A excellent emotional historical drama which showcases how prejudice destroys families & relationships, loving the more serious tone of this series & while i do find were lacking stronger menacing villains & a overall threat this episode moved me to tears, this was Doctor Who at it's most rawest & emotional, great performances, excellent direction & brilliantly written.
5/5.

5.8 million for Demons of the Punjab, for those who are interested! Not terrible...but considering the time slot is moving to 6.30 next week we can expect it to fall further. For comparison though the new David Attenborough series only got 5.9million last night

Granted, it was debatable if Dynasties could pull the numbers of Blue Planet, but maybe both it and Demons, with the good buzz, will do better on catch up.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Just watched it: it might not have been good Doctor Who - and you are welcome to that opinion - but it was a f*cking excellent hour of television. It explained a particularly grim piece of history and made it relevant to the world of today. To those who say that the Doctor is being ineffectual and weak are completely missing the point: this is the first Doctor to respect the web of time and give second chances in a way that no Doctor has done for many incarnations. The way she saw through the situation while still knowing what was going to happen spoke of a character who knows what real pain is and how to deal with it while still doing the job that needs to be done.
I'm loving this season: it's the most intelligent - as opposed to clever - that the show has been in a long time.

It would be a shame to see it drift into the four millions during the last few weeks of the series.

Sorry, I meant evidence that the Doctor Who ratings will fall because its on earlier. I seem to remember fans saying that Capaldi ratings were dropping because it was on later. And, you can't compare a documentary with a drama.

I did enjoy this episode. Although the Aliens i felt werent needed. The idea of the secrets in Yaz's familiy past were a better hook and we all know who the real Demons were.
The use of Qawwali music was spot on

It could go either way, though it is important to remember that overalls, not overnight, are how the Beeb measure success. So long as the 4s are not that, we'll be fine. The finale usually gets a boost, so it could easily finishes in the mid to high 7s.
Plus, this Sunday everyone got hit because of Remembrance: even Strictly didn't crack 9m.

As usual late to the party. Just watched it. I do not want to repeat all the positive things that have already been said in this thread. Yes, this was great. I even cried a tear, so it was certainly emotionally involving. Great creature design, the aliens looked fantastic. The landscapes and look of the episode were wonderful. I did learn something about Indian history which we never learned in school and only very partially had heard from an Indian friend. It got me emotionally involved. The story itself was serviceable and certainly well written. Yes, there was no big alien invasion threat and the Tardis team was only there to observe- but what is wrong with that? I thought it was a refreshing change of pace.
As for the question "Was this really Doctor Who"? How can this NOT be Doctor Who? Seriously. This is a series about tolerance, respect, loyalty and friendship that can tell any story in time and space. In the past year I listened to a Big Finish musical (Pirates), a Big Finish news media story (Live 34), Panto (One Doctor), a wonderful funny and witty story entirely made up from Whatsapp messages ("Girl Power!" in the book the Missy Chronicles), horror, tragedy, comedy, high science fiction, fantasy, I have watched, read and listened to historicals where the Doctor is just a spectator and I listened to stories where he willingly or accidently destroys whole worlds, or saves them. This is EXACTLY what it should be. Like in Star Trek the Vulcan IDIC princible. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.
Next week appears to be another weird comedy/ horror sci-fi mashup. Bring it on. I am still not head over heels for this series, but I am still onboard.

I actively disliked this last night, but watched it again this afternoon (something I haven't done before with this latest series). Unusual for me, but I changed my mind, it was a little slow but I really did enjoy it second time around.

I had this happen to me several times before. Great you gave it a second chance.

So I've had time for it to stew and I genuinely hope this is the episode that defines Jodie's Doctor. Specifically the wedding scene. This Doctor being a source of optimism and joy in a dark, unforgiving universe that isn't forgiving to those traits in a person. I finally feel like I know who she is and the more I think about it, the more I just love this kind and beautiful alien we find in this Doctor.

Well i feared my underwhelmed reaction last night may have been due to expectations, sort of in a last jedi way where people thought it was bad because it wasnt what they expected, it was bad. Now whilst i still have some issues with this story and imo it isnt a 10/10 like people are scoring, it is still very good certainly not the worst of the series as i was feeling yesterday. So good things, i loved the story, the historical setting was a bit more subtle than Rosa, altho i think Rosa worked with being more obvious, and it did really work. I had a trouble with a lot of the characters except the younger brother first time around but this improved second time as did the “villians”. My main issue was the writing was quite clunky in parts, more so than Chibs supposed clunky scripts and i like how the doctors main action in this story was marrying the two people, the speech and the way Jodie performed it made me purely cringe, didnt feel that first or second time as with the man line that felt really shoehorned in. Maybes if it had been a pure historical i may have felt slightly more for the characters? Then again the younger brother really resonated with me both times and i liked yazs nan as well, it was mainly the not grandad who i didnt connect with as much. The highlight had to be graham tho, who was chuffing brilliant. Honestly hes becoming one of my favourite companions he was great in this in both his key scenes (that hug made me cry both times) Overall probs 4th out if the 6 so far, just above arachnids and the ghost monument. I have prefered the pacing and weiting and plotting of some of the others more (Dont care what people say, Tsuranga was great) but it was still a good doctor who story and the series still feels so fresh after 6 years of Moffat, and thats from someone who loved capaldis era) a strong 3/5 or 7.5/10

I was waiting for someone to ask so i can explain why i dont like the 5* system! You see, my main issue is to say something is 5/5, is insinuating its perfect, however is a 9/10 perfect? No otherwise it would be ten out of ten. Therefore ill only ever rate something 5/5 if its of course 10/10 However this leaves the mega massive problem that then youve got 9 other score to fit in to 4 other stars which is not even so i usually go 4/5 = 9/10 - 8/10 and have 3/5 = 7/10 -5/10. The rest is the same tho. But yeah personally i would rather have ten options but alas thats not the case so i have to make do.

I walked away thinking her empathy came shining through.
