That's really weird. Maybe the Beeb still have ambitions for their own Patternoster series? Perhaps that is what Steven Moffet plans to showrun when he leaves Doctor Who? Isn't he already doing Class?

BF are hardly likely to anything that could jeopardise any future licence - they make sure they play by the rules. It doesn't preclude them from having the characters appear in other stories, just not as the Paternoster Gang... Cheers Tony It shouldn't be a rule of the license in the first place though. That's like saying 'you can have the new series Doctors, just not with their respective companions'. 'As a whole' could easily mean 'we don't have rights to all the PG characters' as opposed to 'we can use all those characters but not at the same time'

'Doctor Who up to the Matt Smith era' should include all the Paternoster Gang characters.

I agree with that. Maybe BF wont use the whole of the Paternoster Gang until after Moffat leaves, if it causes that much of a problem

Don't all the Doctor Who audios need to be approved by the BBC even with the NuWho licence? Maybe they didn't approve of a Vastra/Jenny/Strax spinoff for whatever reason?
Or it might be that Vastra is a Silurian. Hasn't it been 12 years since the last time Big Finish used the Silurians?

BBC's done that before. They've nixed BF using The Master or Davros at various times, when they were active in the show under RTD. The Sarah Jane audios also stopped when she rejoined the show and the Beep started doing their own SJA audio releases.

Yes, my assumption is that it's as simple as meaning Paternoster Gang are in the upcoming episodes and they don't want any conflicts. Although there could be a Silurians rights issue, as mentioned above, it's a long time since they've been used by BF. I'm sure it could be overcome for a Paternoster set, which would presumably sell very well.

Not having the Hulke estate's permission to use the Silurians might be the case rather than problems with the BBC. The BBC does license the rights from Hulke currently, but Big Finish might need to do it separately as well, perhaps for a prohibitive price?

Could be the case, Big Finish haven't used the Silurians for over ten years.
