I'm not the biggest fan of Five on TV, but I love his audios. I find so many of his are among the best Who that BF has done. Iterations of I, Creatures of Beauty, River Song, The Stockbridge Trilogy, Aquitaine, Equilibrium, The Peterloo Massacre and so many more, especially The KIngmaker. Davison is so good at humor that you really feel that JNT really missed the boat keeping him so straight during his run. I do appreciate him more now that I have heard all of his BF work than I did before. Same here. I happen to enjoy more of his audio stories than the TV ones, and his companions are much more better on audio: Nyssa and Adric are more developed and Tegan is a much more rounded character and much funnier I also like the sarcastic /impatient streak Yeah, I really didn't like Tegan on TV. It wasn't until I heard Janet Fielding doing her for BF that I started to appreciate her sense of humor rather than find her whiney and annoying.

Completely agree, do you think that is down to the quality of the BF writers more than Janet's tv performances having weaker writing for the character?

Completely agree, do you think that is down to the quality of the BF writers more than Janet's tv performances having weaker writing for the character? Absolutely. TV Tegan is pretty 2 dimensional, just there to annoy the Doctor, and never seemed to have any appreciation or awe at the things she was doing or seeing. The lack of any lightness or sense of humor among the Tardis crew made her even more grating. BF Tegan is a completely the opposite. Courageous with a sense of humor, and you get a sense that she has come to really love and appreciate The Doctor and her fellow companions, and that her roughness and whining is just a very powerful defense mechanism.

Yes. On TV she was always whining and complaining. On audio she has a sense of humor and she's more resourceful There's this glorious moment (which I'll be oblique about for spoilers) in The Emerald Tiger where I had to stop the story and go: Wait, no... No, they can't do that. Can they? I ended up surprising myself, I missed Tegan a lot more than I was expecting as the story went on. I know for a lot of people Big Finish supplements Sixie's run on television and I think the stories with Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa basically did the same for me with Season 20. Listening to them was a joy, they felt like an actual team; sparking off, instead of against one another.

He's one of my favourite companions for Five. I love what's been done with him on audio, playing up his complex character. Turlough can be so many things at once and yet he's still always Turlough. It's really clever.

Hello again.
In my meandering journey through 5th Doctor I have completed my Nyssa collection including some from the ones with Tegan and Turlough.
Highlights: Spare Parts, the doomladen atmosphere, the drunken Doctorman Allen and the way the Doctor and Nyssa explore the horrors on this world is haunting and memorable.
Creatures of Beauty: Confusing, but if you stick with it the finale is brutal.
Circular Time: A charming anthology, Summer and Autumn particularly good.
Fanfare for the Common Men: Absolute corker! I would have loved to see this on TV. Easily in top ten stories ever.
I did listen to The Game, Winter for the Adept and a couple of others. As the only companion here Nyssa is more confrontational than on TV. Her dry sense of humour is more evident too.

Hello again. Time for part two.
I took Timelord007's advice and read some of Mr Bradley's Basement reviews of the Davison era. Very informative and interesting to see his timeline too.
I started the 5th Doctor and Team 80s Tardis collection on BBC Radio 4Extra with Cobwebs, Whispering Forest and Cradle of the Snake. It was great to hear the TARDIS crew of my youth.
The stories were interesting and I soon purchased a few more when they appeared in the sale. A very diverse set of stories. I started with the hilarious Sontar's Army. Heroes of Sontar was a romp with Tegan having a whale of a time insulting these rather dense soldiers.
The Emerald Tiger was a mystical and immersive experience that I found fascinating to listen to. A great guest cast too.
The Butcher of Brisbane was grim and scary. Lots of sacrifices made and that evil Findaker was very creepy. Nyssa and Turlough's role in the story was different to what they usually did on TV.
My journey finished with Prisoners of Fate. Ow my head hurts. Some great ideas with a vengeful TARDIS, an awful decision for Nyssa and a Doctor desperate to put things right.
The Fifth Doctor is a grittier character on audio. He is more used to the foibles of his companions and let's them get on with it. The interplay between him and the t'riffic trio has been a treat to listen to.
So now, a couple of Fifth Doctor and Turlough stories and then it's off to Ancient Egypt...

I really enjoy Davison on audio. I liked his era on TV but I always felt it was constrained by budget and by JNT's instructions to avoid any kind of humour. Davison is a wonderful comic actor. BF have given him a broader range of styles of story, from swashbucklers to horrors to more humorous tales... they've let his performance grow and develop, and I really like it. He's fun, he's acerbic, he's gritty when he needs to be... and it does help that he's had some great stories on audio.

In the early days of Big Finish the Fifth Doctor often seemed somewhat ignored. People were excited about Colin Baker as it gave them the chance to better serve his Doctor after his poor treatment on TV, about McCoy as we hadn't seen all his life so there was plenty to explore and for McGann to get brand new stories with the current Doctor. Davison was always very good but his Doctor more constrained, with less gaps to explore and two of his more distinctive companions missing there was less to get excited about.
In the last few years with Tegan and Adric back in the fold Davison has seemed completely energised holding onto his old performance but adding new dimensions to it. Quality wise his main range stories are head and shoulders above the others of late and the ones I always try and listed to straight away.

Hello again.
Well that was a thrilling ride. From Ancient Egypt to Peladon, I have been travelling with the Fifth Doctor, Peri and Erimem.
What a great series of historicals and a logical way for Erimem to leave the TARDIS. I have had a blast. I heard Eye of the Scorpion, The Church and the Crown, No Place like Home, Council of Nicaea, The Kingmaker, Son of the Dragon and Bride of Peladon.
Eye of the Scorpion is an exciting historical adventure where the Doctor and Peri get swept up in the intrigue and danger of Ancient Egypt. You really feel totally immersed in the action listening to this. Erimem is an example of a companion from history who just works. Her unique sensibility and viewpoint make her time in the TARDIS memorable.
The Church and the Crown is a very traditional historical with a slight comedic element. The conflict between church and state is dealt with well. Nicola Bryant is great in this and Caroline Morris once again contributes much to the story. The relationship between the two and their very different perspectives gives this run of stories a real edge and some sparkle too.
Council of Nicaea could easily have featured among the early Hartnell historicals. The conflicts in this story are fascinating to see unfold. The characters from history are well drawn and all concerned learn from their experiences.

Hello again.
When studying Yorkist and Tudor history at A level, I wish I'd had The Kingmaker to listen to. What a cheeky but serious look at a controversial historical figure. Richard III is played extremely well by Stephen Beckett.
The cast is excellent. Peter Davison, Nicola Bryant and Caroline Morris have a ball with the script which weaves an engrossing and amusing tale. Who writes history? What is true and what isn't? What is the Doctor's role in his many forays into Earth history? Superb.
You will need a strong stomach to deal with the brutal terror of The Son of the Dragon. It is not what is presented but the images in the mind created by a well-told and well acted story. A complete contrast to the previous story and one that stays in the mind.
Bride of Peladon, a return to my favourite planet. Ice Warriors, Alpha Centauri and everyone's favourite furry beast. If you enjoyed Curse of Peladon this is a sequel that embroiders another rich tale into the saga. Another strong cast, Phyllida Law in particular is excellent. A great end to Erimem's time in the TARDIS.
So, if you like historical stories, this sequence is well-worth exploring. The relationship between these two strong ladies is brilliantly portrayed. Peter Davison works really well with this team.
It makes you wonder if Nu-Who would ever be this creative or brave enough to have a companion from history like our fabulous Pharaoh.
