A few rumors/ news I picked up at Timelash convention today. More in depth report in the convention/ Timelash thread. There I will also post pictures when back home. 1. According to Daisy Ashford, her dad ( Geoffrey Beevers) recorded more stories. He loves doing Big Finish and he absolutely loves playing his Master, where he gets to be pure evil. 2. Sadie Miller is writing stories herself, has done some Who stuff, is also writing novels and just finished a play which she is doing in a theater ( not Who). But she is thinking of doing something for Big Finish. 3. Tim Treloar said stories with Master are on table, but Delgado Master unlikely because Culshaw would have to do double duty. Someone mentioned Beevers, and we got a smile and a „perhaps“, also since Tim is friends with Sasha and Sasha Master stories are coming to Big Finish, this is also a possibility. You heard it here first. 4. News for TV series- apparently the Companion support group will get more screen time, especially Bonnie Langford. This was a bit hush- hush but Janet Fielding blurted it out before everyone could go „shhhhh!“ and „ don’t tell“. 5. Yasmin Bannerman has more stories recorded as Roz Forrester, so more of New Adventures 7Th Doctor stories underway. Recording was done only just recently. Both Beevers and Dhawan (and Jacobi please!) featuring in 3DAs would be delightful, especially since I could see Dhawan going back just to cause mischief for nostalgia of his own past, and Beevers’ Master would be quite frustrated to run into the Third Doctor! Doesn't even have to go back. He was trapped on Earth for 70 years before 2020.

I agree of course. Its got silly of late & increasingly lazy & predictable. Hopefully BF will grow up. I do think there is a place for them as special releases. But this year (particularly with Jackie Tyler meeting everyone under the sun) it's gone too far. Big Finish have always been at their best when not doing these stories. The recent 8th Doctor Boxset is my favourite set this year and its just 8 + Audacity. I think Once and Future particularly showed the issues of characters meeting one another with it feeling like only a few stories could properly play around with its cast too the fullest. I get that is probably a sales thing with characters meeting one-another selling well, but I'm glad it's ending as it'll hopefully lead too Big Finish being more creative.

No returning. - Cass - No crossovers. Return of Daleks, Alex Campbell, and Cass. - Secret Diary of a Rhodian Prince - No crossovers. Return of the Chair. February - Shades of Fear - No crossovers. Return of Vashta Nerada. - The Demon Song - No crossovers. No returning. - All of Time and Space - No crossovers. No returning. - The Return of Jo Jones - No crossovers. Return of older Jo Jones. March - New Frontiers - No crossovers. Return of Ice Warriors. - Strange Chemistry - Crossover Missy/Amelia Pond. No other returning. April - Conflicts of Interest - No crossovers. No returning. - The Robots 6 - Crossover Liv/Robots of Death (obviously). No other returning. - Beyond Bannerman Road - Crossover Rani/Tyler Steele. Return of Clyde, Gita. May - Past Lives - Crossover 4/Kate/Osgood. Return of Monk. - Pioneers - No crossovers. Return of Callen, Doyle, giant maggots. - Comrades-in-Arms - Crossover War/Veklin. Return of Daleks, Case. - Purity Unleashed - No crossovers. Return of Purity. - Daleks! Genesis of Terror - No crossovers. Return of Daleks, Davros. June - Solitary Confinement - No crossovers. No returning. - The Ark - No crossovers. No returning. - The Artist at the End of Time - Crossover 5/Jenny. Return of Curator. - Angels and Demons - No crossovers. Return of Weeping Angels. - Far From Home - Crossover 7/Harry/Naomi. Return of Vashta Nerada. July - Masters of Time - Crossover UNIT/Missy/Harry/Naomi. Return of Vulpreen, - A Genius for War - Crossover 7/Veklin/General. Return of Davros, Daleks. - James Robert McCrimmon - No crossovers. Return of older Jamie, Raven, Krynoids. August - Travel in Hope - No crossovers. Return of Alpha Centauri, Ice Warriors. - Two's Company - Crossover 6/Jackie/Christina. Return of older Harry, the Two. - The Orphan Quartet - Crossover River/Jackie. Return of Krotons, Brooke. - Purity Unbound - No crossovers. Return of Purity. September - In the Night - No crossovers. No returning. - The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50 - Crossover 10/Paternoster Gang. Return of Missy. - Trapped - No crossovers. No returning. - Dying Hours - Crossover Doom/8/Charley. Return of Jackie, Silence, Daleks' Master Plan characters. - Manoeuvres - No crossovers. Return of Daleks. October - Time Lord Immemorial - Crossover 9/Unbound. Return of Liv, Lumiat. - Intelligence for War - No crossovers. No returning. - Rogues Gallery - Crossover Paternoster Gang/Ellie. Return of 8. - The Union - Crossover 8/4/River. Return of Susan, the Union, the Monk. November - Audacity - No crossovers. Return of Cybermen, Charley. - Rogue Encounters - Crossover War Master/Bilis. Return of Yana, Daleks.
As you can see, it's really not as bad as people make out - and I was generous with some of those returning characters. I get that stuff like Once and Future does a lot of crossing over, but it's an anniversary series! Why not? The majority of other ranges are mostly self-contained - though obviously Daleks and Time Lord characters will show up in Time War stories etc.

