... I'm hoping the other stories from The Story So Far sets are an improvement, but lately I've found myself struggling to enjoy most of what I've been hearing, so I'm not holding my breath. Maybe after 6+ years of almost daily listening I'm starting to suffer a bit of burnout? I listened to The Lovecraft Invasion a couple of days ago though and actually really enjoyed it (bar a couple too many mentions of Lovecraft's racism in the first two episodes - the right balance was struck for the second half of the story). It could just be I've come across a(n admittedly huge) crop of stories that aren't really my thing over the last couple of months though. And there are so many upcoming releases in the next few months that I'm super keen to hear, so maybe things are about to turn around I don't know. Time will tell, I guess... The more we hear, the higher the bar is bound to be set I guess? Sometimes I like to try a complete change of genre for a while, just to shake things up a bit. Or a run of stories which sort of play on the same field, but under different rules. For example, around Christmas I enjoyed a run of M.R.James (as is a tradition for me) before delving into my very last "new" Jago & Litefoot, and then early this year (feeling a bit sad I'd completed my favourite range) I went off into the backlog of Baker Street with Holmes and Watson for a run of their early BF stories.
After all this Victoriana, I came back feeling just right for some 'Doctor Who', in time to tackle the multiple Masters and the end of Charley's arc in the MR.
Hope you find some listening gems in the months ahead.
You mentioning M.R. James has just reminded me. Where’s our M.R. James historical adventure Big Finish?!

The Fires of Vulcan. Something about Part 4 reminded me of modern times. Crisis after crisis where people say "I have nothing to fear!" Whether they pray to the right gods or think this whole thing will blow over...

It might have taken me about a week, but on Monday I (finally) finished 'The Fourth Wall'. Whilst I will say that I, of course, adored it, I don't know if it's a story I could quite listen to on a regular basis... As I was off from work yesterday, I listened to the 'Outbreak' boxset. Whoever said that Torchwood was unrealistic?

MR: Exotron - giving this one another chance.
Masks of Nyarlathotep - part 2 is finished, and I liked how the English accents sounded very Australia on some characters! Next, Cairo and Egypt in part 3.

And You Will Obey Me...
Loving this more on a second listen. A good story and well acted. Underrated gem this one.

The Robots 2 ... I'm hoping that the final story propels this range back into greatness.
... and it has! Set 2 has been good so far, but the third story Do No Harm is excellent. That is to say, it's my favourite - a friend of mine has assured that all the episodes so far have been equally great! This ticks all the right boxes for me - not a spectacular story by its very nature, but a slow-burning, intriguingly told tale that convincingly places robot 'culture' into a human world. Or, if you like, the other way around. Part of the charm is the robots voices themselves, and their emotionless drawl, even in moments of anxiety, is wonderfully eccentric, beautifully played, and occasionally genuinely funny (without the aid of David Kramer's comedy music!). Phrasing a question like a statement, and flatly announcing incidents of great weight is a wonderfully characterful/characterless way of indicating who the robots are, without the use of voice effects - and top marks to the actors for their excellent performances.
{Spoiler} Making a court case into an audio story must have been a very tricky thing to do, especially as a lot of moments rely on visual evidence. Sarah Grochala handles the challenge admirably and offers a terrific story, and a great way to end this second set.

Listened to the first story from Gallifrey Time War 4 ( Deception). Quite impressed with it and Richard Armitage is of course awesome. I think there might even have been a bit of subtle humor there. Agreed with number13 about the excellence of the sound design. Also listened to the first half of The Tribulations of Thadeus Nook. Tom still every bit on form, but I thought it was a bit light and skippy when it came to supporting characters until it occurred to me that it felt a lot like a Meddling Monk story, and then it suddenly sounded just perfect

4DAs 10.4 The Primeval Design
Another story which imo has the 'feel' of S16. Maybe this is the lost S16B... A mix of human drama, action and fairly wild fantasy and I enjoyed it.

Torchwood - Drive.
I'm forever banging on about how double-disc four-part stories are the best. Torchwood is the exception for some reason (as were the Dark Shadows single-disc releases). This is a perfect case. A really well constructed story featuring my favourite character that absolutely fits the hour-long running time. This is why I find Torchwood so successful on audio. The stories zip along beautifully.
Perhaps Doctor Who is the exception (for me). I find the classic Doctors are best served with longer stories, probably because that is how their TV adventures were presented.
Anyway, an hour spent in Tosh's company is an hour well spent.

The Robots 3.1 The Mystery of Sector 13 by Robert Whitelock.
Boxset 3 gets off to a cracking start with this story written by, and featuring, the extremely talented Robert Whitelock. Some truly funny dialogue at the start, unaccompanied by comedy music (I mention that every post don't I? I apologise), is so so much more effective without it. The timing between Nicola Walker and Claire Rushbrook is perfect. Kaldor City has, by this time, become a fully-rounded world and there's nothing not to love. Louise Jameson, who directed, heaps praise on the script and it's hard to disagree with anything she says. A very creepy Jon Culshaw makes an appearance once again here, and he's very good as Sorkov, a truly mysterious character. I didn't have the cast list to hand and couldn't quite place the voice. Was it David Warner? Surely not David Bailie? Truly, Jon Culshaw is becoming a real coup for Big Finish. Love it to bits.

You mentioning M.R. James has just reminded me. Where’s our M.R. James historical adventure Big Finish?! I would love one! (Which goes without saying, given my username and all. ) Though I'd prefer a pseudo-historical, partly because I really like them and partly because I have a halfway-OK ( I think! ) and very Jamesian idea for a Third Doctor and Jo pseudo-historical with James.
The only 'problem' is, after the Lovecraft debacle last year and the subsequent edict about historical stories we heard about, I wonder if any historical figure of note would meet the grade? Very, very few historical characters would meet today's requirements if we knew everything about them and what they thought. Very few indeed.
For example, M.R.James, while a renowned academic and well-liked by his contemporaries & students at King's and in later life popular with his pupils at Eton too, was definitely on the wrong side of the debate about allowing women to work for university degrees - and this was even after women students had been admitted to the university. It seems incredible now there could ever have been such a debate, but there was, and it was quite academically fierce and he was opposed. Would that be enough to get him retrospectively cancelled? At this distance in time I don't think it should be, and a few years ago it wouldn't have been, but now I think it might.
So I'm not holding out much hope of a BF James story, sadly.

So I'm not holding out much hope of a BF James story, sadly. That’s unfortunately very true. Trouble is M.R. James much like say Lewis Carroll or Enid Blyton is one of those historical figures who you feel like should have had an adventure or at least met the Doctor at one point but as you said, things have obviously changed a great deal since last year.

I still believe that we should have historical stories with those people and yes we should have controversial history figures in Doctor who as it creates an interesting contrast to the Doctor and companions views surely with different outlooks there should be dialogue and a chance of thought provoking discussions
