Watched 'Horror of Fang Rock' all the way through this evening. It's always been a top ten favourite of mine and in terms of getting the family to sit through, it's got to be one of the most consistently watchable and thrilling tales. Still has little details to pick up upon, scripted and improvised. A Classic.

Watched The Snowmen, The Bells of St. John, and The Rings of Akhaten. A few minutes of The Snowmen was the first I ever saw of the New Series and I came close to becoming a regular viewer, but I was afraid I'd never catch up. (Very fitting in its way because I'm pretty sure the first I saw of the OS was the Sontaran Experiment). It's still one of my favorite New Series episodes.
Also watched The Invisible Enemy. I picked it at random but I'm glad I did. I'm very fond of K-9 and always enjoyable to go back to his debut. It's a pretty decent story too though, and some of the effects look surprisingly good for their time, even some of the ambitious ones.

Genesis of the Daleks (S12 blu-ray)
No matter how many times I've seen it over the years, 'Genesis' is always even better than I remembered! Fabulous script, fabulous performances, timeless brilliance. (And the new 5:1 soundtrack is excelllent too.)

Underworld - Normally something I would happily skip since it's awful and it has no important continuity.....but Mr Polly is a newbie and therefore he must suffer like the rest of us have. The Quest is the The Quest.

I watched Battlefield yesterday and noticed something that I'd never noticed before. When Ace and Shou Yuing are in the chalk circle and Morgaine is making them argue, I hadn't properly heard what Ace says before she nearly steps outside the circle (she calls Shou Yuing a "yellow, slant-eyed..." before getting cut off). I've seen this story about ten times and never noticed. I'd been wondering why the Season 26 Blu-ray had been given an M classification for "Coarse Language" and I'm thinking that's probably why, so I'm expecting the same classification on Season 14 later this year given some of the content in The Talons of Weng-Chiang. I think it will be particularly interesting when they get around to releasing Season 3/animating The Celestial Toymaker and seeing whether they include the original version of "Eeny-Meeny-Miny-Moe" that crops up at one point. Questionable dialogue aside, I actually really like Battlefield. It feels very much like a template for a lot of what would be done with the Seventh Doctor in his life beyond the TV series. It's nice to see the Brig and UNIT back again, and Jean Marsh gives a wonderful performance as Morgaine. This was the first time I noticed the parallels between this and The Happiness Patrol too - when the Doctor has the sword at Mordred's neck he tells the Doctor to "Look [him] in the eye. End [his] life," which I think was a great role reversal. There's just so much to like in this story. Today, I'll be given Ghost Light another go. Let's see if I can properly understand it this time

How they did it is much more interesting imo than the story.

The Runaway Bride and next Smith & Jones. I timed my re-watch of the Tennant era to have Martha's first story coincide roughly with her first BF release.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The Quest is the The Quest. Underworld is one of my favourite stories, including all its awful crapness. It has so many big ideas, some genuine literay allusions, a real sense of cosmic wonder, a storyline that should work a lot better than it does. It gives all the TARDIScrew a chance to shine and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Plus the whole CSO was a bold adventure brought about by a budget crash courtesy of Hinchcliffe over spending the previous season and the ridiculous financial situation of the time as well as a lead actor pushing against a new producer. It's awful in so many ways but the fact that it was made at all makes it fascinating to me. Plus it has Herrick who would have been a much better match for Leela than Andred.

How they did it is much more interesting imo than the story. Agreed. Even on the not so good episodes, the DVDs make it worth your while. Throughout Episode 1, Mr Polly's like "Oh, it's not that bad, you must be exaggerating." Then Episode 2 started. "Oh."

It's certainly very interesting, just not all that pleasant to watch. We all have that one "not good" story we have a soft spot for! The CSO sets remind me of mid-90's PC games, the point-and-clicks where they'd digitize footage of real actors into rendered backgrounds with similarly cruddy results.

Last night I watched the second half of 'The Macra Terror', meaning that I have a week or so to 'pad out' before 'The Faceless Ones' is released. At the minute I'm watching the first half of 'The Brain Of Morbius' (I was planning on re-watching it at some point 'Timeless Children' or no) and am thinking about moving on to 'The Deadly Assassin' on Thursday

Enjoying another run through the 'Behind the Sofas' for the S12 Bluray set. It was a great idea to include these for every story in these sets and while they vary a bit from set to set depending on who is on the sofas, the best ones are delightful viewing.
And that certainly includes these for S12.

Invasion of Time - Better than it's given credit for, honestly. I like the idea of Sontarans taking a crack at Gallifrey.

Revenge of the Cybermen (S12 Bluray)
In 1975 I'd been waiting for four years (my whole 'Doctor Who' life in other words) to see a live Cyberman so this story made a very positive impact. It has that fabulous, far-too-brief TARDIS crew with Tom Baker zinging with first season energy and Robert Holmes' (re-)writing, although he ran out of time so this final version presumably wouldn't have been the final version. And it has Cybermats and invents the golden weakness for the silver giants - gold and posing:how disco these Cybermen are, how 70s!
It has those great Nerva & cave sets plus excellent location filming on the Wookey homeworld (what's that? It's a place called Wookey Hole in Somerset - how disappointing! ) and with the great new CGI on the bluray release now making all the space / beacon / rocket scenes really come to life, the only real flaw for me is that the Vogan makeup could have been Draconian-half-mask-quality, but isn't. But what a cracking guest cast Michael Briant assembled for this story; even with the masks the Vogans' personalities and politics glitter through.
So for me, Revenge is a nostalgic dish best served on bluray, the best (and only) Cyber-story I saw until 'Earthshock' which is incredible when I look back now. Ten years a fan and only saw one TV Cyber-story, once! But I do love it and the novelisation, the only 'recording' we had available back in those days... ('Those sneaking, treacherous tin-men have locked the controls!' 'What does that mean?' 'It means we're heading for the biggest bang in history!' Oh yes. )

Felt like giving Logopolis a spin today. I just really love the music in this one - it just screams 80s Doctor Who and I can’t imagine a story set during this time that doesn’t sound like this.
