The Foreigner. A decent late career movie from Jackie Chan, more in the mould of Liam Neeson action thrillers than his kung-fu films. The problem is Chan's english is just not good enough to really emote when needed in the more dramatic scenes.

How did you watch WW84 @timelord007 ? To quote the curator, i’m sure he “acquired it in remarkable circumstances” The great healer provided but forgot to mention this film would not be a calming experience but a full on rant for 150 minutes.

Very good film this still hasn't had a official UK release on DVD or Blu ray as I'm currently brought most of JC films on Bu ray.

Max Winslow & The House Of Secrets - Not a favourite watch of all the ones I've seen recently, but still pretty decent as "kids films" go. I'm sure that 12yr old me would have loved it...

He takes a bit of a backseat in this one, more action done by the younger blander cast. It's like a low budget attempt to do a Fast & Furious/Mission Impossible/Bond film with some terrible CGI.

Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)
Very much the weak link in the Johnny English trilogy. Nice to see Ben Miller make a return though.

Weekend Hobbitathon
One of the great childrens' fantasy novels and like the others (Narnia, the works of Alan Garner - and now 'Harry Potter' I guess though for me those are only films ) it has a lot of depth to explore beneath the 'adventure' surface. I was very impressed by how well the film trilogy brought this to the screen, the shifts in tone, the comedy and the adventure and the darkness. There's a LOT of CGI padding to make one slim volume into a film trilogy, but despite being rather a Tolkien purist, I enjoyed them very much on first viewing - so here goes for another. Hang on - do I have my pocket handkerchief? Yes. We're good to go!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Of the three films, the first is most closely drawn from the book and might well be my favourite for that reason. After the CGI spectacle of the fall of Erebor, some people get impatient with the light-hearted 'hobbityness' of the Bag End scenes and the time it takes to get the company of Erebor out on the road, but I love that part and was impressed that they had the nerve to take the time and put in the apparently comical, bumbling behaviour of the dwarves as Bilbo first sees them, their plate-washing song and all. And the contrast with the vision of far lands and great deeds conjured up by Thorin's song - the song which first gives Bilbo the wish to live up to the role in which Gandalf has cast him. About the only criticisms I would make are: Gandalf shouldn't really have been displeased to see Saruman at the White Council, at this stage he did not suspect anything was wrong. Only much later did Gandalf realise that Saruman was growing interested in the lands around Mirkwood and Dol Guldur because he knew the Ring was somewhere in that region and already wanted it for himself. And Radagast, though well played by our own Seventh Doctor (who knows, perhaps he really was Radagast as well as Merlin ) is imo made to look a bit ridiculous by the bird's-nest suit and other trappings. He was 'a worthy wizard, a master of hues and changes of shape' and I would have liked to see Radagast using more of that power to confuse and elude the orcs instead of sledging with rapidly running Rhosgobel rabbits! The rest runs satisfyingly more or less as per the book, including even the more improbable bits like the stone giants and the singing goblin king! (Oh possums, I never expected to find "Dame Edna" himself appearing in a Tolkien film, even as a voice artist! Great fun. ) I thought the additional elements from LOTR and the Appendices and other writings were all fitted in well too. And it all looks and sounds wonderful, a delight to watch.

Revisited TRON Legacy tonight. Always a delight. I like the world building. I like Michael Sheen. I like the idea of the two Bridges (even if that uncanny valley is terrifying) but man, is Garrett Hedlund boring. From that Sam Worthington and Jai Courtney school of really boring actors who keep getting work. It's quite baffling that Tron - a cult movie, sure, but an infamous flop - somehow got a sequel that cost $200mill, about the price of an Avengers film. It was never, ever gonna recover that once the marketing costs and box office cut came out. Still, glad it happened as it gave us some lovely visuals and it's true legacy is not Tron (why are they always called Tron when he's always a minor character and the films aren't about him?) but rather the breath-taking score by Daft Punk. My friend worked in Richer Sounds, a very high end audio outlet in the UK and that soundtrack is what they used in store to demonstrate their hi-fis and the like. That and Dark Side Of The Moon on SACD.

I watched this a few years ago in a Pierce Brosnan marathon (worth it to discover the WONDERFUL film The Matador - recommended to anyone who loved In Bruges) and I really quite liked it. It's got Jackie Chan walking about Belfast with a blue carrier bag like he's just got out of the off-licence. That's a very surreal sight in itself.

They're his "The Raid" films for me. Breathtaking.

Black Sheep (NZ, 2006). I was in a silly mood and nothing is sillier as a horror comedy about zombie sheep laying waste to New Zealand. Also brings back good nostalgic emories to my time in NZ (where I was introduced to this masterpiece of the NZ movie industry).
