Yiff - I had pretty much the same thought when I saw the title of this thread. STill, some of the suggestions above I wouldn't be against - (Franklin, Hamilton in particular) I don't want to pick on them because they really do fantastic work. But, in this day of digital recording, there's gotta be a way to book a recoding day in the USA, hire a local producer or something, patch them in, and record the actors remotely. Maybe to keep costs down you record a bunch of roles at once. Maybe it's more noticeable to me, as an American, and to be fair I haven't heard everything, but every time I do hear someone try to take on an American accent it takes me right out of the story.

Speaking as an American myself, I don't really think the accent is that bad, it's just they're usually regionally specific (Southern) - especially in Shield of Jotunn - rather than the widely heard accent. So far as I can tell, it's not a bad Southern accent, but it's definitely a bit of a stretch to have every American sound like they're from Georgia or Alabama or something.

Yes, but then Hollywood thinks every Briton should sound like a Cockney bootblack or the Queen.

I think BF has come a long way with their American accents. I mean, they sure aren't Minuet In Hell bad any more. Compare that one with the characters in The Gift in the latest Doom Coalition, and they are so much better. They are using a lot more expatriated or just living abroad North Americans (they do use a lot of Canadians). But I have to agree, the earlier audios had a really hard time giving us convincing American accents. What bothers me more than the accent these days are the British sayings and colloquialisms that come out of American's mouths on a lot of these audios. ( For example, Americans don't usually say, "I'll catch you up later." We usually say, "I'll catch up with you later.") This is certainly true with Peri.

Yeah, I've mentioned that before as well, re: Americans using British terms/colloquialisms. "Lift" instead of "elevator"; and "torch" instead of "flashlight" are another two that really bug me.
And yes, they have gotten better, for sure, but even when they do a good job, I still find something off. Just enough to bother me a little but usually not enough to detract from the story, so I usually forgive.

( For example, Americans don't usually say, "I'll catch you up later." We usually say, "I'll catch up with you later.") Neither do whole swathes of the UK. Certainly in Glasgow these mean totally different things rather than two interchangeable ones. "I'll catch up with you later" is said all the time and the meaning is obvious but "I'll catch you up later" would be more likely to mean "I'll fill you in on what you need to know later". You can go miles in any direction in the UK, not even 50 miles, and have completely different dialects, accents, phrases and colloquialisms. So what you might hear as "British sayings" may often be a quirk of the writer's upbringing rather than being part of any great British parlance. They slip through in Dark Shadows despite being signed off by the American licensor (and with American casts) so it's inevitable they're going to happen. Just assume the person was raised by an Aunt from Aberystwyth or an Uncle from Uxbridge and you'll be fine. Ater all...no-one seems to mind the amount of aliens with UK accents!

After all...no-one seems to mind the amount of aliens with UK accents! Speaking of alien voices... I do get annoyed by the sheer number of Big Finish aliens with low, grumbly voices (high, "etheral" voices come in at a close second.) For an audio company, BF has a surprising lack of creativity with its voice-modulations.

The one that screamed at me as a phrase that should have been edited to the US phrase rather than the British one was not in a Big Finish story. It was in an episode of Torchwood Miracle Day when an American character in Los Angeles called the parking lot a carpark. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Agreed, I don't follow Torchwood at all, but that one would have bugged the hell out of me had I seen it.

I think it'd be very interesting to see The Doctor land in the Confederacy and meet Jefferson Davis. We rarely see stories from the Confederate perspective. I know the Fifth Doctor is usually used for Civil War era stories but I'd rather see a different incarnation. I'd love to see a historical with the Ninth Doctor. I also wanted more stories with his full TARDIS team (Rose and Jack,).

I mean there has got to be a website that does nothing but switch out various national, and regional colloquialisms. And if there isn't, someone have at the idea.

Teddy Roosevelt would be my first choice. Astonishing life. You must read the three volume biography by Edmund Morris if you haven't.

There are some out there with lists and such. I've spent some time looking at them in the past, but I don't remember what sites they were, offhand.

Another adventure with Richard Nixon would be fun. He was such an odd man in real life which makes stories involving him much more fun. A post watergate, aging Richard Nixon would make for an interesting story. Heck maybe even have him meet Winston Churchill.

Emma Goldman would be a fine pick, alongside Alexander Berkman. An exploration of anarchy (in the pure ideological sense not in the tabloid sense) to bring around political change told with one of the most fascinating figures of her time.
