My copy arrived today. I thought this boxset was kind of... lazy. Generic, bland promo photo as the cover art, and generic episode stills as the disc images. And I have to question where the logic was when someone thought to put each episode of the Dalek opener on two separate discs. In fact, with the bluray version, they could have used a lot less discs, I'm not sure why they decided to stretch it over 6 discs.
Also the fact that the actual box is a booklet and not the usual bluray cases sets my OCD, because now it looks out of place next to the previous series.

I think it looks great, the imagery and use of photographs is very effective (I haven't seen the Capaldi/Davros pics before). Is it really a problem to have different episodes of the same story on different discs? Surely moving to the DVD player and swapping discs isn't that much of a big deal? The extras are wonderful (at least, the ones I have seen), and it's great to be reminded how brilliant series 9 of Doctor Who is. Of course, there will come a time when Doctor Who will not be on BBC TV at all. ( BBC Shop is closing down at the end of March) That might put some of these complaints into perspective.

Am I correct in thinking the "Previously..." recap in The Witch's Familiar is actually different to broadcast? It's been a while admittedly.

The steelbook was well, well worth the extra couple of quid. It' just absolutely stunning in person. Alice is an amazing artist, as if we didn't know that from her Titan work.
There's a fun little booklet too, with fun-facts about each ep. Nothing substantial but designed like an old Target.
Only slight grumble is that the discs are stacked in two larger spindles holding three rather than using a fliptray as a lot of other TV series steels do. However, with bluray being much, much more durable than DVD this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I was expecting a fliptray; this disc-stacking method just makes some of the discs very hard to get to without taking them all out.

Obviously neither the standard release or the steelbook will match the previous releases? But which do folk think would look better next to the others?

Obviously neither the standard release or the steelbook will match the previous releases? But which do folk think would look better next to the others? As you hint, they've never matched up anyway - I picked up the Series 1-7 bluray set on its release day and 1-4 were all standard boxes wheras the Matt Smith ones were fatboxes. Then I got the 50th anniversary set that looks like nothing before or since. Then Series 8 went to a fatbox in a slipcase....it's all over the shop. Add the Cushing movies and Spearhead...things get really out there The steel looks stunning though. Just gorgeous. It's got a nice defined spine too, in black so fits well with Series 8. If you want a fatter box the size of the Smith or previous Capaldi set, go for the standard but even the packaging of that isn't the same. It's got clear full sized plastic trays rather than Series 8 which had more regular blue cliptrays. Steel wins for me though. Beautiful.

Couple of wee quality control slip ups, purely cosmetic: 1. The backing card says that the San Diego panel is from Comic-Con 2016. Bit odd since that isn't till this July 2. The booklet lists Julian Bleach as being a guest star in Series 1 of Torchwood when, as we know, Out Of The Rain was Series 2.
