I've now finished the Tenth Doctor Adventures Vol 1 and enjoyed them waaaaaayyyyyyy more than I thought I would (David not being my favourite). It's another step-up for BF's new series who-output and from what they've managed to do with these, I can't wait for volume 2 to be announced (and for Matt Smith to be brought into the fold).
Bring it on ...
Cheers
Tony

It's the same music. That theme was introduced in Voyage of the Damned and last used for End of Time Part Two. No, there IS a difference between the Voyage theme and the Series Four one.

Where you doubt that or not, it's actually wrong to say "It's the same music. That theme was introduced in Voyage of the Damned and last used for End of Time Part Two."
It was much remarked upon at the time, when Partners in Crime aired.

Only by people who noted minor differences between the two.

I've only listened to Technophobia so far as part of my 2016 resolution to space out big releases so everything lasts longer. I liked it quite a lot - the performances were pitch perfect and Donna's relationship to the Doctor felt very true to TV. Lovely to add in the talking over each other to deny when others ask if they're a couple. I always loved that trope in their season together. The story itself was fine, bit BF-by-numbers at first (which you absolutely need in the first story "back" but then a wee bit in we get the lovely spin that for once the tech hasn't gone rogue and it's all the humans that have been tampered with. That's quite clever since you couldn't really do that on TV - the audience would see the hoover, the coffee machine etc, and see easily they're normal so this story used the medium well. Jones The Steam was a bit off a left-field reference. Not sure Ivor-jokes travel much out of the UK but I enjoyed it

Finished Time Reaver today another very strong story but a bit more than a quibble at times I found it very hard to understand what was being said especially the Octupus Aliens. However what I could understand was excellent. I loved the setting of this story it was very fleshed out and I felt I was there with the Doctor, Donna, & Cora. I also loved the concept of the Time Reaver. I thought this story has a good mixture of laughs and drama. It showed both the Doctor's selflessness and Donna's strong compassion. I do wish there was a bit more of The Time Reaver's affects on the Doctor. It was more we were told than shown but I did love that ending dialouge between the Doctor & Donna. However I think my favorite performance in this was Terry Molloy. His character had a really emotional moment and he just completely nailed it. At first I thought I'd listen to these straight through but may save the last story & extras for later in the week. Also read in a review that Jenny Colgan's Ten/Donna novel In the Blood is a sort of sequel to this story so now I want to read it.

One thing that surprised me about this was the remark that they basically just show up and wing it, as opposed to TV, where they memorize their lines first, etc. I figured actors would want to work out how they were going to approach something before doing it regardless of medium, but if it works...it works.

Listened to the first two so far and am quite pleased. As usual, BF delivers consistently when (in my opinion) the TV reboot was always erratic. Technophobia was quite good; Time Reaver was not what I expected based on the title and rather dark in places, which is a positive to me.
I actually had a little trouble recognizing Donna's voice, though it has been years since I watched Tennant's run - I think the last time was after I introduced my wife to Who and she wanted to marathon the show before S6 kicked off.

I'm so proud of elkawho, she went into full Judge Dredd mode & went into bat for team big finish, nice one my dear, if we fans want more Tenth Doctor then we need to do our bit & report piracy. I'm patiently awaiting for my CD's to arrive I'm "SO " excited as David Tennant is my second favourite actor as the Doctor after Tom Baker. Thanks! I didn't end up reporting her because she took the link down. But I'm glad I was able to stop this terrible behavior.

It was you wearing that Judge Dredd helmet that scared her enough to take it down "Elkawhos the law" lol. Seriously good on you my dear.

It depends on the actor I think. One BF Day an Avengers panel implied Wadham was more spontaneous on the day than Howell. I think most actors at least run through the scripts even if just a skim. Obviously it depends on time. I've been in studio a few times and I think you get a range of approaches. It's also based on how familiar the character is as well. When my Short Trips was recorded, Nicola had read the story and marked it up with a vast range of colours to prompt her as she used different voices during the reading.

I think most actors would do that for a *reading*, compared to one part in a script.
In the latter you can have read your script and seen your part and then been 'winging it' on the day - as in waiting to see how the other actors pitch their lines and you react to them. And if you're really good, and especially if you're playing an established part you can turn up and open the script for the first time and just 'do it'.
As for the former, any audiobook reader I've interviewed says 'you do 90% of the work before you reach the studio'.

It's like everything else. There are as many approaches as there are actors. The times that I've done voice work I have walked in the studio having read the work over a few times and read it out loud once or twice prior to recording. I like knowing how the words feel coming out of my mouth but the main reason I like to do a couple of reads is to figure out what phrases and works are tricky. And if I'm doing a lot of talking or have medium to large speeches, I want to find out where the best spots to breath are. Still, I don't do nearly the prep work for audio work than I do for film or TV. That and the whole thing of audio work, while there is a different kind of time pressure involved, it is a different kind of working that is a little looser. I wish there were more audio options available because it is something I'd love to do more of on a regular basis.

Got my Tenth Doctor Adventures set after it only dispatching yesterday! Very quick delivery - other releases I have got either as birthday presents or Amazon so I hadn't actually ordered from Big Finish before but I would certainly do it again. Far quicker than Amazon, with whom I had so many problems with during my Sixth Doctor: The last Adventure order last year.
I really hope they announce a volume two sometime soon.
