Yes, it is Alice's - very like her best comic covers for Titan. I don't see any US links so far. I don't think the States gets anywhere near as many steelbooks as the UK does in general. I love her doctor portraits. (I have several on my wall, war to 11)
Now I need to remember if UK and US share a region for blu-ray.
They dont sadly. The whole thing with Halloween 6 : Producers Cut being region locked to the states, answers that sadly

Series 8 was region free, as have been quite a lot of other Who releases.

Having ordered the standard edition bluray from the BBC Shop, I've now cancelled since they're making 2,000 steelbooks with this gorgeous artwork picked by Peter Capaldi: It's surprising there's only 2000. This steelbook is going to sell quickly.

I never said I disapproved of it being limited to 2000, only that I was surprised given the show's popularity. I was expecting maybe 5000 but 2000 is better because it increases the value it will be worth years into the future.

I'm wondering if this will be the start of a new line, with Amazon offering more steelbooks based on previous new series series and Zavvi DVD steelbooks of not-Spearhead (because that's got a Bluray steelbook) classic series releases.

I guess the sales will decide it. They'll only keep doing em as long as they're profitable. Would you shell out for the limited edition steelbook of Timelash?

Wouldn't bother with a limited edition steelbook of Dimensions In Time though.

There's a big collector market for bluray steels, I can't see them doing it for DVDs. There's a reason they did Spearhead - it's the only classic bluray there is.
What I think is possible is Series 1-8 to be re-released in steelbooks. They've just done that with Sherlock and Breaking Bad last year.

It would be a good idea if they do, probably with similar artwork to that on the series 9 one.

Mine arrived today, and it looks gorgeous. Included is a booklet 'Series 9 Facts', with a striking cover very much in the spirit of - well, a direct enhanced copy really - of the Chris Achilleos-drawn 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' original novelisation. There are some great pictures also of Peter Capaldi trying to out-gurn Davros - not an easy task.
It all looks great, it does The Doctor proud, and I cannot wait to get stuck in!

Your comment makes me wonder if they'd ever consider doing Target-style novelisations of new series episodes. I could imagine Day of the Doctor and Blink would sell quite well.

My steelbook version of series 9 came today. I was surprised to find Amazon do deliveries on a Sunday.
