The epic main range commerative relisten always inspires me to listen to stuff again, and despite hearing this one quite recently I'm listening to Nocturne again.

The Council of Nicaea (Caroline Symcox)
A great pure historical. But I do wonder whether Big Finish would ever attempt something like this nowadays or whether it is just another example of Big Finish’s riskier early days.

Survivors - Robert.
In which one of the characters is given an episode for his backstory. Jane Slavin's story is uniquely funny, frightening, dramatic and tragic, all in equal measure. It might be my favourite episode from the entire run (so far).

The Cannibalists (Jonathan Morris)
Always great to see (or in this case hear) Phil Davis in anything. And he’s clearly having a lot of fun chewing the scenery.

A story with an unconventional format for both Blake's 7 and The Liberator Chronicles. Rather than following on directly from one another, the first two parts overlap. They provide two different perspectives of the same events. Halfway through at the moment, I'm enjoying it immensely.

The Whispering Forest (Stephen Cole) Thought I’d give this another go. But it’s just so dull. So very dull. I agree, unfortunately (I always like to be positive). I listened to it on BBC Radio way back and it managed to by stagey and sterile in spite of the opportunities Audio provided to get out of the studio bound foliage and RADA ensemble cast. It felt more reminiscent of an old 80's World Distributors Annual story at times. One of those bought as it was part of a trilogy and as part of the MR CD collection, rather than any chance of a re-listen.

It’s really odd because Stephen Cole usually comes up with some real corkers when it comes to story ideas. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to know what to do with this one. Oh well, I guess everyone has their off days.

As I’m currently working through The Mutation of Time audiobook, I revisited The Sontarans in the appropriate gap. It does well in fitting into the time period and “introduces” the Sontarans nicely, with a well characterised Commander. I did think Starkey’s delivery was a little monotone at times, but other than that good all round.

Main/Monthly Range #258 5th Doctor "Warzone/Conversion". Wow. There you go.. Nice emotional heart wrenching ending. I must say the music of this story was great. Reminded me a bit of "Tron"..

I love that one. Davison can really go to town with his emotions here. Looking forward to the box set which will conclude the arc.

Blake's 7: Jenna's Story.
I find it tough to pick and choose particular favourite characters in a series. What can make or break a character are the people around them as much as who they are in isolation. The tricksters, fraudsters, killers, terrorists, rebels... and smugglers. If I had to choose, though, I'd say I have a soft spot for Jenna. She was the one who came up with the name Liberator and this exchange on the hijacked London said quite a lot:
AVON: "Wake up, Blake! You may not be tranquilised any longer, but you're still dreaming. JENNA: "Maybe some dreams are worth having." AVON: "You don't really believe that." JENNA: "No, but I'd like to."
Steve Lyons has this unerring ability to create an entire social dynamic in almost two lines of description: Someone, somewhere had swiped her thumb across a keypad and designated Sinesta-4 a refugee world. That decision was probably taken in an office twice the size of a family home there. There's a solid argument to be made there that she was the first of Blake's 7. The first to believe. Her final story, on a world overrun through no fault of its own, is superbly performed by Sally Knyvette and genuinely quite moving. She's come a long way since those early days and, in many ways, she's become just like Roj Blake. Someone to rally around. Dare to dream of something better. For as long as Jenna Stannis could. An impressive tale.
