Love & Monsters: Just this question to Rose that summarizes well the absurdity of the whole episode. "Great, big, absorbing creature from outer space and you're having a go at me?"

The Web Planet
The idea of doing an episode without any humanoids apart from the Doctor was pretty cool. It was just poorly executed.

Hmm... I've got three? Time and the Rani, for all its missteps, still tries to do something really interesting with the Lakertyans, particularly in regards to Beyus and Faroon. There's a dignity to Mark Greenstreet and Wanda Ventham's performances that really tries to make you care about these characters and that's in no small part down to the actors. And of course, there's Kate O'Mara as an uncharacteristically power hungry Rani. It's an agonising shame that the character would get buried for so long under this and Dimensions in Time because she's a really great character. Speaking of which, The Mark of the Rani. I don't know why I don't like this story... It's a bit of a mystery, particularly given its good points. The Doctor is wonderfully characterised here, much closer to the end of his arc than the TV order would have you believe. Killingsworth is nicely realised with the historical village, its atmosphere feels unique amongst its peers. Lazy and provincial. The idea of the Rani's interference on Earth being a recurring trend outside of this incident involving Miasimia Goria is nicely intriguing. As is the whole idea of an exiled Time Lord simply walking in and taking over (presumably repairing her TARDIS in the process). Despite his more comically single-minded depiction here, the rapport between the Master and the Rani is rather good too. Almost like two of Robert Holmes's many schemers. It only really suffers significantly from lacking a final act. Seeing them try to sabotage the meeting between the intellectual genii of the Industrial Revolution or decamping to Miasimia Goria would have helped tie things up at the end. The Time Monster is all about those big ideas and a lot of those big ideas are rather splendid. The Chronovores as seraphim of the vortex are a rather frightening concept and the time scoop would find another life in The Five Doctors. I have a particular fondness for Episode Four though because I think it's the only time on television we see a duel between TARDISes. It all plays out like a sourcebook for an RPG. I'd enjoy playing The Time Monster module quite a bit, I think, even if the TV serial doesn't do it for me.

Fear Her There is great central idea here about a child's simple fear of being left alone after the destruction wrought on her family by an evil patricarch. Whose presence remains long after he's gone. So she finally meets a new friend, unfortunately that friend ends up causing more problems for her and those actions causes problems for everyone but she doesn't know how to stop it

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

But it also has that fabulous moment at the beginning where the Doctor has another go at parking the TARDIS because the entrance is blocked.

The Dominators acts as a cure for insomnia and has a rude joke.

Rings of Akhaten Robot of Sherwood Sleep no more Journey to the centre of the Tardis In the forest of the night Last Christmas The husbands of River Song The lie of the land
Positives: The good thing about often having to watch the more recent series on catch-up (being out-voted) is that one gets to read the reviews first and can give weaker stories a miss, with a bit of luck (still haven't seen any of these despite them being on the shelf)...

Which is rendered pointless narratively Clara's potential had her Mother lived and the associated feelings of loss being more sating the ALL the Doctor's experiences combined. plus the lullaby is Murray's worst work IMO.

I think there are much worse examples of that. And I know Michael was very happy with his role. They're both good one episode parts. And even if I agreed that's not a reason to call the episode 'weak'. "This episode is weak... its cast are too good."

But they were supporting roles....they did exactly what they needed to do with the parts. No-one would mark down City Of Death for Cleese only having a cameo, or The Eleventh Hour for giving Olivia Colman such a small part. Wishing they had larger parts, fair enough, but it's not as though anything was in their characters that was underused or needed more time. They filled their part of the ensemble just fine with Trougton being the sacrificial lamb to sell the very real threat.

Gentleman I'm not saying the parts were bad I'm saying with those Actors playing them, they were more engaging then Father Christmas and Clara so I would've liked them fleshed out a bit more.
The Father Christmas gimmick wore thin with me very quick.

I adore Last Christmas and it's defence of childhood innocence. ("Magic carrots" "Second sled")

Same for Journey, though I don't think it was as good as Last Christmas. The only thing I didn't like about the latter was Santa running about the place. I know it's a Christmas special, yadda yadda, but still....

The Dominators acts as a cure for insomnia and has a rude joke. The Dominators doesn't need defending. It is a great episode on its own merits.
