Once a Who Fan always a Who Fan.It is easy to get lost in the negativity levelled at the show but its been around all my Who Life.But Doctor Who has brightened my life since i was a kid and am 53 now.I have liked some Doctors more than others,some stories more than others,but it was still Doctor Who.when it got cancelled i was gutted yep but hey i was busy working and when it came back i was there for it with everyone in my extended family.Some liked one Doctor ,others liked another but despite the differences these new fans are still Fans.
I like Jenna Coleman,Karen Gillan,Pearl Mackie,Billie Piper and Freema hell i loved them all and rewatching episodes i still love them all.
Having A Female at the Helm Of the Tardis is a big thing for me and i will learn to embrace the change and hopefully in twenty years i will still be discussing the show.
Sometimes when you step back a bit from something you can see its still a wonderful show.

Spending time on this forum as opposed to others is a good way to avoid unnecessary negativity. There are occasions when some posts may seem determined to diminish this wonderful show, but this is rare. Any of us can have a moan from time to time (I certainly do) - it isn't as if everything Who-related is greeted with open arms, but for the most part, any complaints are put forward in a non-combative way and are greeted in a similar manner.
I stepped back from Big Finish a little recently, but find I am absolutely loving their output once again ( Red Planets: I'm looking at you). The new television series I'm less interested in - but that's okay, we can't all love everything. And we're not expected to - it's all good. To me, Doctor Who in all its forms should be an escape from the negativity of the 'real world', not an extension of it  |

Hello again.
I remember there was a lot of negativity about the Capaldi stories on transmission. It was only with his final season that we saw a grudging ok.
I realised straight away that this was going to be a gritty, irascible and non-cuddly Doctor. The earsplitting screech of the theme music gave that away.
I have completed a rewatch of all Capaldi's stories and while the tone is uneven at times, Capaldi's first and last seasons are best. I think Clara should have gone at Last Christmas. The whole thread about choosing between her boyfriend and the Doctor worked really well and that episode was a natural closing point.
Season 9 really didn't work for me even on second viewing except the Zygon story, the Davros story and Heaven Sent. That's half a season that totally passed me by I'm afraid.
The other controversial element of the Capaldi era was Missy. She was able to confront the Doctor at every turn with his actions. Was he a good person. Were his actions always the right thing to do.
Season 10,sees the Doctor more relaxed. Still gruff and irascible but thawing under the cheeky influence of Bill. There is also the question of Missy. Can a leopard change his/her spots? Of course not.
In summary, I find Capaldi's era has more to digest than Matt Smith's time. There is a darker much less approachable Doctor. His companion, our viewpoint is torn between TARDIS life and real life.
War, immortality, relationships, death and the afterlife, choices and their consequences and the nature of good and evil are all dealt with in a variety of interesting ways.
We are lucky that we can rewatch an era of the dhow and enjoy and discover new delights from our favourite show. No production team goes out to make a bad show.
I suspect Chibnall's crew are confident in their version of Dr Who. Some will like it, some won't and some in a few years time will rewatch and say well maybe that was better than I thought it was.

I love Twelve's years, but I do think Moffatt lost touch with the general audience and needed to make the series event-driven in some capacity. While taking the slow road in Series 8 to establish Twelve was understandable (and we had Missy looming in the background), the Hybrid arc was even more loosely applied then prior series and Moffatt making Clara's depature the series wasn't anything new for the majority of the audience and Series 10 pretty much just straight out adventure after the Missy reveal. There wasn't really much of a hook for the audience to come back to, time and time again.
It didn't help that Danny and Clara's relationship was very adult (we've both got problems, so this will work) and not easily understood by kids. Amy and Rory were better handled in this regard.

I know I am a minority, but I have always been different from other people...  But I very much agree with the OP- this forum is great. I felt immediately welcome and I love reading other people's stories and opinions. I have been to very negative and toxic places on the internet and avoid them at all costs. Life is too precious to waste on toxic people. So being here is a welcome change. As for the new series- I have learned to try to keep an open mind and to try to give things a chance or two. And I feel it would be hypocritical of myself to start critizising the show before I got into it, because, a few years back, I went on record telling my Whovian then- flatmates that they were not right in their mind watching this show at all because it was cheap looking non-sensical b*llsh*t(that was in the Tennant era). How times have changed. Think and inform yourself before you open your mouth has never been truer than in my case... because now I am on the receiving end of some "brainwashing" jokes. Damn my big mouth. So, yeah, I am looking forward to the new series and I am quite curious about the changes. |

Samee love series 9+10 (tbh, even more minority i think series 8 is amazing too and even tho it has lower lows than capaldis other seasons i think it has higher hoghs that tips it for me) and i really think capaldis era is underrated. And yes it is a (almost) completly positive area. Some things happen like the the Dark shadows thread yesterday and in the political enviroment we are in it can get heated but it is on the whole a very nice & safe space at least compared to se other community's. |

