That was the weirdest bit of Who since Kinda.
Naturally I loved it.

One of the things about being alive for a lot of years is I can bore people by saying things like 'This reminded me a little of episode1 of The Wheel in Space.' Whereas that was dark, cramped and spooky, this was, of course, bright, huge and very CGI. Sign of the times. Doctor Who has never looked so good, one might say, although ... I do miss the comparative intimacy of a small studio at the BBC. Some people are never happy, are they? And yet, within all the bigness of it all, there's a small, fascinating plot, which I like. Shades of Midnight from time to time, I thought. Ooh, and a Timeless Child reference too. Good, good.
I liked this more than The Star Beast. It seemed as if everyone had settled down a bit. Even the omni-present Murray Gold wasn't quite so intrusive. I liked the way things took a long time to develop. You could well believe the Doctor had travelled to the edge of creation (once again) and the sense of nothingness was beautifully done, and pretty creepy. The dialogue was typically snappy and genuinely funny on occasion, delivered with near perfection by our two regulars.
Not such a crowd-pleaser as last week's episode - I can see it being quite divisive actually - and I'm very happy with that. And the whole thing featuring - for the main part - just David and Catherine. What a twosome. And how lovely to see Mr Cribbins. Next week's episode looks very good, but I'll take some time to process the last 60 minutes first.
On the whole, rather wonderful, with weirdness turned up to 11! Watching this made me happier than I've been in a while about what has become known as RTD2.
I still think the new theme music is overblown cobblers though!

Full marks from me too. Absolutely brilliant. The kind of utterly bonkers episode I just adore. It reminded me of the kind of style early Big Finish excelled at with two handers.

And so it turns out that all the secrecy wasn’t to hide any big returns or fan service, but to give us an episode where we have no idea what is going on, and surprise and scare us all the better for it. It’s one hell of a move, and while I’m sure some might be disappointed, I’m quite happy with it myself. I adored the story and directing from Tom Kingsley really ratcheted the creepiness and weirdness. Tennant plays the years between 10 and 14 so incredibly well. I can tell that everything has happened for him, and the scenes dealing with the Flux is especially great. I loved seeing Nathaniel Curtis as Issac Newton, and I feel like the whole Mavity business will play into next episode, or a future one at least.
P.S. I'm not crying at those final minutes, someone just chopped up some gigantic onions right under my nose!!

Weird for the sake of being weird.
Tate and Tennant sell it, CGI back to being variable, highlights were RTDs current take on the Timeless Child and Flux, pre credit scene risky but well done, and the final 5 minutes and the Trailer hit perfect.

I said upthread I wonder if this would be Midnight vibes, and that's certainly the closest comparison, I think. With quite a bit Scherzo for us BF fans. But it's not as good as Midnight or Scherzo. Could add loads more too - a bit of Flatline and some Turn Left in that it's set up the big finale - superstation at the edge of the Universe opening up reality to The Toymaker, like Bad Wolf returning when universes bled into each other. Salt from Fendahl..then Solaris vibes if we want to add non-Who elements. Even Silent Running. It looked lovely with faultless doubles and beautiful design, had some gorgeous Murray Gold music and what a joy to see that one Bernard Cribbins scene. Yet, I'm not sure enough happens in it. I don't mean we didn't get...The Rani back, just that it felt like a solid mid-season ep but not much more. It was like Oxygen or 42. A spacey sci-fi story and there's nothing wrong with that at all, just.. we're now 2/3rds done with this era we're now heading to the big RTD kitchen sink finale but I can't help but feel there could have been a bit more meat on the bones of that story. Or if, given there's only 3, that's a story that needed to be a third of the whole era. The Isaac Newton opening fell completely flat for me, that was the only bit I disliked despite Nathaniel Curtis being in Who which is fab. Olly Alexander next please! It's A Sin cameos or not though - the "mavity" joke fell flat for me in a really cringe-y fashion. I'm just not sure how "special" that special was. Yet I loved the vindication of Flux and the Timeless Child. RTD steadfastly not ignoring the last decade especially as it lets us BRING BACK JO MARTIN! Tennant's never been my fave Doctor, and RTD has never been my fave showrunner so I knew this run - and the ones upcoming may be hit and miss for me subjectively but others here didn't like Capaldi and Moffat and that felt like Who made just for me, so swings and roundabouts. But please....SUSAN NEXT WEEK!

Susan.Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Mate, any chance you can give it a rest for once in your life? For a guy who moans about The 12th Doctor not being good or kind a lot, you could certainly use those virtues yourself.

I thought that was a serious stinker. Wonderful production values though. The ship was superbly designed.

No in-vision commentary for this one?
Anyway, it was brilliant. Even Murray Gold had toned it down a bit. Reminiscent of Midnight & It Takes You Away at times. Great acting, a really fun intriguing plot. Not something we need every week but bodes well for season 1.

Think I prefer "Muppets from Space" on Film Four.

Quite apart from everything else, Newton was an anti-social obssessed paranoid nerd. If Doctor Who had been around in the seventeenth century, he would have been a fan on the internet. And you *know* what kind of fan I mean. The kind who finds Outpost Gallifrey staid and mainstream. And, yet, RTD has him portrayed as a Byronic hearththrob. Has he never heard of his illustrious predecessor's prediliction for 'doable barkers' ?

Absolutely. I knew him very well, being several hundred years old. Please dismiss any suggestion I might have read about him in books or anything.
