Intresting statement in this weeks Podcast, "BF don't currently have the rights to the Paternoster gang as a whole" Regards mark687 So maybe just Strax?

The choice of words makes it sound, at least to me, that Strax, Vastra & Jenny are available for BF to use separately but not together as The Paternoster Gang.

That's really weird. Maybe the Beeb still have ambitions for their own Patternoster series? More likely Moffat plans on using them in Series 10, or that the rights for them as a group sit with Moffat rather than BBC and need negotiating separately.

Or the Hulke estate is being truculent over Silurians?

I'm not sure. I reckon they'll probably announce a 10th Doctor Adventures Volume 2 first. Only if they record one. They don't announce anything these days till it's in the can. No, that's not always true.
Doom Coalition 3 has only been recording recently, having been announced sometime ago.
Dark Shadows: Bloodline isn't recorded yet.

Perhaps that is what Steven Moffet plans to showrun when he leaves Doctor Who? It's more likely that he wants to use them in series 10. But I wouldn't be surprised if he uses UNIT with Osgood etc in series 10 and Big Finish already have the rights to them. Perhaps it is simply a case that the BBC or Steven Moffat didn't want any audios to be released until after series 10 has been broadcast and that is the reason that the word "currently" was used, but it does seem strange that they have specifically been omitted from the licence. I wonder if a broadcaster like SKY or ITV could produce a Paternoster Gang series providing there was no mention of Doctor Who??

It could turn out like that K-9 TV series. (I know I mentioned it, sorry.)

Do I want someone else other than the BBC, or Big Finish, to make a Paternoster series? No. Do I think Steven Moffat would want to make such a series? No. I think he will want to distance himself from Doctor Who at least in the short term. Do I actually think a TV company other than the BBC would be able to do such a series? I don't know. I assume Steven Moffat holds their rights, so he would have to be on board and historically he has always favoured the BBC with his work. Also the gang includes a Sontaran and a Silurian, so that would surely make the licensing problematic to say the least. I just can't think why the Paternoster Gang has been excluded from the licence for Big Finish. It makes it even more strange that it sounds like the individual characters, such as Strax, are available!?

Well, I've read somewhere (I think it was Doctor Who Tv) that Moffat has said that he doesn't think a Paternoster Gang Series would work, (apparently it would stop being funny.) if this is true then maybe that's why. If so... Dammit Moffat.

So I'm fine with the idea of no Paternoster gang.
Sounds like there's scope for a Madame Vastra boxset, set before Strax joins, so absolutely not the Paternoster Gang.

Intresting statement in this weeks Podcast, "BF don't currently have the rights to the Paternoster gang as a whole" Regards mark687 That's unbelievably stupid. I hope Big Finish just include them in the same audio not as a gang purely out of spite towards whoever is preventing their appearance as the PG in audios.

BF are hardly likely to anything that could jeopardise any future licence - they make sure they play by the rules. It doesn't preclude them from having the characters appear in other stories, just not as the Paternoster Gang... Cheers Tony

That's like saying 'you can have the new series Doctors, just not with their respective companions'.

(yes I know that isn't anything to do with the BBC) It doesn't really matter though, I'm sure everything is in place for the Paternoster when the license allows and it will happen at some point. Be patient, it'll come (and while we are waiting we have lots of new series stories to get . Cheers Tony

I am curious as to how the Paternoster licensing works. Moffat's said that he feels the Paternoster Gang has played its part, and that he has no desire to continue their story (mind, I seem to recall that he also that about River Song, prior to her appearing in Husbands.) That said, the BBC might well have other ideas. Still, it does indicate that BF's New Who license is a little more complicated than "everything introduced prior to Capaldi." One wonders what other exceptions there are...
