Even though I love BF, sometimes I feel like a lot (but not all) of their recent main DW output is too samey, inconsistenial, and bland compared with their earlier works. I still enjoy listening to them and I still find some gems like stranded, and Missy, and individual bits I like in some of the more standard releases but I feel like they are falling too far into the typical monster of the week formula without much room for character development or new spins recently. I really miss the more experimental releases of early BF.
I also hate to say it but I feel like they watered down 10 a lot especially in regards to how he relates to his companions, I still like his BF stories, but it has me concerned for how they handle other new Who Doctors. I really hope they do a good job with 9 and the others but especially when they get to him one day 12. I want the same level of intensity between New Who Doctors and their companions as on the tv show, I don’t like it when BF plays it like a generic Doctor Companion dynamic and mutes certain aspects of relationships.
I love BFs older output and I am still glad they exist, but I think they need to shake things up a lot more and especially write the New Who Doctors and their companions with more depth and less blandness.

I agree in part, I think especially with the box sets there's too much of the same universe/time is under threat.

But as a way of explaining why that unique form, it's very good, a 'knot in a handkerchief' from RuthDoctor to jog the memories of all her later selves. So she must also have been in London, 1963 (or thenabouts.) As several later incarnations certainly were; One, Seven and Eight at least, and older Susan and River. Perhaps it is a temporal nexus point or whatnot.
EDIT: Or she accessed her own future/the Matrix somehow to learn what the TARDIS would one day transform into. But at that point of timey-wimeyness my human brain starts to give up a bit.

I wonder if a lot of the watering down is a result of The BBC having more influence on Big Finish in recent years? Also with 10 I guess they have a limited amount of time with David so they try to make it as marketable to casuals rather than doing full experimental stuff that doesn’t sell Personally I feel as though there are a handful of great audios but they are saddled in with a lot of generic filler but I guess that’s natural they can’t all be winners

The 'Project' stories for starters, but there are others. And other very different but equally daring ones like 'And the Pirates'.
As someone who came very late to those early years stories, they do seem more experimental and mostly from very good to amazingly excellent. Buying the DLs for £2.99 (and less) made them about the best audio bargains I've ever found.

A recent BF which hit that experimental spot for me was 'Palindrome' in the Eighth Doctor Time War sets. Brilliant.
Also the excellent MR 'Shadow of the Daleks' 1 & 2 with the small "rep company" of actors filling all the many, varied roles.

I especially hope when and if Capaldi comes back BF at least takes a lot of risks with him because I feel like it would be true to his era and he doesn’t deserve some generic run around. Definitely needs to musical episodes as well! And even if it takes a while for them to get Jenna Coleman I really hope they understand their relationship and the importance of it. I really hope they don’t mute or water down the romantic subtext or intensity of their relationship. That’s the one thing I will be very mad if BF messes them up or misunderstands their relationship.

Ooo I will have to check out Palindrome! I did really like Shadow of the Daleks! Reminds me a bit of Asylum of the Daleks in some ways.

See, I’ll have to disagree on both points. Yes there was experimental releases in the early days of Big Finish, but no more than what they do now. They released an experimental release about once a year if you look at it. Now they release more and they release experimental/daring releases often. Yes there was the two project stories or Creatures of Beauty, but there was also Primeval, The Mutant Phase, The Dark Flame, The Apocalypse Element and more are just as "plain" as some stories they release nowadays. Also, in regards to Tennant, I can only suspect you refer to the three Rose stories. All three had moments of romance, but didn’t use them as part of the story. The relationship is written much like early series 2, where the romance is developing. Other than that, I struggle to see what other releases could be at reference here. Finally, and this is one I totally understand is a matter of opinion, but there is a good chance that 12 and Clara will not have a romantic relationship outside of perhaps subtext. There is a lot of people that believe there is a romance between the two, and a lot of people who do not. So while I can understand the dissatisfaction you might have if they don’t, it is their interpretation so they can’t be faulted for following it.

I was more saying I hope that they don’t misinterpret them as father and daughter or completely leave out the subtext.

Yeah i am another in big finish is just as experimental as they always were, more or less. Obviously there is a lit of nostalgia for the early releases as well as they are more accessible so most Big Finish listeners will have heard them compared to the majority of their current output but i don’t think older releases are better than the newer ones. For every And the Pirates there were the genocide machine or the sword of orion or embrace the darkness. Sure there are some outstanding releases but there still is today The first two war master sets are outstanding and they certainly have their dark moments, just as dark as the Project stories imo. Theres also stuff like stranded which i have heard good things about.
There is a lot more releases these days so if you try and listen to everything then yeah it will get a but samey but i do think thats case with most things. I was starting to feel like that but i had a break and now i have listened to over 50 hours the past two months. I imagine ill feel a but burnt out again at some point and if i do il listen to something else/do something else, big finish aren’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future so best advice is to take breaks if its all sounding a bit generic/samey as i do get it i was there a year and a half ago.

