How? Rose is the first face Tenny saw, so he "imprinted" on her. And also the first the 9th Doctor saw, which is why he basically 'kissed' her to transfer the time vortex energy from her system into his. I know it's more symbolic but the point still stands. Nonsense, he's the Doctor, he'd have sacrificed himself to save anyone. He'd have done it for Jack, Lynda, even Mickey or Jackie. The last act of the Time War wasn't a Time Lord taking life to protect themselves, but rather a Time Lord sacrificing their life to save another. The ninth Doctor's first thoughts would have been how he took so many lives, it's fitting that his last thoughts were of saving one.

That's a lovely sentiment right there and very true to the Doctor's character.

My point wasn't so much that it was a sacrifice but he did it through what was basically a kiss.
