I understand this release is getting a lot of praise and I'm happy other people are enjoying this, but I am just hugely disappointed. {Spoiler} The only reason I was looking forward to this was because it was advertised as Ace and the Doctor working against one another, Ace was finally putting an end to the Doctor's emotional manipulations but this doesn't happen. There is no resolution to Ace's story arc other than a tacked-on scene at the end which barely makes sense in context and feels like it was added because someone at Big Finish thought "if we advertise this as a big conclusion for the 7th Doctor and Ace and then we do nothing with that, people are going to be annoyed." And I don't understand why there was so much marketing for Ace in this when there wasn't for An Alien Werewolf in London because, again, nothing is done with Ace's character arc here. ETA: Just want to make it clear that the story itself isn't bad, it's not brilliant, but it's not bad. My main issue is with the way the advertising was handled.

Not terribly interested in this as I've found the one-line description of the Eleven to be far more interesting than the actual execution. However, I was still curious to gauge the reaction as the older Ace angle is intriguing. Peeked at the spoilers and yeah...at least it was cool to see her on the cover.

I think it will always be difficult to resolves Aces story and time line as its a total mess...

Yeah, I was clearly expecting too much, based on Doom Coalition and Ravenous which I love. It wasn't bad by any means, but I hoped it would be so much better.

the handling of Ace was a cop out. I wonder what they are planning to do with her- will she get her own resolution box set? Or might it be resolved in some future Time War release? Or, and this is a thought that spontaneous jumped into my head... Sophie Aldred's Ace book. Coming out soon. The one where she meets 13. Would make sense. So Dark Universe is maybe just a huge prequel and advertising for the new book...

Having had another listen, I don’t think the story is bad at all. I’m disappointed because this should have been an event, it’s the Doctor and Ace reuniting! But it was just a bog standard main range story. This had potential to be so much bigger. Like I say, it’s not a bad story, by it if you’re looking for main range run around, you could certainly do worse, but don’t expect any more than that. It’s 32 hours of Doom Coalition and Ravenous essentially squeezed into 2 hours.

I have this but haven't listened to it yet. Kind of disappointed reading the opinions on this thread, although I'll obviously make up my own mind once I hear it

Wow. There are people who don’t subscribe to the Main Range. Who knew? I used to. Not anymore.

It's releases like this that will make me glad if they do split the MR in to three separate ranges, so I can avoid yet more tiresome Seventh Doctor and Ace adventures that promise so much but deliver little. I can just subscribe to Six, buy the best of Five and ignore Seven.
I was very disappointed listening to Dark Universe, it was a poor story that just didn't hold my interest. So this underwhelming release only gets a 1/5 rating from me. (Even though there's no actual poll.)

Of all the things mentioned in this thread, I'm genuinely surprised that no one's mentioned the extended opening titles music. I don't know about anyone else, but I was properly startled when the music kept going. Just when you think you know something it goes and takes you unawares!
As for the story itself, I'm in the "it could have been so much more" boat. I'd guessed within about five minutes what the Ace 'twist' on the situation would be, and from that point the story didn't really have anything up its sleeve. And as pointed out above, we've basically seen the same story twice before from two different angles in the last 3 months, so it has even less impact because of that. If I'm honest though, I never had any expectation that this one was going to floor me, so I'm not especially disappointed. I'll just put it next to the majority of Big Finish output - good overall, but not something that really stands out from the crowd.

So I can take my time getting around to this then...nae rush as they say. I was expecting kind of EPIC and cryptic reviews that would intrigue me...and unlike many am a BIG Fan of Sylvester and Ace and Definitely 11. If they do a Time Scaphe Alpha 9 😉 I hope they take their time with it

I should point out that I haven't got this release, so I could be missing out on the greatest thing ever written (got next month's on preorder though). My 'super sub' ran out a few weeks ago, and there is so much stuff being released by BF, that I'll be cherry-picking for a while from now on.
But I would say that Sylvester is a favourite of mine, and it's a shame his stories are currently not up to standard of his co-Doctors in the monthly range. I can't see why this is.
I've enjoyed Monsters of Gokroth, Red Planets, Muse of Fire and before that, Fiesta of the Damned. It's great to have enjoyed them, but that's four releases in the past four years. I'm not bothered about bringing back Ace again and making that the story, or another fantastical universe-ending plan. I'd just like to see The Seventh Doctor get what he deserves - good, exciting stories like other Doctors.

Well, this IS a good and exciting story. Please do not get me wrong. It is just not the event that was advertised.

We should have known As it would have been a four cd set lol But hey kudos to them for NOT doing that and lets be honest they could have. They have kept their integrity as far as I am concerned.

I am seeing the opposite side of the coin. For a massive universe threatening story such as this, it should have gotten the attention, cast, production values and love the box sets get. Now when I look at it you can really see the difference and it feels like competing with a Renault Twingo against some fancy race cars.
It really appears what other people have feared and the Main Range is now playing third fiddle to the event releases.
Which is a bit sad, because this could have been SO. MUCH. MORE. than just a purely good MR release.

Dunno if I would say that about the Main Range, I look to the Main Range for fun stories & adventures. I hope they keep the end of the universe blah blah blah stuff to box sets.

Yes I don’t know what the solution is? But what maybe a blah kind of story to many may be the one that entices someone to buy their first Bf. Stop writing Universe destroying scenarios...Gallifrey did it Romana-The Destroyer of Worlds bloody hell come on just a good woman fighting bad odds works for me lolIts interesting as I was just reflecting on the recent River release that she really doesn’t need those kind of stories and neither does The Doctor(well not always 😎🤪😉)

Small scale stories which was more about the people than the latest disaster. I find all the end of the universe stuff overdone.

You could do an entire story for example featuring the Doctor and the Master/Rani/Monk/Eleven stuck in a room and just talking. It would take a particularly daring and talented writer to pull it off but it could truly be something special. Think ‘Masterplan’ from one of the Dark Eyes boxset as an example but just the two of them.

Put the Doctor in a straight forward Murder Mystery-and avoid Daleks 😉 or a group of Daleks on a ship where one of them murders the other lol Sure bring Back the Ravenous (i did enjoy them but don’t give them any more powers than they already have just let them munch their way through one of the Time Lords ancestral homes on a Stormy weekend on the planet)
