BF B7: The Liberator Chronicles Vol 1
My rebellion against the all-powerful backlog continues! Finally I've heard some BF B7 and it fully lived up to my expectations. I like the 'chronicles' format in the 'Doctor Who' range and it worked very well here too. Oh those familiar voices and characters from my TV past and very authentic scripts.
Favourite story of the set: 'The Turing Test'. Great story, perfect characterisations - and Paul Darrow is superb.

During my walk around town today, I finished off 'Masquerade' and, you know what? Whilst I will say that it could have been a couple of minutes shorter, I actually loved it more than I remembered! (Not that I thought it was bad or anything, I just don't think I was giving it my full attention). My only real 'complaint' about this story is more a slight problem that I have with the trilogy as a whole - {Spoiler} Whilst I did love Hannah's sacrifice/departure at the end, I just think that we could have, maybe, benefited from an additional story or two starring her between 'Tomb Ship' and this one, as, whilst I do like Hannah as a 'temporary' companion, she's actually only in 9 episodes (10 counting the 'cameo' at the end of Tomb Ship part 3) & I just sometimes feel that fleshing her out more (such as a story revolving around her religious organisation or just a conversation between her & Nyssa about her, admittedly-implied, homosexuality) and just having some more time around her, growing to fully like her, before the final punch hit...
It might just be me overthinking it slightly (and the fact that it's almost 1.30 in the morning & I haven't been the full recommend amount of sleep over the past few days), but I do sometimes think that, even with a story or two more, she really could have been something rather than just, to some extent, just 'being there'...

From Tom's birthday sale comes... Purgatory 12. A first-time listen all the way through, catching up from 2020.
I'm loving the atmosphere on this. The Paddy Kingsland-like chords are as evocative of the season as Dudley Simpson and the TARDIS dynamic feels distinctive from the later one we'd have with the Fifth Doctor. The little touch of grief from Adric, etching Varsh's name into the rock, and how he "should have held on" hit rather effectively. You know who he's talking about before the Doctor and Romana find it.

Completely agree. Unlike your good self, I never really liked her as a companion but as you said with just one extra story she really could have been fleshed out more. If only so as we as an audience had more of an attachment to her.

Completely agree. Unlike your good self, I never really liked her as a companion but as you said with just one extra story she really could have been fleshed out more. If only so as we as an audience had more of an attachment to her. I wouldn't say that I 'loved' her, but as 'temporary' companions go, fine, she's fine... Development & story wise, Brewster was initially in the same amount of stories (ignoring 'The Three Companions', of course) &, although a 'Your Mileage Might Vary' character, I just think he's a more rounded character, as he's the main focus of his first story (which I started listening to again before bed) and just feels more like a driving force within it. (I've only heard his Companion Chronicle trilogy once, but I think Oliver's the same with his first story?...). Hannah's fine in 'Moonflesh' (she has some good dialogue, we get to know about her background slightly & she has the b-plot focus in part 4 in 'helping the guy escape'), but it's sort of 'nulled' in 'Tomb Ship' in that we barely see her... There's nothing wrong with her trilogy as such, all three of them are at least decent-enough, but, as mentioned, I think she was hindered slightly by the trilogy-format, and even a supplementary Companion Chronicle (which I think was ending around the same time?) would have 'helped her out no end'...

Listening to the Third Doctor Adventures in preparation for the new set as well as the new Bluray. So with that, yesterday was Prisoners of the Lake.
Right off the bat, the range is so strong in its characters and story. And a lot of that comes down to how fantastic Tim Trelor is! Though he only got better, this first set’s performance is nothing to laugh at. It’s got all the hallmarks and characteristics of Pertwee’s Doctor, and you can totally imagine these being original tales.
Back when this was first released, I hadn’t watched or listened to much of Classic Who and the respective audios. That meant that the 3rd Doctor was uncharted territory. And boy what a way to start. So Trelor, for me, is very much the 3rd Doctor as Pertwee and in my eyes, is perfect casting.
And finally, one can’t talk about Prisoners of the Lake, and the second story, The Havoc of Empires, without talking about the narration. And you know what, I really enjoy it! I’m glad that future sets would be straight full-cast, but in these two stories, the blend between formats is excellently realized, with the action never stalling.
A wonderful start to the range, and one I should revisit more often.

MR: Masquerade. I'm easily led it seems, as soon as someone mentions a story or a character, I feel the need to give it a listen. Never finished this one, will try and rectify that today.
Edit: well I finished it. It is certainly well acted and the shift from powder-wig era France to a futuristic space station is highly intriguing, as are The Steam Roller Man and The Dead Man, but it is far too complicated (on a technobable level) to properly follow.
I enjoyed it, but it needs another listen or two at some point so i can try and understand it. 6 out of 10, and I quite like the trilogy as a whole.

Who knew I was a trend-setter? Well, just dont start babbling on about The Dark Flame, whatever you do. Well, now that you mention it, it has actually been 15-odd years since I last listened to it, so... I'm only (partially) kidding - Today I've been listening to 'The Haunting Of Thomas Brewster' (though I am now actually considering 'TDF' at somepoint after I've done done the full set)

MR: The Twilight Kingdom, which I listened to again this morning. I think I quite like both this one and The Land of the Dead because not a lot actually happens...so it can just be on in the background when I'm working, or when I'm in bed and bound to fall asleep somewhere in part 2.

Leviathan
This is the first Season 23 Lost Story that I really liked. It is very well paced, and uses the extended runtime to pivot the story into something totally different that Part 1 would suggest. Lots of little clues and questions are laid out early on. I didn't guess the twist, but I was thinking at least something along those lines. Admittedly, I find the mystery woods and the Herne more appealing than some of the later revelations, but that's not to say they're a let-down at all. I was particularly pleased with how Peri was written - this script gives the sense that she's been through a lot on her travels, and has grown as a person. The Doctor continues to be a nice blend of Season 22 bluster and Big Finish compassion. It's a shame this never made it to the screen in some form or another. It would have given the Sixth Doctor era a much-needed classic, I think. I don't have too much more to say about it for fear of spoilers. Very good! +1 bonus for featuring the Doctor swordfighting. {Spoiler} While the world being on a spaceship wasn't a huge shock (I was thinking a simulation or pocket dimension), I was very surprised that the Sentinels of the New Dawn were involved.
I have listened to the Companion Chronicle of the same name and I genuinely thought that was the first and last we heard of them. You learn something new every day.

So much for tackling the backlog on a DAILY basis....🤦♂️ Day 6 Dark Eyes 2- Time's Horizon (2.3) Dark Eyes 2 - Eyes Of The Master (2.4)"Once more unto the backlog, dear friends...once more..." Day 7 Today... Torchwood Soho : ParasiteBack in November I had intended to 'dive headfirst' into the final part of the Dracula trilogy, but circumstances prevented me from fully doing so (at the time it wasn't so much a graceful dive into the story, more an uncoordinated belly flop with arms flailing wildly). Since then it has sat in the backlog, waiting to be listened to. Day 8 Dracula's War

As part of my on/off marathon through the new series, I revisited 10DAs Volume 3. It’s a good set of stories that fits neatly into Series 4.