Perhaps it wasn't the RuthDoctor who tied the "knot in the handkerchief" but the TARDIS herself. Perhaps when the intimate connection of the telepathic link was established between herself and the old man who stood at her console she gained a sense..a whisper..of just who he was..and just what he might mean to her. The one she thought she had lost. The one who had travelled with her before..the one who had worn so many faces before this one, both male and female. The one with which she had had so many adventures with.. Perhaps at that point she chose to steal him and his granddaughter away from Gallifrey and take them to Earth. Perhaps she deliberately broke the chameleon circuit when the familiar form of a 1960s Police box was chosen in Totter's Yard. Perhaps in all the years, the incarnations, the waifs and strays and adventures that followed she chose to take the Doctor where they needed to be in an effort to remind them of what they once were..until the Master forced the issue when he ploughed the Matrix for secrets..

I’m inclined to agree. When I think back over more recent Big Finish that I own, which isn’t as much as it used to be (I’ve restrained myself somewhat), a lot falls into the category of “oh I remember that was a solid way to spend a hour, no real clue what it was about”. For example Missy Series 2. The Lumiat did something genuinely interesting and the rest...well I dunno. Strax and the Monk were there. Can’t recall what they did really. Eighth Doctor Time War 3, yeah The War Valeyard gave Jayston some interesting material...what was the rest of the set about? I can’t even describe Bliss’ personality, she’s the ultimate non-entity, and there was a whole story dedicated to her backstory in that set. Who knows, maybe Time War 4 fixed that. I wouldn’t know, I didn’t buy it cos it was a choice between that or latest Warner Doctor/Benny set. One was continuation of a consistently creative range with well-characterised leads, the other had Davros on the cover. I may yet get it, one day. I don’t think I quite share your gripes with Tenth Doctor as I suspect it’s his relationship with Rose you’re getting at, which I’ve never cared for much. Didn’t pick up on it as a child, never really got onboard with it since. But I do have my own gripes with how they use Ten. Namely as ground zero for every crossover imaginable. It’s Tennant, surely he sells. Why does he need all these gimmicks? The one time they can get him available enough to record an entire series’ worth of audios, and it’s a catalogue of Terry Nation concepts?! Why??? Did lawyers from Nation estate tell Big Finish they could only keep using the Daleks if gave all the other stuff an outing? Did Tennant fall in love with Dalek Annuals during lockdown? Did Nick Briggs want to write a sequel to Death to the Daleks that badly? And then to follow that, they pair Tennant with the three companions with the most extensively documented post-TARDIS lives, including encounters with multiple other Doctors already! Really pushing the boat out there. I think I’m burnt out on Big Finish’s crossovers fever. “Thing from [x] era of Who meeting thing from [y] era of Who” is not a novelty anymore. It’s just not. The End of the Beginning will be the last multi-Doctor story I touch for some years I think. I just don’t get excited about them anymore.

I think there is good experimental DW BF just not as much with the New Who Doctors and some of the classic Doctors. I actually really think the Masters/Missy releases are very daring. Also oddly even though he’s not my favorite tv Doctor, 5 has a lot darling stories recently. Maybe though I have listened to a lot of just okay/standard stories in a row recently. I am very excited for the 9th Doctor stories to come out and the Eric Roberts “Master!”. Also I guess too since I haven’t been that thrilled with what they have done with 10 that just made me nervous about how they handle other New Who Doctors especially when they eventually get to my favorite, 12. If anyone has any suggestions of newer exciting, experimental releases particularly if there are any good character pieces or unusual settings I would be happy to give them a try🙂

Which seems a very good idea, never underestimate the "old girl" and her attachment to the Doctor.
And that would mean... the First Doctor stole exactly the right TARDIS from the repair bays, the one which remembered all the earlier incarnations, but only because Clara gave him a hint - would that mean that she knew all the previous run of Doctors too? I suppose she might - but why didn't we see them in that TV sequence where she was with each of them throughout Time?! The mystery deepens...

If anyone has any suggestions of newer exciting, experimental releases particularly if there are any good character pieces or unusual settings I would be happy to give them a try🙂 Yeah thats another thing recently i listened to 6 discs in a row of stories i thought was ok to not so ok and when that happens it can be pretty demoralising especially considering how much we spend on these lol been trying to listen to stories with good reputations since tho altho that onlybworks depending on your backlog. I do get you tho i feel 10 and river fixed that issue for me, i really loved how the relationship and connection was portrayed, especially in expiry dating it is really excellent only listened to Volume 1 of the 10DAs but the river song boxset is leaps and bounds ahead of that imo. I have to admit none of the releases this year till this march have excited me but on the flip side theres four releases i fancy in march so i guess it just works out like that. I too hope the 9das are good but we won’t have long to wait at least.

I wonder if a lot of the watering down is a result of The BBC having more influence on Big Finish in recent years? Also with 10 I guess they have a limited amount of time with David so they try to make it as marketable to casuals rather than doing full experimental stuff that doesn’t sell Personally I feel as though there are a handful of great audios but they are saddled in with a lot of generic filler but I guess that’s natural they can’t all be winners In the early MR (which was most of BF of course in the days pre-2005) there are certainly great stories they would surely never be allowed to make now without cuts.
Agreed I applauded big finish for doing darker and edgier stories because doctor who should not be restricted in telling stories from any angles Yeah making the MR 1-50 the price is really good value