Capaldi's Doctor seems really popular among posters here (please feel free to disagree) and I certainly agree with you that series 9 and 10 are the best 'nu-who' we have had (no love story between the Doctor and his companion, no Doctor as Messiah, no squabbling husband and wife combos - although Clara and Danny had their moments! - and few increasingly irritating 'eccentric' moments). Capaldi managed to embrace what is good about 'nu-who' and still provide the grounded-ness of the early classic series Doctors. I've said this before, I know, but I was gutted when he announced his departure - even more so when, within the fiction of the show, the Twelfth Doctor tried in vain to with-hold his inevitable regeneration ("I can't keep being someone else," is a killer line, heart-breakingly delivered). The whole depaerture was only made slightly easier for me as a fan when the Doctor surrendered willingly to what was to come. Love it. |

I have rewatched Capaldi now I still have some reservation but not about anyone’s performance and I have to say it wasn’t as if the BBC had cut its budget as the effects and costumes were excellent.I still cannot understand why though given the standard of storytelling in BF why they didn’t consult them instead of BF consulting BBC it really is the wrong way round😁 |

I think Series 8 had faults in terms of some of the weak plotting and the characterisation of the 12th Doctor (too serious and angst ridden).
I watched series 9 with a smile on my face as he showed elements of past doctors in his body language and outlook. The plots had tightened up too. To me this continued to develop in series 10.
If there is any criticism from me of Capaldi's era, it is that the gaps in broadcasts meant that we (or myself at least) never really got the feeling he was a full time Doctor, in spite of the episode run. It was like he was on screen for short periods over the course of 4 years, and a lot of waiting in between.
So, not much grounds for negativity by me, and it's a pity some forget how splendid so much of it was, in terms of capturing the essential 'Who-ish-ness' of the series in a way that made the 2005 series rather low-fi by comparison.
Too many fans seem like armchair Stanley Kubrick's whereby they have an ideal of perfectionism that is actually very difficult to achieve within any reasonable time and budgetary constraint.

Haha, I did not even realize that people on here are so fond of Capaldi's Doctor. I have not been on the forum long enough I guess. I meant more in general, for example when I am randomly browsing the web or even in my fan club where I am the odd one out. ;-)
And I definitely agree with you on the Doctor/ Companion love story or the Messiah aspects- I also find these massively annoying and I think this is what soured Tennants era for me.
And I also was quite sad when I heard that Capaldi was leaving and I admit I had an initial adverse reaction to the 13th Doctor. But that was not Jodi Whittakers fault, I think I would have reacted like that to any actor. And I cried at the end of the Christmas Special...

I think I can honestly say that Capaldi's Doctor is my favourite of the new series Doctors (It's a tough choice between him and Tennant). However, I also feel that his tenure is my least favourite since 2005. It might seem somewhat contradictory, but the man was born to play the Doctor, you can see it. For me, It just felt like he was the beautifully- shaped square peg and series 8,9 and 10 were the round holes.
In another universe, he may have been the perfect movie Doctor, this generation's Cushing Dr or even Doc Brown.
I don't hold any hate for those three seasons, each one contained some lovely moments, and some very unforgettable episodes. I have a fondness for Bill, also probably my favourite new series companion, and Missy especially (Just wait until those three are reunited @ Big Finish!). I just find that, in retrospect, I began to fall out of love for the show during those years, and it is tough to pinpoint an exact reason.
Right now, I am very much looking forward to seeing how season 11 plays out, and remain hopeful it will be a hit.

This is actually an opinion I have heard many times, also from friends in my fan club (the reason for my original assumption that the 12th Doctor was not so well liked). Maybe this is shared among fans who have been with the show for longer? Not sure.
I also love Bill, and Missy has certainly grown on me. I really hope we have not heard the last of them. And Nardole of course. He started out as an annoying comic relief and became so much more.

Moffat, like RTD, JNT and Graham Williams before him, has suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous 'fans' who seem to slate anything current. His star will rise again once Chris Chibnall is in the firing line. Sad, but true, I'm afraid. Being the show-runner must be an amazing job in so many ways, and thankless when it comes to online vicious fingers!
One Doctor Who moment I remember really catching everyone by surprise, in a mouth-dropping sort of way, during RTD's time, was when the Face Of Boe revealed 'you are not alone' to the Doctor, and Professor Yana's name suddenly took on new, incredible connotations in Utopia. I loved that. Steven Moffat's moment of equal mind-blowing revelation was the cliffhanger to World Enough and Time, with twist piled on twist. What an incredible writer, when he's on form. No need to duck behind that desk!  |

The guitar solo no must admit not a fan at all. Guitar in Tardis yes but outside open air arena with a tank. This is the same Doctor who was careful not to introduce elements of the future into the past for fear of......I have trouble even with Amy and Rory walking about in their 20th century clothes initially in Venice.Yes its a great character defining moment but it is also not taking subject matter seriously.I loved Moffat it was a tough job and he is a genuine fan And Matt and Amy are actually one of my favourite duos.I have said before i cannot wait till he starts BF stories without the pressure of running the show he has great ideas.I prefer Moffat to RTD definitely.But hell i like them both they both have tried and thats all you can ask. |

We had the clips of old companions and a 'death scene' and everything. While I was glad we got one more Moffat/Capaldi story, and while the idea of the Doctor's struggle to hold off regeneration was an interesting one, I think - ultimately - the eventual Christmas story was highly anti-climactic, despite David Bradley's reappearance. |
