Now this was the Season Finale i wanted. Sure some gags felt a bit shoehorned in and Yaz barely did a thing, but for the other 95% it was spot on. A solo Dalek is always way more frightening than an Army of them. Although since this Reconnaissance Dalek was one of the first to leave Skaro, should it have known who the Doctor was? Also i thought the how long is a rel joke was going to be a reference to Dalek Invasion of Earth Aren't all rel references for Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.?
I thought having it be an early Skaro recon Dalek was building up to the exact same thing, that the Dalek would not know The Doctor. Maybe part of Chibnall's fresh sweep again? I guess not. Must admit I kinda liked thinking they'd not know The Doc, so little was done with that after Oswin wiping the Dalek memory bank in S7 I thought Chibnall was doing something with it here.
I meant that the number of rels could have been when the Invasion Force arrived so that maybe some of the message got out . But yeah it would have been nice for a change for them not to have known the Doctor

I can't wait to actually watch this episode. I "watched" it last night on Space (the channel that airs DW here), but they made such a complete clusterf*** of it, I could barely follow what was happening.
This 60 minute episode was put in a 90 minute timeslot here, and used every last one of those 30 minutes for commercials -- with increasing frequency in the second half. For the last 45 minutes of the show (ie the entire second half), I was so annoyed that I actually started keeping track: 10+ ad commercial break, seven minutes of show, twelve ad break, just over five minutes of show, FIFTEEN ad commercial break, six minutes of show, TWELVE ads commercial break.
It was to the point that the second half of the show was nearly incomprehensible.

Regarding the dissolution of UNIT, I thought the response to the Doctor's pleas were probably what would happen in such a situation. The Doctor imploring the find out more about the disbandment, whilst stating how vital the organization was in seeing off potential alien invasions ... only to be met with the pig-headed and condescending "Well, we're not being invaded now, are we?" This is exactly the self-righteous rhetoric that officials would (or will) use when making such calamitous decisions. Whilst I don't think UNIT is gone forever by any means, that moment is one of the story's highlights for me.

Surely, though Brexit will have international fallout, an organisation based in Geneva (with Switzerland not even in the EU) as a UN offshoot wouldn't be folded due to UK isolationism? Are Kate and Osgood on Universal Credit now? Maybe in the Who Universe Brexit is even worse than real life and has really jeopardised international security with the UN in tatters? Either that or Chibnall forgot they weren't just British and that the UK Gov could abolish them!

Well, to be fair (hate that expression), Brexit was never explicitly mentioned as a reason for UNIT's demise. And it isn't as if there haven't always been authorities beyond the UK more than willing to tighten the leash on 'public spending.' I found that cutting the budget to fund UNIT to be just as comparable to, say, Uncle Trump's ongoing environmental cuts. You can imagine the conversation - "But Mr President, these cuts could mean the end of the world!" "Well, the world hasn't ended yet, has it?"

Oh my........now I haven’t watched the rest of Jodie’s tenure as the doctor, I don’t want to get into that again......
But watched the new year special since I was at friends and they wanted to watch it.........
I am shocked, the episode I watched seems to bear no resemblance to everyone’s thoughts..... Glad people are getting something out of it........but so happy I have stayed away
What’s happened to the writing, has it all been like this? Clunky dialogue, lots of meaning less exposition, and a plot so stupid the 6 year old we watched with kept pointing out plot holes.
Well I will only say even the worst things BF has done ever! are so much better than that was, no wonder they don’t have extras the actors could no could say oh is “so well written....”
Glad it’s got its fans but nothing to do with Jodie, she was ok.....very much cool mum vibe.....exactly as I expected not bad but not great either......
But bad, really bad......sorry guys.......tv should be so much better than this, syfi channel does better than this......never thought I would say that just looked and sounded cheap!
Just thought I would share my views sorry not more positive I so wish I had been wrong........
Oh yeah and Bradley Walsh is just as annoying as he is in everything he does but sure everyone thinks that.....hehehe

I actually think Bradley has been great this season. A pleasant surprise. Definitely. I was skeptical of his casting to begin with (I haven't seen him on anything other than The Chase), but Graham was my favourite of the new team by the end of the first episode. He's been fantastic.

Either that or Chibnall f orgot they weren't just British and that the UK Gov could abolish them!I think that's right - that's what comes of messing with well-established acronyms! (Yes younger fans, U.N.I.T. are really the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce and they serve the whole world as a shining example of internationalism.) Presumably UNIT even defend countries which spectacularly muck up their international relations! Alien invaders probably don't care about immigration targets or fish quotas (OK maybe the Selachians do but not generally.)
Not only that, the political point was very clunky and just plain wrong: Britain is vastly a net contributor to European intelligence and defence and it's a credit to (sensible) politicians across all UK parties that they have never tried to make that a Brexit 'bargaining chip'. The UK and France provide most of Europe's contribution to NATO and will do post-Brexit and so in the Whoniverse they presumably provide most of Europe's contribution to UNIT.
And the Brig. and Kate and Osgood are contributions so priceless we're due a few centuries of mutual defence as payback imo.

Meanwhile on Twitter:

I’ve only listened to the The Coup so far so might be wrong, but didn’t Big Finish’s original UNIT series concern the U.K. Government attempting to shutdown and replace the U.K. UNIT contingent? Presumably second time round they succeeded.

Well it wasn't perfect (please no one get me started, lol...) but I thoroughly enjoyed the vast majority of it, it was probably my favorite episode of the whole season in spite of formidable competition for that honor, and most likely lands season 11 firmly in the best standing of any New Series season to date in my opinion, even for as highly as I think of Capaldi's fantastic final season. In fact, as Holiday specials go, I probably enjoyed Resolution twice as much as Husbands (except for the ending of Husbands which is absolutely priceless) and five times as much as Mysterio. I didn't mind the way things went with UNIT or that Kate and Osgood didn't get make an appearance. I would have loved that but I'm really not quite sure they'd have fit comfortably into the episode so I'm happy that they got prominent honorable mention. I'm also very impressed with how well Chibnall made the lone Dalek routine work in new ways here which I think was very successful, both conceptually and visually. That must have saved a pile of money on special effects as well as affording us with a pleasing number of lines for everyone's favorite Dalek, Nicholas Briggs. All that's definitely worth some extra points from me. Thank you Chris Chibnall (and everyone) for a happy start to the Happy New Year!

So when Ryan's dad turns up there is this exchange -
The Doctor: Ryan's Dad. Yaz: It's complicated. The Doctor: Yeah. Dads are...So I've heard.
Confirmation of Lungbarrow? The Doctor never had a dad because they were Loomed!
