This is really tough because I like both stories a lot. The Five Doctors was actually my introduction to Doctors 1-4, as I'd only seen Five up to that point. It's a mad story and deliriously fun to watch. The Three Doctors can do more with its characters since it has less to service, and the chemistry between Two and Three is marvelous. However, The Five Doctors gets a little bit of an edge for me for how ambitious it is and how much it succeeds at.

That's a toughie.
The Bristol boys were always great at concept stories, taking an interesting idea and fleshing it out as deeply as they could. Understanding it. They do a good job in The Three Doctors of understanding the formulae of each Doctor's tenure. The Third Doctor leads the investigative charge, the Second Doctor hosts a base-under-siege and, in a rather cruel bit of irony, the First Doctor is absent for large parts of the story, but crucial for its progression. That's incredible. I never thought of it that way at all. I definitely would say The Three Doctors over The Five Doctors - it's more the Second Doctor guest starring in a Third Doctor story so it feels more streamlined - and it means every character gets their own good interaction with him. It was my favourite serial when I watched the series through the first time and I'd probably still name it as such if asked. On the other hand, The Five Doctors doesn't have a whole lot of character crossover involved - the Second Doctor and Third Doctor barely meet anyone other than their designated companion until the final scene, Susan's interactions with the Fifth Doctor really aren't as satisfying as they should be (and he barely even talks to Sarah!) All in all, I think The Five Doctors is that very rare type of classic Doctor Who story - one that should be a little longer. i think that a good point five seems rushed and they should have add another monster a Third Doctor 1

this is a subjective perspective, rather than any attempt to say which is objectively the better story, but IMHO ...
The 5 Drs because this was what piqued my interest in Dr who and led to me becoming a fan. Prior to that I was aware of the show, but had no especial interest in it.

Just to clarify: The Three Doctors was NEVER intended to be an anniversary story, the timing of the story being completely accidental.
In terms of multi-Doctor stories, there both very dear to me, but very different animals. The Three Doctors is all about the prepice of the unknown, the impossible and The Doctor meeting his past selves is VERY much apart of that. The Five Doctors, by contrast, is an out and out celebration, of twenty impossible years of Doctor Who, so perfect that neither Moffatt or Big Finish have ever really sought to emulate it.

That's simply not true, Michael. If anything it's the reverse. It was always intended as the tenth anniversary story but didn't air at the actual anniversary (instead airing a handful of weeks after the ninth anniversary so it could launch the tenth season). Barry Letts said MANY times that people were always suggesting a multi-Doctor story to him and he eventually decided it would be the perfect way to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the show and commissioned it.

No, it was never intended to air on the anniversary itself but was absolutely intended to be an anniversary year special story.

To be fair, you want to leave somethings in the ether, even though Big Finish would go there successfully thirty-two years later. As for Sarah, her time had passed. For me, anymore then ninety minutes would have been overkill.

Slightly off topic, but I don't think there's EVER been a better anniversary special that has ever encaspulated a show (or really any bit of pop culture, really) then The Day of The Doctor, warts and all.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I'd agree with the caveat that The Five Doctors is not ever considered as a comparison because what it achieved with a 1983 budget was phenomenal. But DOTD is possibly the biggest love letter to a pop culture institution ever written, outside of T5D.

Aye, probably the best love letter to Doctor Who in any media, especially in regards to anniversary stories.

I know I come completely out of left field, but my favorite of these Classic series Doctor- meet- ups has to be the Two Doctors. I just absolutely adore it. It is completely non-sensical, and the whole crew defintely knows this, but it is a pure joy watching everybody having sooo much fun and just rolling with and and enjoying themselves. The positive vibes are so infectious, it always makes me smile.
That said, I get a very similar vibe from the Five-ish Doctors. That was really amazing, too.
For some reason, however, I cannot really get into the 3 or the 5 Doctors. I tried. Maybe because I miss the nostalgia connection to it?

But for some reason I immediately fell in love with the 2 Doctors.
And I like both Troughton and Colin... that certainly helped.

As for the two Doctors, I really didn't like that one. Didn't like the androgums, didn't like that Pat was sidelined for almost the whole story either.
I'm in no rush to revisit it anytime soon. Robert Holmes' nadir IMO.

Haha, that is classic (for my weird taste)- I just loved the Androgums. They totally fit into the whole non-sensical story. They are such a one-dimensional villain, it even gets lampshaded several times by the racism and contempt the Doctor (!!) shows towards them. This is why I love it- because EVERYBODY is aware of the bad script and everybody just rolls with it.
I just never did take it seriously and then it is a blast.
On a different note- I actually think if they made the Androgums a serious villain and not played for laughs, they might be great and really scary. I even thought the cannibal guy in "It takes you away" could have been an Androgum...