I think you're making the opposite point you're trying to putting it so easily to skim month by month. How many months feature less than two crossovers or returning elements? Or how many feature ones that don't feel organic? Jackie Tyler and River Song took on Krotons this year. Can you think of a more dartboard aproach to picking what to do than that?
And it's not JUST crossovers. Don't get hung up on that - Charley isn't a crossover in Audacity, she's returning from early in her own run with the same Doctor. But in a range called "a bold new era" they went one story without sidelining the new companion for most of the Cyberman story and then bringing Charley in at the end. Charley who was in a crossover 2 months earlier with Doom. And a returning box set last year with her Doctor. And she's not even part of the Once And Future stuff..
Check out an average release month from back in the day with the main range, a Benny, a companion chronicle and I promise you there was a lot less head scratching going on. This never used to be a subject of discussion till...I don't know- the 3rd time River appeared with McGann? UNIT taking on all the Masters less than a year after River took on the exact same lineup?

And all this X meets Y to run into Z- is NOT working for me.
What were the most memorable stories for me in the past 12 months? - Torchwood with Billis Manger - Albie's Angels (from 8DA) - River "Friend of the Family" - The 3rd Doctor stories - The Paternoster Gang (Trespassers 1 was easily better than Heritage 3+4).
Of these, only the Paternosters featured the 8th Doctor attending the wedding (he was sidelined for most of the story completely).
I just enjoy original stories, and, if possible, with an emotional punch.
Once and Future did nothing for me and I found it pretty tedious for most of the run-time. There was nothing new and original in there. And I gladly missed out on the Jackie meets everyone (the last River set was the only one I did not buy, and I feel no need to do so).

And objectivity? We're fans - talking about what we like or don't like in what we pay for is subjective.

I have to agree. I’ve taken quite a break from BF of late. Must start relistening to the older stuff. Nearly recovered enough to do so I think. I miss the old box set format too (while I’m on a roll…) I do love this forum though and have been lurking! Same here- my interest in BF was pretty much non existent for 6 months of this year.
Well, if you are looking for a really REALLY good box set of stories without any annoying crossovers, I cannot recommend River Song "Friend of the Family" enough. One of the best releases in years.
Hope you will find some stuff that will keep your interest.
Maybe just avoid the Once and Future series.

The majority of other ranges are mostly self-contained - though obviously Daleks and Time Lord characters will show up in Time War stories etc. Okay so I decided to do some basic maths and look at each story you listed as a cross overs average ratings on the site **** ****** compared to non crossovers to see if it was quality thing. On average non-crossovers the average was 7.6, for crossovers was 7.9. So crossovers often lead to marginally better stories. As someone against crossovers I think this might be more a feeling of being burnt out of them after Once And Future then people actually being annoyed with crossovers. I should say my maths isn't perfect as I used boxset ratings rather than their individual stores. However, this does seem to suggest crossovers are not only popular but also better. If it wasn't for the 60th Aniversary releases (Dooms Day and O+F) the amount of crossovers would have been significantly less. So I think I was wrong, crossovers aren't as big of an issue as I thought.

