One thing that I found a bit odd was the notion of River making Kovarian lose her **** and start literally hallucinating, telepathic fields or not. You'd think that capability would be something the Doctor took advantage of a bit more often.... That wasn't my impression of what happened at all. I thought that she and Brooke had gone back in time to seed the concept of the Furies in Kovarian when she was young, then returned to the present.

You'd think that capability would be something the Doctor took advantage of a bit more often.... That wasn't my impression of what happened at all. I thought that she and Brooke had gone back in time to seed the concept of the Furies in Kovarian when she was young, then returned to the present. I suppose it's possible that I missed something like that but it doesn't make much sense to me, since Kovarian told River about the Furies since she was a little girl. That's why River more or less says "remember those stories you'd tell me about the Furies? I went looking for them. They're real", etc. So, if she was already told about them as a child, she wouldn't need to go back and plant the idea as an adult since Kovarian already knew it. What I was referring to happens starting around 1:20 on track 8. River's talking about how she and her sisters beat Kovarian (with Kovarian present) River: "<excerpted> Oh, one of the many gifts the TARDIS gave us is a phsycic link. A low level telepathic influence. You might call it a form of mind control."
One of the sisters: What did you do?
River: As some great women once said, I've got all my sisters with me. Anger, fear, guilt, everything Kovarian filled us with. Those were my weapons. Repressed, buried, quite the psychic rocket fuel. I just needed Kovarian to have a drop of doubt of guilt. Most churches will give you that. We turned it into a torrent of madness. She made us believe in the furies, but they were never real. We put them in her head dressed in cricket whites.
<conversation snipped>
River: "...the word is gaslight. You did it to me, to these girls, and however many came before them. But together we see through them, we see through you..."...yadda yadda....
So I took that all to mean not that River or anyone planted the idea of the furies in Kovarian's head, but rather, that this telepathic influence helped her drive Kovarian into believing that what she thought were just stories she'd told River were in fact real. (And while she's going on about all that, Brooke is off setting up Andrew to get killed in the Doctor's place).

Well, he does when - as with River here - there are a few more of his selves around (cf Three Doctors/ Five Doctors - their 'Contact' moments). It's always been hinted that Time Lords have some form of telepathy - see Susan, the Master, & anytime the Doctor hooks into psychic goings-on - notably Last of the Time Lords... But glad you enjoyed overall!

Just finished my re-listen. I think the Fifth Doctor worked really well together, and I enjoyed all the stories. Though I still don't think I've worked out all the time switches, even after a second listen. Specifically, I got a little lost regarding exactly how what happened happened (and it what order) in the end of The Furies. It was all a bit too timey-wimey for me.

To me, it seemed to have a pretty stark effect this time. Still loved it. Problem is, I end up over-analyzing episodes a lot of the time. I love Heaven Sent, but end up thinking thing's like "why is he punching the wall with a naked fist? Wouldn't it be faster to kick it a lot using those shoes he's wearing?"

I'll go back and read what other folk said, but I did have to say that I loved this box set. Just loads of fun and excitement.

Finally listened to the whole thing yesterday. Yes, this was excellent, though I do think the whole Furies was kinda introduced out of nowhere. Perhaps it would’ve been better to seed it in episode 3 first.
That’s just being picky though. An incredible box set all round.

My favorite River set so far. I loved the whole thing. This range just keeps picking up steam and Alex seems to have more and more fun with each one. River and Five work great together. I knew it would be interesting, considering that Five is the most emotionally stunted and asexual of the incarnations (can't even hug his companions without feeling uncomfortable) alongside River's over-the-top emotional swings, and I wasn't disappointed. Peter and Alex had great chemistry together. Much better than what she had with Matt Smith, I believe. (I do think the age difference of the actors played a part in that, even though it shouldn't given the characters)
I loved the use of Kovarian, and I just keep wanting to know why she hates and blames The Doctor for everything wrong in the Universe to the point where she ends up doing what she does. I didn't care as much on TV, since I never liked that whole Silence story-line and felt it was completely nonsensical and illogical. Leave it to BF to give awful characters some depth.

My take on this box set is up at Cultbox. One thing I neglected to put in the review is that most of these stories demand a second listen, to work out the temporal shennigans after you know where the story is going!

