Congrats to last year's winner Nick, and now onto new business:
An all new thread offering writing advice, bouncing ideas and answering questions you may have about writing a Short Trip. Past winners and runners up, as always, are welcome to share. (Just to head off also, yes - I know nothing's been announced, but aside from no indication of the opp being axed, I think this is just a chance to flex creative muscles.)
Former producer Ian Atkins threw up some suggestions for what is looked for, and the winners thus far have borne it true (also, they're just good story pointers): 1) Story must be emotionally moving. Preferably with some type of extra 'kick' at the end to really hit it home i.e. the daughter in Forever Fallen. 2) Intimate over epic, and character driven. A chance to really get inside someone's head, and it doesn't have to be the Doctor or companion. 3) Optimistic. Not sappy, but something to do with overcoming. 4) Ideally, not a comedy. The implication being it's not appropriate for a memorial competition, and the writer comes off as not taking the opportunity seriously. 5) Proof read/read aloud so nothing is unintelligible. 6) Death, while effective, were a really common theme in submissions, and made reading them more emotionally taxing, given the contest's origins. 7) Try to restrain down to 1, 2 max. submissions per writer.

Best of luck to everybody entering.
BF writer Max Kashevsky (Curtis) said this on Twitter: My advice is, try to find the story that only you can tell. Maybe you're drawing on some lovely or traumatic personal experience. Maybe you've got a cool special interest. Maybe you've just got a flair for certain kinds of stories: big heart, bigger drama, the *biggest* comedy.

Notably this time round they’ve limited the Doctors available to the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, or Eighth.
Good luck anyone entering from here.

So it seems that they are purposely not including Doctors that have had a Paul Spragg short before. A bit peeved since I had a fun idea for the Ninth Doc, but I like a challenge.

As always, I won't repost a lot of advice/tips from previous years on this thread, save for particular highlights. If you want those, just hop back to the prior threads. Tons of extra tricks you can learn therein from members and pros alike.

I'll say that this forum was an absolute goldmine when I was writing my entry in 2022, so be sure to check out the past threads and make sure you listen to -- or at least read the scripts for -- all of the previous entries.
Good luck!

Good luck to all those that enter. I hope to get something different to the pattern of emotional character piece where there’s some catch to the lead character and the Doctor flits in and out of their life. There must be so much more submitted to the opportunity than that description that hopefully gets a fair crack of the whip.

I did not expect Martin in the jury given his small number of BF credits (although I really enjoyed his Kamelion script) but it's nice to see new faces. Was he involved in more BF productions?