Where does it say "a bold new era"?

<Alternative take>
Perhaps it's not the number of returning elements but the sheer amount of Doctor Who content Big Finish releases? From the mid-2010s through 2021 Big Finish was releasing, every month:
*A Main Range release. *Two DW / Worlds of DW box sets. *A third box set (sometimes DW / Worlds of DW). *A monthly series (Early Adventures, Pathfinder, Torchwood, 4DAs etc.). *A DW Short Trip. *Something else (e.g. book/audiobook).
Also, the number of releases did not drop while, over the years, monthly series were replaced with box sets, meaning more hours of content per month for the same number of releases. (I just took a glance through 2012 and 2022. What a difference!) The end of the Main Range was just another step in that direction. (Am I seeing four box sets per month in 2022/2023?)
Is that what we're exhausted by?

Is that what we're exhausted by? It certainly doesn't help. I would argue Big Finish's talent pool also hasn't grown proportionally, so you've got people having to come up with far more stories in a year than they ever had to before. I suspect some of them are exhausted too. It'll be an unpopular opinion on a Big Finish forum, but I think the output needs to be stripped right back. That won't happen, of course, because once you're producing this level of output it's tough to suddenly reverse that.

I think the x meets y has appeared to go into overdrive is very much a product of the increased output in recent years. So many ranges to produce, just a few I keep an eye out for, 1DAs, 2DAs, 3DAs, 4DAs, 5DAs, 6DAs, 7DAs, 8DAs, 8TW, WDB, 9DAs, 10DAs, 11DCs, The War Master, Gallifrey, NABS, Dairy of River Song.
Some of these ranges are 2 - 3 releases per year, I can't imagine the coordination and endeavour needed to keep producing new stories year in, year out.
I have a few ranges I always invest in but for the most part, I wait until I see some reviews first. Based on the last few years, Big Finish has still still consistently produced some absolute gems.
River Song: Friend of the Family
The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: Blood and Steel
The War Master range is always solid gold.
War Doctor Begins: He Who Fights Monsters
The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles Geronimo! & All of Time and Space. Dudman's 11 is brilliant, and the stories really top notch.
Although not my favourite, I hear only good things about 3DAs.
I'll always listen 8DAs, which for me, are always entertaining, even though this years twist wasn't the direction I was hoping for.
I have to say, my only real dissapointment this year has been Once and Future. Other ranges I don't regularly engage with, are more about personal taste than a poor product.
I think the key thing to remember with the current Big Finish output is that to listen to everything is to gorge on the most magnificent and rich buffet, but too much of a good thing will leave you with the audio equivalent of indigestion.

But I think BF just accept the audience they have, a small audience but I think maybe a loyal one that just buy everything regardless.

I agree. Less is more. Focus on quality not quantity. But I think BF just accept the audience they have, a small audience but I think maybe a loyal one that just buy everything regardless. I think it'a easy to say this when you're not the staff member/freelancer doing the writing, sound design, acting etc. for whom BF drastically cutting back their output would likey less to a concomitant drop in income.

But so would a drop in numbers of people prepared to pay for the products, which could happen if the quality is not perceived to justify the purchase price anymore. As it is, next year's release calendar is currently very stripped back. I don't think it'll stay that way though, I think the anniversary will be a splurge of announcements in the hope of attracting new fans.

In terms of the writing pool, it’s definitely grown and the workload has eased, for me at least.

You know what, I’ll clarify that a shade.
One thing people tend to forget both in terms of the talent pool and the workload on the existing one is that release order doesn’t reflect production. This is most obvious with the 4DAs where everyone knows we’re a few years ahead, but it’s by no means the only range.
This means that there are all manner of new writers we’re working with but it might be a while til we get to their stuff actually being released. By which time there’s every chance they won’t seem like new writers any more!
