Most recently I have listened to Flying Dutchman/Displaced
Flying Dutchman was mostly okay. It reminded me of 11th Doctor pirate episode. I liked the meta discussion between 7, Ace, and Hex of the DW trope “oh it’s aliens” that is typically the explanation for anything supernatural and the subversion of the typical solution at the end. Most of my criticism comes from that a lot of it is a forgettable runaround, however there is one major criticism I have with the subplot of Ace and Archie. While I do like the message they had, it was very very cringey the way it was played out. The dialogue in this subplot felt like a really cheesy very special episode of a bad sitcom to the point where I expected “Full House” music to start playing and for Ace to break the forth wall and say “ And knowing is half the battle”! Overall it was mostly forgettable story with an occasional clever touch here and there and a well meaning but slightly cringey subplot.
Displaced was amazing! I genuinely had chills throughout this story, especially when that creepy little song kept playing! I loved how they handled the themes of family and their relationship to nature, home and technology. It reminded me of a slightly more optimistic and bittersweet version of Home Truths. BF seems to have a lot of sentient house stories but this is definitely among the best up there with “Chimes of Midnight” and “Home Truths”!

Am saving for Edinburgh at night when i take my break as long as we dont go back into lockdown..it seems Displaced might be an ideal story when am walking its streets at night and the finale to The Omega factor

The Wishing Beast/The Vanity Box (Paul Magrs)
Coming from someone who is a great admirer of Paul Magrs’s Doctor Who work (I would highly recommend his Iris Wildthyme short stories) I’m not quite sure what to make of this one.
Always nice to hear Jean Marsh in anything and Baker/Langford make for a great (and extremely underrated) pairing but I don’t know. It’s hard to explain but if I can put it into words the story didn’t seem quite whimsical/dark enough to be a fairytale nor horrifying enough to be a ghost story. It’s not exactly the most detailed or analytical of observations I’ll grant you but it’s the only one I’ve got.
Thought the latter was a hoot though. Yes, perhaps the humour is a bit lowbrow in places but as a lover of the panto it hit the spot for me.

5th Doctor Main/Monthly Range #222 "The Contingency Club". Last night I snuck in the 1st cd of 5th Doctor Main/Monthly Range #137 "The Whispering Forest". Oh, hey, I'm listening to Zaltys for the first time and relistening to The Cradle of the Snake from the same trilogies. Neat. Wonderfully witty is Zaltys. I loved the central conceit of doing a group of stories that drew inspiration from 80s music videos. Talking of homages: the actress who plays Clarimonde, Niamh Cusack, the little nod from Tegan that she might be Zodin initially... It's a cute throwaway gag, but if there were ever a casting call to fit that cunning regalia, I think we'd do very well with Cusack in the role.

Am a definite fan of Zaltys and would enjoy the mentioned Jo Grant episodes

8th Doc Time War 4
(A sublime return for Terry Molloy and excellent getting back on a narrative track of the Time War)

Hope to continue with Time War 4 tonight. So far, this is fantastic- thanks to Terry Molloy Who is really rocking the boat here. I admit after the previous sets which left me a bit wanting, I had not expected much. However, this one definitely starts very strong. I am pleasantly surprised.

MR-5DA-The Demons of Red Lodge and other STORIES-multi authored
i think this is one of the better anthology collections it attempts a lot within the four half hour slots -brilliant ? No but always gets a relisten I will re-evaluate I just spent the last two hours really enjoying this more than I have, with my feet up the rain absolutely pissing down outside...it’s crept even higher in my estimation now it may not be brilliant but it’s damn clever and inventive I found myself wanting to revisit this less than a week later 😎

I've been listening to the "Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama" audio book that I got in my Star Wars Humble Bundle and loving every minute. And it makes me so happy to hear the Star Wars theme at the start and finish of every chapter. It's great isn't it? I remember it being broadcast here in the UK on Radio 1 - primarily a 'pop music' station - all those many years ago. Loved it then - love it now. It's a really thorough adaption, and very well played. Nice to have a couple of original cast members there too. I remember thinking the actress who played Princess Leia was particularly good. I should listen to this again sometime.
*
Sherlock Holmes -The Reification of Hans Gerber.
This is the least listened to BF Sherlock. It isn't the best, but it is still a whole heap of fun. It's always good to hear Terry Molloy and I had forgotten Dan Starkey was also in this. I love the attention to detail in the sound design on these Sherlock Holmes stories. Headphones on, you can really become transported to this foggy, bygone time. I am sad the releases are so infrequent - in fact, I wonder if we'll hear any more? There have been murmurings that have (so far) come to nothing.
