There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The thing about a show with a history as long as Doctor Who is that you can always find an example to the contrary. Quite a lot of Doctors had a brilliant first series and an average second series (3, 4, 11) and I'm frankly really tired of the "let down by the writing" cliche. The writing was fine, as consistent per episode as any other modern series. Series 11 had more "very good" episodes than most series did and fewer duds. All it lacked - and YMMV here, I admit - was a standout episode on the level of Blink or Midnight or Vincent. I thought it superior to series' 6 and 7, though. Oops I completely forgot to give you an answer, sorry ! I quite agree. Although series 11 is far from being my favorite - from NuWho at least, series 4 and 10 are the best in my opinion because Moffat and RTD really gave it their all for their last hurrah - I don't think it's bad at all. I really enjoyed watching and rewatching TWWFTE, Demons of the Punjab, Rosa, It Takes you Away and Resolution. The rest is in general above average for me, nothing bad but nothing dreadful. There are signs that things could improve and I enjoy Thirteen and her crew, especially Graham. Chibnall gave us one of the best Daleks episodes in NuWho in my opinion. If the first half of series 11 is not that exciting, the second is better and Chibnall has already shown he can do better, for example with Torchwood series 2 which was a definite improvement over series 1. And I also agree with you regarding series 6 and 7, series 11 was better. I really hate Matt Smith's tenure apart from Rory who was its saving grace. For all that it embraces modern television values and scripting essentials, series 11 felt very much like traditional Who: we got a regeneration story in which the Doctor was a little unhinged for a while then we got a set of stories that you could - almost - watch in any order or even miss a couple episodes of without too much trouble in understanding the plot. I don’t understand the cry from people who said there weren’t any “Doctor-y moments”: after the bombast of the last few years, it felt good to have a character who managed things without getting overly dramatic and only got excited about little things or mysteries. While I loved Tennant and Capaldi’s takes on the character, the bragging got a bit much at times and Whittaker’s manner felt a little more confident without overdoing it so that when we did get a big moment (for me, it was Resolution’s phone call to the Dalek) it felt a lot bigger and more important because we hadn’t had half-a-dozen similar moments already. I really think that Chibnall has a much better grasp on what the show is about than people give him credit for.

I hated all the bragging & condescending speeches which ending up basically being Doctor Who saying the same thing over & over again. That final speech 12 gave before regenerating was appalling. 13 reminds me most of 5. A cool older sibling rather than an authority figure. & of course a new showrunner brings a new tone. If they didn't what would be the point? Doctor Who thrives on renewal.

Looks promising, but I thought that when I saw the S11 trailer, so I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet. Though, I do love Thirteen in a tux, and I like the new look of the Cybermen, from what was shown in the trailer.

Well, that trailer looks great. Actually looking forward to that. I wasn't entirely sold on series 11, but that only means that there is room for improvement. And if the trailer is anything to go by, they might just be doing that. Bring it on.

Racnos and Judoon. I guess we know which showrunner Chibnall's a bigger fan of.
And yeah, Goran's definitely playing Tesla.

Looks like they have been busy this past year - if that's a foretaste of the overall pace and tone of what's to come then it's going to be quite a ride for Saturday evenings (if that is the returning slot as reported). Thumbs up.

Judoon, Racnoss, and - OMG - Cybermen. Doesn't it all look ten times more promising than Series 11! Now... let's hope for a story arc and a two-part finale.

I know people seem to be getting hyped for the Racnoss but are we sure it’s definitely the Racnoss and not them just reusing costume as a new alien?
Also, the fact we’re getting two parters this series worries me because the majority of the episodes in S11 felt long enough as they were so I can only imagine how much a two parter is going to drag along if it’s the same quality as S11...

For what its worth, I thought that the use of the two part story structure in series 9 & 10 was a big improvement in allowing story writers scope to have it both ways. Plenty of action, but also space to build a setting and characters with some greater depth and time for audience suspense and build up. So many single episode stories of new who are like the old two part stories (Awakening, Black Orchid, The Rescue, Sontaran Experiment, etc), as things have to be kept lean, otherwise its a runaround with lots of plot exposition. To my mind at least, it was the six part plus stories of old that suffered from padding to make use of budgets, whereas most four part stories, equivalent to two new series episodes, were just about right. Its precisely why I prefer the BF main range as opposed to their Fourth Doctor adventures. It also allows the production crew to spend more on one story, which is good provided the scripts are robust enough. Just one view though, so I appreciate if you prefer single episode trips, as do many viewers - Russell T Davies also, argued that modern audiences want to see things wrapped up on the night without having to await seven days to find out what happened next.

The 2 Part story rumours odd as Chibbs is on record saying 8-10 Eps total and there's 7 confirmed writers, now that could mean writing in pairs but that could backfire especially if there's a pace change between the 2.
