Season 25 comes to an end with The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, cringy hip hop ringmaster, 7 juggling (obviously) not a great start. "Oh no not the spoons again", I know how you feel Ace!

Yes Hip Hop to you but perhaps in the future it’s VINTAGE I enjoyed Greatest Show yet again a slightly more element of a mysterious Doctor I actually have listened to the BF prequel but will get around to it eventually

The Sea Devils.
Many, many years ago, during the school summer holidays, it was announced that the planned televised cricket game had been rained off. Instead, said the BBC man, they were going to air an edited version of the 'popular Doctor Who story' The Sea Devils. This is the basis for one of my favourite memories: cup of tea, rain outside, and Doctor Who on the telly for ages!
Now, of course, such an atmosphere is easy to replicate with DVD and Blu Rays and perhaps we don't appreciate it quite as much as when we were slaves to the television schedule - those of us who are ancient enough to remember!
But The Sea Devils, though. No, not those floppy curio-Samurai wobblers from Warriors of the Deep. These are the real thing. The string-vest wearers that makers of Peter Davison's 1984 story actually ridiculed when explaining how they'd 'updated' the monsters. These Sea Devils wade out of the sea and glare, these run at you when you don't expect it; these screech in anguish when The Third Doctor detonates a mine-field with his sonic screwdriver (and RTD got blasted for using the device as a magic wand). Yes, these Sea Devils make the mistake of falling under the spell of Roger Delgado's silky Master - and there are no real winners.
Although it drags in places, this is a superb bit of television. The generous usage of genuine locations, and plenty of extras, gives the whole production a feeling of 'realness'. And for the lack of Brig and UNIT, for the lack of Dudley Simpson's musical moments (Malcolm Clark's soundtrack remains a weird, bubbling favourite of mine), the is quintessential Third Doctor Who. And The Clangers are in it too!

Some decent ideas in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy but let down by all the shortcomings of the era that I just can't get past. & of course as it's set in a circus we have to get McCoy doing all his music hall nonsense. But most importantly is Peggy Mount a future Doctor?

Last night I watched the first half of 'The Deadly Assassin' after getting home from work. Whilst I'm not going to say it's my favourite ever story (ducks for cover), I have been enjoying it.

You've missed out Remembrance of the Daleks. Do you not like that one? Its the McCoy era story I have seen the most, & the least worst one but I am so familiar with it I haven't given it a rewatch.

Sorry I just can't take this 7th Doctor stuff seriously or really engage with it. All feels cheaper & less competent than the 60s era, & I can forgive that era for the technical limitations of the time.

The Curse of Peladon.
I remember this being repeated as part of Doctor Who and the Monsters on BBC One. 1982, this was, when ability to dip into the show's past was not easy at all. So repeat runs like this were to be cherished - and how easy it is to cherish The Curse of Peladon. Dare I suggest it is the perfect autumnal story? Howling storms outside a blasted medieval landscape, while inside it's all fiery torches a-blazing, dripping corridors, dank dungeons and ... a monster lurking in the shadows. Men in thigh-length boots, too, of course.
It's bit wordy perhaps, especially by today's standards, but there's something so right about seeing Jo Grant all decked up to go on a date, finding herself on a deadly cliff-edge when a quick jaunt in the TARDIS goes awry. The characters they meet are like something out of the Trigan Empire comic strip, and their story is of delicious political intrigue involving a gang of the most wonderful monster creations. My favourite remains Actarus, a scowl in a goldfish bowl;but the mighty Alpha Centauri and wonderfully played Ice Warriors are hugely welcome also.
I watched The Sea Devils the other day, and now this. Two of the finest Third Doctor stories available, I think.
