Oh No It Isn't
Decided to take a break from the Main Range and revisit the first season of Benny (which is about all I've got) before I get too far ahead of myself. I don't like this. I didn't like it the first time, either.
I think this makes a very poor introduction to the character. In my opinion, it is important for a series to establish within the first story what the show is going to be like on a regular basis and how the characters act. Wacky stories like this are fine - I'm a big Farscape fan - but they're best left until a point where the audience knows what the baseline is. Otherwise, it's very jarring to be thrown headfirst into total nonsense. Yes, Benny can be mad but it's not usually this mad. Maybe Big Finish figured that anyone buying this release would already know Benny, but I still don't think it's the right way to introduce not only the series but Big Finish as a whole. Surely something well-written but not totally off in la-la land would have been better?
Secondly, I think there's a cultural disconnect here. I'm not British. I have no background or experience with panto. I am aware of it, but I don't get it. So in an already disorienting story, I'm also missing some context, here. And frankly I don't like the panto elements. I find them mostly rather annoying.
There are some positives. Lisa Bowerman is perfect and always has been. Nick Courtney is rather easy on the ear as well. I wish that darn cat had continued to speak going forward! I admit to being amused at some of the ruder jokes and characters (Dame Candy) and Benny's inability to swear in panto land. And on the technical side, it's quite impressive for a first effort. Overall though, this thing just doesn't agree with me.

I admit to being amused at some of the ruder jokes and characters (Dame Candy) and Benny's inability to swear in panto land. And on the technical side, it's quite impressive for a first effort. Overall though, this thing just doesn't agree with me. Although it's series 1 episode 1 of the Big Finish range of Benny stories, it doesn't really introduce the character per se because the book (of the same name) that the story is adapted from is not an introductory story of the character. Not helpful for you, I know. Benny is first introduced as a character in the Seventh Doctor Virgin New Adventure book called Love and War, which Big Finish has also done as an audio story. Thereafter, she became a companion of the Seventh Doctor in subsequent Virgin New Adventure books, several of which Big Finish has adapted to audio (one of them, All-Consuming Fire is $2.99 on download this month); check the BF Novel Adaptations to see the others.
The book called Oh No It Isn't! started the Benny range of Virgin New Adventures after Virgin lost the rights to Doctor Who. It was written for readers who already knew the character, so it doesn't do a lot to introduce Benny, but that's the story Big Finish started with when they started doing audio stories. Big Finish adapted several other Virgin New Adventure Benny stories for series one of the Benny CDs before branching out and writing their own new stories. A couple of the series one BF audio stories, Birthright and Just War, were originally Seventh Doctor Virgin New Adventure books, but Big Finish adapted them as Benny stories without the Doctor, as Big Finish did not yet have the license to do Doctor Who.
And that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about Benny. My first Benny story was Love and War. (Well, actually, my first Benny story was the Short Trip Silver Lining, which was and is still available free on Soundcloud, but I didn't know who Benny was and it didn't mean much to me.) I heard Love and War as a Big Finish audio story and I got interested in the character from that and then hunted down and read every Doctor Who Virgin New Adventure, including the ones with Benny and the Doctor, before starting on the Benny audio stories. Then I hunted down and read all the Benny New Adventures. (I will say that the Benny books are of variable quality, some very good and some so so.) I wasn't really familiar with panto, either, but I did know a little bit about the character. Even so, the book (and the audio) can be a bit hard to follow at times. But I will say that Nicholas Courtney was hilarious as Wolsey the cat.

Well ELA has pretty much summed up the Oh No IT isn’t- I will say i knew Benny briefly.I was very much a snobby if it wasn’t on the Telly it wasn’t Canon type of guy.I had a few brief forays into the New Adventures. But now more important-FARSCAPE on audio-i would certainly buy to hear that gang knock a few out!!!

The Third Doctor Adventures-back on home soil in my own bed. Holidays are brilliant but theres something about arriving back and having the first night in your own bed.
I really cannot believe we are now on the fifth volume of these adventures and such an aural delight.Jon Culshaw brigadier really just is spot on.Tim Treloar just gets better and better as the 3rd Doctor.John Levene is so totally into it being added to the team. Its great to have this era so perfectly recreated.Add Liz Shaw to the mix and the recreations are a true Joy i am so glad they have not introduced the Master(at this point) or introduced him he seemed to be a DAILY threat in the show.I do see MISSY and the Third though. The BF team have taken the Vardans in all their audios and redeemed them as a true threat.
The real Glory has to go To Katy Manning she kept her Doctor alive to us fans and getting her to act opposite them again is one of the real pleasures of these sets and am sure she is instrumental behind the scenes in getting enthusiasm going in these audios. Cannot wait till they do a Prequel to Zaltys -as they are name checked in that story-Come on BF its up mr Adams horror street, the prequel.
Both these adventures are wonderful audio

The Outliers. Great story, very creepy atmosphere and I love the cave setting. The aliens were quite interesting, too. I also liked the resolution {Spoiler} in that we do not get a Silurian ending but a more ambiguous one where the jury is still out- understandable since there was a lot of death on both sides

Feeling slightly inspired by Polly and her early Main Range first-time listen thru, I'm revisiting 'Red Dawn'...another one I've never finished!
Tonight, either Shadow of the Scourge or The Apocalypse Element.

Jago & Litefoot series 4. Another very nice set of stories. (Seems I'm on a Jago and Litefoot kick. ) I enjoyed the addition of Professor Claudius Dark to the mix.

Tonight, either Shadow of the Scourge or The Apocalypse Element. I enjoy Red Dawn although many i know don’t and Scourge and Apocalypse are good tales. Since the Cds have arrived for 8th Doc Time war Vol.3 and The War master-Rage and Bernice-Buried Memories -they are getting their First Cd listen to.Mc Ganns time War is still in its original four individual Disc case format while the others remain shrunk.I do Miss individual covers though...but hell am saving Paper arent i? ”

More than I ever wanted to know about Benny. Thanks for the detailed summary. I was aware of Benny's past companion status going in, but beyond that nothing. So it was a very weird experience first time round! Like I said, I think BF just assumed anyone buying the CD had read the books already. I will definitely be checking out more. I'd been holding my breath the last couple years hoping for the download rights to be secured but alas.... Well ELA has pretty much summed up the Oh No IT isn’t- I will say i knew Benny briefly.I was very much a snobby if it wasn’t on the Telly it wasn’t Canon type of guy.I had a few brief forays into the New Adventures.
