This boxset only has two stories in it, because one's a two-parter - but that means the Brigadier in one, and _______ in the other. Wild hopes/guesses below: - Vastra, in a story that includes a flashback of them meeting for the first time. - Jamie - Tegan - Ian (if Russell's still interested in acting) - Polly
But it's probably just Leela, Nyssa, Ace or Jo, innit? xD

I’d honestly love to hear from Madame Vastra and Jamie again. Especially the latter as it feels like such a long time since we’ve heard from Frazer Hines.
Mind you, it’s probably going to be Leela again isn’t it?

I have a feeling the old friends is just referring to the doctor and the brigadier, as in “those two are old friends” much like how even though set three is called “lost warriors” i doubt all three stories will feature a warrior that has been lost

Is there definitely a two-parter in this set? I know Nick said on the podcast that after Ravagers later sets would be a mix of one- or two-parters, but I don't think it's been said for sure. I doubt it's going to be as straightforward as "The Doctor meets Ace/Leela/Nyssa/Vastra" though, the 9DAs have shied away from that sort of thing and it doesn't seem likely they'd have more than one in a set.

I have no idea where it was said - I'll have a little dig through the forum after I hit "post" - but I think there was a definite "Box 4 has a two-parter" at one point. (EDIT: Still no idea, all I could find was folks stating it like it was common knowledge! I guess it's possible that two of the Box 3 stories are linked??)

Briggs said on a podcast at one point, in response to a question about whether all the boxsets would be three-parters like Ravagers, "no, the rest of them will be one-part stories - but there might be a two-parter in there somewhere", which implies that there will be a two part story, and, since none has been announced yet, that it'll be in Old Friends. I can see them doing something fairly big to finish the series, given that they won't have known when they recorded it that Eccleston would want to do more.

It’s possible theres more than one returning element but i would call caution on assuming there will be more than one returning character, i feel if there was we would know. Time will soon tell though

Time will soon tell though Now that you mention it, the Doctor was always bumping into old friends we the audience had never seen before in the Classic series so it could be an example of that as well.

Hmm friends plural huh.
I kinda hope it’s just a theme for the set and the Brig is the only literal old friend in it. Keep the continuity/returns nice and low in this range please.

That's possible as well! Or just that "old friends" is the theme of the non-Brigadier story...

Regardless of whether Nine runs into other old friends beyond the Brig, I'm excited for those two to meet up again and see what sparks fly.

One thing to consider is depending on his chronology The brigadier could be in his UNIT Days so it might also be a chance of 9 meeting The Master as technically the doctor and the master are old friends
Personally I’d rather for the older sir Alistair meeting 9

I think Ian would be perfect. Ian knows about the Time War, he seems to hold the Doctor and more importantly rhe idea of the Doctor in high regard, and …. Well it’s WILLIAM RUSSELL.

Sadly i think William Russel is retired so if Ian was to make an appearance it would be Jamie Glover's Ian from The 1DAs

I wouldn’t be against Vastra appearing in this actually. It feels more natural than Leela, Nyssa or Ace and it’s less another “return” and more exploring some uncharted territory. It could be an origin story, it could be a nice exploration of the Doctor post-Time War, it could be both!
Old Friends doesn’t necessarily have to be old to the Doctor, it’s a subtitle for us as listeners.
