That’s unfortunately very true. Trouble is M.R. James much like say Lewis Carroll or Enid Blyton is one of those historical figures who you feel like should have had an adventure or at least met the Doctor at one point but as you said, things have obviously changed a great deal since last year. I still believe that we should have historical stories with those people and yes we should have controversial history figures in Doctor who as it creates an interesting contrast to the Doctor and companions views surely with different outlooks there should be dialogue and a chance of thought provoking discussions I agree mostly. Lovecraft (which is where this started) was an extreme case, in every sense, and BF couldn't do a 'Lovecraft' story without tackling his racism, extraordinary even by the low standards of his time. It's part of what made his fiction what it is and Lovecraft fans have to face that. I've never liked his stories much anyway, so personally I'd have been just as happy for BF to ignore him completely, but as a non-fan that's easy for me to say.
But I do like 'celebrity historicals' and I would very quickly get tired of every historical story feeling duty-bound to moralise on our behalf from a modern perspective. That reported comment a few weeks ago about 'as the perception of history evolves' struck me as frankly Orwellian. We may not always be clear on what was historical fact or not, but if there is clear evidence about an event, that's it, fact. We've had more than enough "alternative facts" in recent times.
'History' wasn't like today and that's presumably why it makes good material for 'Doctor Who', we can't rewrite it, not one line and beyond the most obvious cases I wouldn't want it to be endlessly commented on or 'explained' in 'Doctor Who' either. Just tell us good stories; we love them too.
EDIT: I think I'm responsible for sending this thread way off-topic. Sorry!

I've seen BBC audiobooks, Baker's End, The Scarifyers and Paddington Bear pass by on this thread quite recently and they were all perfectly well behaved. Paddington even raised his hat; he always was a very well-mannered bear.

Nobody has yet pulled me up on it so I’ve just carried on. And yes, Paddington was a very well behaved bear.

Tbh the threads should probably just be merged anyways, 802 pages compared to 19, it doesn’t really justify having its own thread imo as theres so few posts on it anyways i doubt many, if any, would mind about the occasional paddington post

Hope this is the right thread. Don't want things descending into chaos
The Robots 3: Circuit Breaker by Guy Adams.
You know the score regarding my little reviews of The Robots. Yes, it's excellent; yes, the performances are exemplary and very real (here the wonderful Carolyn Seymour joins the cast). Unlike Poul and Toos from Set Two, I didn't find myself missing the Chenkas in this story. This is Guy Adams's first story for the range and he instantly 'gets' the world of Kaldor (ever expanding) and the characters. Poul's phobia is explored further, and this casts a shadow over events in the story.
After the next story, it'll be a long wait until June for Box Set 4. That's after the first lot of Chris Eccleston stories, and that seems ages away! Before then, I'll be popping back to the beginning of Set 1 again for a re-listen. This really is the most exceptional series.

Just finished listening to Space 1999 : Breakaway. I must say I've never watched the Space 1999 TV series (I don't think it's ever been broadcast here in France), but this is one of my favorite Nick Briggs scripts. A great introduction to a new range. Mark Bonnar is stellar in this.
Now, onto Space 1999 Volume 1 with The Siren Call.

I know what you mean, one day someone posts something on the wrong thread, and next thing you know the Black Guardian's posting MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! all over the forum and chaos has engulfed the Divergent Universe...

7th Doctor - New Adventures Vol 1 - Trial of a Time Machine
Excellent story. Lots to think about here - clever and well-scripted. McCoy is very good in this and the supporting cast are also excellent. Definitely one of the best releases for the 7th Doctor in a long, long while. Really enjoyed this.
Definitely need another New Adventures Box Set!

Definitely need another New Adventures Box Set! Agreed! I'd never read any of the VNAs so this style was all new territory for me and I thought it was excellent, stories which went to some different places and I liked Roz and Chris very much. A part of Seven's long and complex life I'd like to hear more from.
(No spoilers but I think they saved the best two stories for the second half of the set... )