Leave it to BF to give awful characters some depth.Well, that's the problem right there and is why I was wary of Kovarian appearing in BF. The TV storyline - they have to kill the doctor so he doesn't say his name on Trenzalore (presumably into the crack), because then the Time Lords would return and the Time War would destroy everything - was nonsense. (Not only was it nonsense, but it was abandoned in a nonsensical fashion. Clara didn't tell them his name but told them it was him, Gallifrey did come back , annnnnd.....nothing happened; nevermind the paradox one might think would have resulted from him not actually dying on Trenzalore, since Clara had already been in his "tomb"). Anyway, point being, they're stuck with Kovarian thinking she's saving the universe by killing the Doctor if they use the character. Though given the conclusion to this story it sounded rather like maybe she gave up on the idea ("I'm trying to save the universe from....from... from me?").

I really have enjoyed her previous boxsets, but series 3 takes it to a whole new level.
The ideas and the imagination of the authors just astounds me!
I cannot wait to listen to these stories again. I get the feeling that familiarity will only enhance the experience.
The only criticism I have was with the last story because I found it difficult to distinguish the female voices, other than River and Kovarian of course. I am sure another listen will help with that small issue.
Also I was looking out for River to say to the regenerated Brooke - “I was just like you once!” (Perhaps I missed it?) again another reason for a re-listen.

Although ithe script would have probably been written without knowing who the actress would be playing the second Brooke. I seem to remember a line like that, but thought that River had addressed it to one of her other sisters!? But as I said before I did find the characters a little confusing.

She in fact said to Brooke in My Dinner With Andrew that she reminded her of him.

Another absolutely superb set, the River Song volumes just seem to go from strength to strength. And Big Finish have done a marvellous job so far of having River interact with various Doctors without it ever coming across as feeling forced, gimmicky, repetitive, or convenient, which when you think about it is quite a feat. River's interactions with each Doctor so far have all felt unique and interesting, and an idea I was originally a little dubious on - River meeting each of the past Doctors - is now something I actively anticipate and look forward to. For me Lady in the Lake and My Dinner with Andrew are both instant classics, real stand-outs in a very high quality set of stories.
I now sincerely hope River crosses paths with Tim Treloar, Fraser Hines and David Bradley's versions of the Doctor after she's done messing about with Tom.
Here's a question, though. How come River can remember the Silence, which she must do in order to be able to namecheck them at one point?

I can’t see them pairing River up with Tim or Frazer in her own series. If they’re going to do adventures with her, then I suspect she’d pop up in the Third Doctor Adventures or the Early Adventures. I’d be surprised if David’s First Doctor popped up in a River set rather than her in a First Doctor set, but I guess it does seem likelier.
Personally, after the Fourth Doctor, I hope they move onto other, non-Doctor aspects of River’s life. Her time with Nardole before The Husbands of River Song. Her time with Anita and the two Dave’s prior to Silence in the Library. I think the latter could be rather special really.

Just finished this set, and my, it's incredible!
Even if I'm not completely on board with the final solution...
{Spoiler} Really, couldn't have saved poor Andrew somehow?? If it's Andrew that got killed in the restaurant, then how come the whole part 4 was not erased? (Is this because of the restaurant being out of the rules of time maybe?)
...the road taken there was a lot of fun! "My dinner with Andrew" - the funniest BF story I've listened to so far for sure! And then followed by a really dark one.... just my thing, loved it!
And finally got some holes plucked in on the Kovarian - River past, which was very much needed!
{Spoiler} Kovarian going like that, and especially the "Tick tock" rhyme by the Doctor's "ghost" sent chills down my spine!
Discuss?

Ive heard good things about this one. I’ve been meaning to get around to it for a while. It's very worth it I think. ^^ Though I loved the previous volumes too, completely started shipping River and the Doctor <3 , but this one is definitely my favourite so far!
Only hope BF will do all of the incarnations who never got to meet her (especially my favourite Nine ^^).

Hi, frosty, and welcome to the forum! We already have a Diary of River Song Volume 3 thread in the Worlds of Doctor Who board. I'm going to add your posts to that thread.
