The Master seemed very comfortable in the role of a father, if Missy is to be believed they have had a daughter before. Bit of an interesting thought.

I like that Roberts played the Master as bitter and sour rather than “I always dress for the occasion”, we have enough “bananas” Masters. We have some wonderfully evil for the sake of evil Masters. An “evil for the sake of survival” Master is something different.

Just got around to it today. The Bekdel Test might be one of the funniest episodes BF have ever put out. Intrigued about where we go from here.

I know it’s River’s series, and therefore deserves her theme music, but I think it would have been cool to have the Master’s theme as a downloadable extra so we could replace the theme. Because, particularly the last story, it’s the Master’s story, River just happens to be there.

Started River 5 this week
Bekdel Test - I was expecting to enjoy this and I am pleased to report I enjoyed it even more than I expected. Loved the River/Missy interaction. The story was fairly simple and straightforward, but with such good characters / performers it didn't need to be anything more.
Quite simply, a really good listen. 'Nuff said.

My physical copy arrived today and I am once again reminded of how much I much I miss writer's & production notes on all the releases. Such a simple thing.

Finished the set.
Animal Instinct - excellent. From the title and blurb I had wondered if it would be some kind of follow-up to Survival but it wasn't. A good, enjoyable story. I think Beevers is my favourite BF Master.
Lifeboat and Deathboat - enjoyable enough. Probably most notable for the "Wow!" factor of getting Roberts than anything else. As a continuity geek I wish they had tied it up with Mastermind instead of contradicting it. Hopefully there is a follow-up and we get more Roberts.
Concealed Weapon - Another good enjoyable story. Noting really to find fault with, has whetted my appetite for War Master 3.

I finished the boxset over the last few days. Really solid set! No story flawed me, but all of the stories were really good, and River played off each incarnation of the Master really well. Probably the most consistent set Big Finish have released in a while, normally there is one dud and/or amazing story that stick out among the others, but all of these were just very enjoyable hours of Who. Kudos to all writers!

Finally got to Concealed Weapon. Unfortunately, I ended up disliking this one quite a bit. It bucks for 'Alien' and ends up as one of the Friday the 13th sequels. It's undercooked in all respects, especially where character intelligence is concerned. In this aspect, the story most resembles slasher horror and not in a good way (is there a good way?) For example, when people start dropping like flies (by apparent murder), River has the computer run a check, and when it registers an unknown stowaway, she thinks it's the Doctor...for some reason. This answer is deemed acceptable long enough for another crewmember to run into the Master and be taken completely by surprise (shock of all shocks) when she gets fried. It plays so much like slasher shlock that it skirts dangerously close to parody. The Master's cruel humor is classless even for his standards. The 'getting colder' bit, in particular, sounded like something more appropriate for Freddy Krueger. I hope I'm not being too harsh, but this one stunk. First War Master misfire for me.

That was one of my favourite parts about buying a physical disc when I first started Big Finish. I guess now they all come with Interviews etc. which is sort of the same thing.

The interview tracks can be great (I loved the extra-long subscriber extras with 'Muse of Fire' recently) but the detailed written Notes with older releases were something I too enjoy.
I understand that booklets cost money, but the Notes could go on the 'Behind the Scenes' tab on the release's web page at next to no cost and I'd be glad to see them.

In respect of the MR, they were meant to go there when BF first stopped doing the notes in the sleeves and some did, starting with release #198. Not sure when/why the practice ceased or if they're just a bit behind ...

Perhaps we only had to ask...

There’s nothing new in those notes, though. They were part of a news item a while back. I think they might have been used in Vortex also. Still, it’s nice that they’re on the product page as a permanent feature; they should do it for more releases.

Okay, those are good points and I can totally understand how you saw it that way. I only finished this box set a couple of days ago and am now just looking at other peoples' reactions to it. Me, I did not see it that way. But given the Master Theme of this box set, I already knew who it was and how totally wrong River was in expecting the Doctor. That, in itself, might be a flaw. All that remained was to find out just which Master was involved, and why. As the final entry in this series, even a cursory glance at the cast list would have revealed who it was. (as a huge fan of MacQueen, I'd have loved it if BF had pulled a huge fake-out and had him in here instead. Not that Sir Derek didn't do a splendid job, but just saying... )

I finished up this set today and while I feel like the front two stories are better than the back-end of the box set, I enjoyed the whole thing. My biggest problem with Concealed Weapon is I wanted more of it and felt like it would would have worked as a two-parter. In true Alien fashion I wanted to get to know the crew members better before they started dying off. And as for Lifeboat and Deathboat, I feel like Eddie Ronson's script works well enough but Eric Roberts isn't a very compelling voice actor and his version of The Master just struck me as flat and sounded disengaged from most of the things going on in the play.

My take on Vol 5 has just landed at CultBox - We're so spoiled these days that Derek Jacobi reprising his Master isn't headline news anymore!

I'd like her to be paired with her on screen crews in future sets, whether that's the Library gang or Ramone & Nardole. It'd be a bit different to these audio ones that inevitably die at the end. I was quite surprised that the student in Animal Instinct actually returned and survived the story after being "sacrificed."
