Yeah, we haven't quite got an alien villain outside of Tzim-Sha yet. Antagonists, sure, but no honest-to-goodness villains. This season reminds much more like the first series of Space: 1999 in that regard, it's a lot more about the intellectual puzzles than a straightforward aggressor.
I've two theories bouncing around in my head at the moment as to why that might be the case. It's possible that they've invested all their creative energy into making sure that the recurring protagonists are working first and foremost, the bad guys falling by the wayside as a result. Alternatively, it might be a side effect of a new/preexisting edict from the higher-ups at the BBC. No way to prove it either way, but it'll be interesting looking back on this in a couple of years and seeing just how the production process went.
Scroll down to the bottom. I talk about something that may correlate here: Interesting... Well, that scans with the tone so far. I can definitely see elements of both backgrounds finding their way into the scripts. I did a little bit of research and Bucktowonsing's done a lot of developmental work from the looks of it. She has a degree in English Literature and a diploma in Script Development, the latter she achieved while working for the Script Factory to help foster screenwriting talents. Good idea getting someone onboard who's well-versed in workshopping screenplays alongside other writers, it's a perfect skill for script editing.
In addition to the above two, it could also be a case of stretching their proverbial legs and getting comfortable with their ethos for the series.

I thought this would be an unpopular opinion but I agree,
We need known villains returning. in fact "Tim Shaw" should've been a lone Sontaran IMO.
So for Series 12, depending on how long it is, should have at least 2 of the returning long term big bad's.

Get the Mara back!

I would like a proper Dalek story, one which which shows them as the cunning, ruthless and terrifying exterminating force of 'Power', 'Genesis' and 'Resurrection'. Maybe doing the tricks of 'Power' - concealing their nature until it it's too late and only the Doctor knows how evil and deadly they are. While everyone else tries to be understanding and gives the strange new aliens the benefit of the doubt...
Coming from this Doctor, a story where she identifies an enemy as creatures of pure, violent hatred - and they turn out to be just that! - would have huge impact. And the Doctor and friends defeat them and escape with their lives, just about, but otherwise it's 'Fang Rock' all the way... (I'd say there was a 0% chance of such a Dalek story now but I'm sure it would be a big hit and an instant classic just as similar stories were in the 60s/70s/80s.)

As they’ve shown a willingness to do some more bizarre and out there ideas, a Mara return could work quite well.

I feel like this one series off from returning monsters was a good idea, but some in Series 12 would be a good choice as their return can be a proper event.
Give the Daleks a proper outing, something akin to their portrayal in Series 1 where it’s effectively Dalek see-Dalek kill (or try to). As essentially a form of pure evil they would clash dramatically with the ever optimistic and hopeful 13th Doctor that has been established so far.

In all seriousness, I do think the Monk would work well for this era and would provide a nice link of continuity to the lore while also being very open to story possibilities that would keep in line with the current approach. And played by Hugh Laurie.

And played by Hugh Laurie. What kind of interpretation do you envisage from Hugh Laurie? The straight actor of House and The Night Manager, or the affable buffoon of Jeeves and Wooster, Fry and Laurie, Blackadder. Not so much the fool, but as with the Meddling Monk or yore, a less than 'Masterful' (geddit?) nor malevolent, renegade. Any thoughts on Graham Garden's interpretation alongside Sheridan Smith and Paul McGann? I thought it was spot on, script and performance wise to the character, insofar as he could reasonably be transplanted to a harder edged story treatment, than the Hartnell era scripted/edited under Dennis Spooner served up.

Ooo, I think I'd want more of the straight actor of House and The Night Manager, making sure to keep the sardonic wit. I think that would be a great foil for 13 and he would be more than able to pull off even some of the camp that Alan Cumming brought as well, as shown by the unfairly maligned Tommorowland. All in all, I think he would be able to give both a interpretation that was both mature while being family friendly, charming and despicable, camp and serious etc. and I think actually one of the only current actors I can think of that can pull of that tightrope/balancing act/whatever metaphor one wishes, of acting. In regards to Graham Garden, I can't say I'm a fan of his interpretation of the Monk, as from what I've heard, he seems to be very under-developed Monk, however he definitely had/has potential for future appearances.

Lol, I mean he was a surprisingly nasty piece of work, but I don't know if I want the Monk to become an all out racist, so much as a self-obsessed tinkerer, who just rides on the pain of others to get further and doesn't really care who it is he hurts. But again Lol.

Sounds like a good vision for how Hugh Laurie could build upon the character, were this forum ever be mined for ideas (one could only hope). As for Graham Garden, I think you may be right. As a Goodies fan, I was pleased to hear his take, and tend to think towards his final late realisation of his misguided alliance with the Daleks demonstrating that he was out of his depth and not Evil, just a bit corrupt. In some ways it is reminiscent of Draco Malfoy in the final Harry Potter, where he realises what it means to be part of of Voldemort's cult.

I don't want so many returning villains to be honest. As mentioned above if they can do a Morbius/Greel/Solon then all the better.
OR
They investigate who stole the statue of liberty and replaced it with a weeping angel. (How was that thing not permalocked? It's not like it couldn't be seen)

Team him up with the Rosa racist (can't remember his name, even though he was so memorable... ) and develop him up a bit, and I think we could get a really nice Monk/companion-type relationship that would prove a challenge for 13

When I really really dislike a character (especially for extra and unintended reasons like I disliked this one) I remember them! But he won't return (I hope!) In my head-canon, Ryan shot him back about 65 million years and in a great bit of unexpected continuity he landed in 'Earthshock "Episode 5"'. And was dessert. " Excellent!"
Serious point, yes the Monk would be a splendid and so overdue returning TV villain, as long as they stayed true to the original Monk and his motives. Wanting to help History along and make things 'better' as he sees it, with few morals and less technique in reaching his ends, leaving a huge mess for the Doctor to sort out and explaining that helping is one thing, meddling is another. (Cue huge argument between them as to who does which!)

And you're free to think so, but wording things slightly more tactfully wouldn't go amiss. Frankly, given that most people offer some detail to their opinions/responses, simply saying "Awful idea" comes of as more than a little rude and dismissive to the other person.
