RushmoreOn a bit of a Wes Anderson binge. Another great one. Quite a few uncomfortable scenes The bit with the kid stopping the car killed me! XD Dances With WolvesAfter hearing this film compared to Avatar a bunch, I was always under the impression it would bore me. It was utterly enthralling. Happy Death DayOnly caught the ending. Really regret it, because from what I saw, it looked like a fun as hell film, and I would have liked to have watched it properly.

This evening I wrapped up the first series of the MCU with 'The Avengers'. Whilst it's never really been a favourite of mine (who threw that?!), I've always enjoyed it as a character piece... Co-incidentally, one of my relatives in Canada (who we should have been visiting had Covid not happened) has also been watching it with her children today.

Cloverfield - One of the better monster movies from the last 20 years. I think this film does a lot of things right. It is very committed to its premise and tone. While the opening party scene goes on slightly too long, it is a useful conceit to establish the characters. Once things go sideways, it's got a relentless pace to it. It depicts the destruction of the city and the ensuing chaos from a street-level perspective very well.
It's one case where Bad Robot's patented "we won't tell you what's going on routine" actually works in the story's favor. Many things are left unknown and ambiguous. I think that a little mystery gives a film longevity. You don't want to be left confused, but to be left wondering is not such a bad thing.
There are a couple of flaws. Firstly, I don't think our cast of monster fodder is all that compelling. Hip young urbanites who are not particularly interesting. Secondly, I don't like the design of the monster. They did very well to keep it seen only in glimpses throughout the film, but at the end you get a long look at it in broad daylight, and for my money it's kinda dorky looking. It undermines that fear of the unknown they otherwise cultivated quite expertly.

Firewall An okay Action Thriller with Harrison Ford. Love how they actually made him a bit clumsy in places, like an actual person was jumping down from places

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Very much a guilty pleasure. If such a thing even exists
Always felt the world of Extraordinary Gentlemen would be ripe for a television or even audio series adaptation. Mind you, getting the rights for certain characters would probably be more trouble then it’s worth.

The Magnificent Seven Still a classic and what a cast. Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, James Coburn, Charles Bronson. Just perfect

The Angriest Man in Brooklyn
(Another random YouTube Vid suggestion. Comedy Drama one of Robin Williams last performances. An angry stressed out Lawyer [Williams] annoys a junior Doctor [Maiia Kunis] so much during his routine physical that she tells him he's going to die in a very short time, so he sets about trying to make amends with his estranged family, unfortunately a senior colleague later compliments her on a accurate diagnosis so she sets out to find him.)

Three Amigos Hadnt seen this film in years. Brilliant and Funny. I was visiting my Grandad in the garden yesterday. A plane flew over-head, and we couldn't resist doing the Mail Plane bit. Apparently when my mum was little, Three Amigos was one of the few tapes they owned, and they watched it a LOT. It's one of those films we can practically quote word for word.

'Continuing on with the MCU, I've watched 'Iron Man 3' and 'Thor 2 - The Dark World', both of which I enjoy fine, but have never 'loved'.
At the moment I'm about half-an-hour in to 'Captain America 2 - The Winter Soldier'

Recently... Back to the Future Part III - Once again, a classic. I think this is my least favourite of the three, but that's by no means meant to be denigrating, all three films are excellent. This is one of few trilogies where I never have any urge to watch just one, I only ever want to watch the whole trilogy. The way it's constructed is just so brilliantly complete. Time Bandits - Very....Terry Gilliam. I honestly don't know how else to describe this. Wasn't into it. Raiders of the Lost Ark - On a real classic movies kick here... Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - And again... The Borderlands / Final Prayer - As suggested by someone here in this thread (apologies, I forget who). It is 1:20am here and I just finished watching this. I think a bit of pee came out Great suggestion!

Over lunch today I re-watched 'The Avengers: Age Of Ultron' which was fairly decent.
At the moment I'm currently watching 1954's 'Jail Bait', my first full Ed Wood film (at university I did see 'Plan 9', but that was more of a background watch). I can neither confirm nor deny the fact that this is my 175th film since lockdown was announced in mid/late March. Jesus H Christ.
EDIT - You know what? Whilst I will say that the constant use of Spanish-style guitar music did start to grate on me towards the end, that actually wasn't half bad! (Genuinely, I don't think I'd have minded if it was a little longer...)

Brazil - Part two of Terry Gilliam's "trilogy of imagination." There was stuff in this one that I enjoyed quite a bit more than Time Bandits. Something about the way it sort of does a dystopian 1984 thing that's marred by an almost Douglas Adams-eque absurdity and multiplied by an over-the-top-ness that I associate with The Fifth Element, really worked for me (and clearly, there's a lot in this movie that influenced the Central Bureaucracy in Futurama). Unfortunately I found it WAY too long, I was ready for it to be over about an hour and a half in, and then saw that I still had another hour to go. Gallipoli - This one really threw me. Generally I enjoy seeing movies that show well-known wars from a non-traditional (read: American or British) point of view, so I was expecting to like this, but it really didn't land for me. The pacing and structure of the movie felt all wrong; I did not care for how the movie was 95% juvenile 'ho ho, boys will be boys!', followed by a final five minutes of 'horror of war.' I understand they were going for the reality of war shattering the innocence of youth, but to me it was just a poorly structured experience that left me bored after the first 20 minutes and then really not caring by the time they got to the final drama in the closing seconds. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - The second-best of the trilogy. Just an absolute ball of a movie. Thank god they never did make a fourth movie, right? The Adventures of Baron Munchausen - At long last, I think I'm ready to commit to saying that I'm just not a huge fan of Terry Gilliam's films. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that they COMMIT to what he's doing, and the production and costume design is always beautiful, but focus is so much on production look and individual scenes that the larger stories he tries to tell are just so messy/inconsistent/poorly paced that I find I don't really enjoy them. I will say though that this probably my favourite of the "trilogy of imagination."

Biggles: Adventures in Time (1986)
Best known for being Peter Cushing’s last performance, this film is frankly ridiculous with the addition of a completely unnecessary science fiction element. Still ever so enjoyable though and the soundtrack is fantastic.
Unlike some of his fictional contemporaries, I do think that you still could reinvent or introduce the character of Biggles to a modern audience.

I remember it through their placing a full page colour advert in DWM when it came out. Seemed an obvious place to promote it. Still haven't seen it though, as I have never come across it on TV and bypassed it as a VHS rental, which was the only other time I came across it again.
