? Very strong scripts and acting all around. All that with a musical intro that could give you nightmares. Will be listening to this one a few times more. The only downside is that they didn't leave a lot of room for follow-ons, unless they squeeze more adventures in-between episodes 1 and 2. And, of course, all this only whets our appetite for the upcoming Gallifrey box set.

You know, now that you mention it, I actually do rather like Attack of the Cybermen ...

Wow! A truly fantastic box set, even by BF's very high standards. Favourite was episode 3 - as others have said the way things turn out is a real kick in the stomach.
Question: has the weapon the Daleks acquire in ep 4 been referenced elsewhere? The name sounded familiar but I can't place it .....

Finished the first two episodes and just realised - no reference to the drumming in his head. It should be there, so why no reference?

The name sounded familiar but I can't place it ..... {Spoiler} The Cruciform was referenced in The Sound of Drums when the Master explains why he ran away from the War. He said he saw the Dalek Emperor take control of it, which Big Finish have now depicted in The Heavenly Paradigm

The Sky Man-- Was I the only one that thought Cybermen? At least at first. I mean, they have a new origin, although we have had multiple origins for different styles of Cybermen, and a different directive, but I couldn't get it out of my mind. Another vote here for 'new Cybermen'! Though by the end, with the encasing protective suit and the hate-chanting, I did realise a Dalek parallel was intended. I still think it should have been Cybermen though! Given that we know very recently from the 12th Doctor that 'the Cybermen' have happened many times on many worlds, I thought it would have been so cool for this to be another example - Cybermen created for motives of love! But the theme of the boxset is 'Master v Daleks' of course, so it does make sense as written. (For what it's worth, I thought the cover artwork also implies 'Cybermen-like' creations. Excellent artwork across this whole set, linked by colour theme as well as style I think. My favourite is 'Beneath the Viscoid' cover but they're all excellent.)

I'd say the theme tune does the job of reminding you about the drum beat without it being something that needs to be explicitly referenced in story.

Beneath the Viscoid isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s a nice opening to the set and a very promising start from Derek Jacobi as The War Master.
The theme is great, isn’t it?

The Good Master really is, well, good! Plays to the Master’s strengths of being camp, cold and calculating. Great use of the Daleks and I liked the echoes too. Looking forward to the next story.
A very Merry Christmas to you all!

Loved that. Really loved that. Jacobi is perfect for the role.
Sounds rather like Beevers at times, but also vaguely like his character Stuart in Vicious.
The ending means that if we ever get more, I guess they'll have to be prequels.
Loved the theme as well, but I still think my all-around favorite the is either S2 or S3 of Dalek Empire. But not by too much.

Or at least, a new thing like Cybermen but not the same. I also thought of The Doctor Falls, but this must have been written well before that aired. The concept of Mondas repeating elsewhere independnetly occurred to different writers in different formats. Sooo........ .....according to the show, sentient life tends towards cyberdization; according to reality, the show tends towards stories about life tending towards cyberdization?

I listened to it last week while driving up north to visit my parents. Loved it and was left wanting more.

One very minor thing - and I do mean minor - Jonny Green's not one for shaking things up much vocally is he? He sounds exactly like Tyler from Torchwood: Aliens Among Us plopped into these stories. Maybe wouldn't stick out so much if he weren't playing a major BF character so close to this set. He's still fine but normally BF regulars will try an accent or intonation to differentiate if they're showing up in multiple Whoniverse stories so close together.
Again, not that it tained the set at all but it did stick out a bit on listen and it'd be rather boring if everything I posted about a release was praise.
