Sure it isn't the best story overall and of the Pertwee Season finales it is the weakest, but it's just so much fun. The Master and Ingrid Pit are great together and Kronos is a brilliant idea if poorly realized.

The real answer: Because the cool kids in fandom took to mocking it and the crowd either joined in or shut up.

Its not my first choice.of Pertwee story to watch. Its really only worth it for Pertwee and Delgado. I do like the idea of an object being in the same place at both times.

For me the production values just go to pot once the action shifts to Atlantis.

I don't really mind it myself, it's got a few things here and there to recommend it (the failed time ram, the Brigadier's panic over losing the convoy, the experiments by Dr. Ingram), but it may just be a touch too long. It might be the decamping to Atlantis at the end that people frown upon, I remember a similar reaction to The Invasion of Time when the Sontarans turned up.

Let's see... This is one I've only seen once, but besides the doomed acronym TOMTIT, wasn't the Time Monster kind of late in actually appearing in the story, in spite of it being a six-parter? Still an interesting story, though - no reason to hate it.

If you like The Time Monster, check out Craig Hinton's Sixth Doctor Past Doctor Adventure The Quantum Archangel. It's a sequel to this story. Word of warning, if you have a drinking game where each continuity reference means taking a shot, you'll end up with liver poisoning.

Hated? Not by me!
It's not the best 3rd Doctor story by any means but it has it's moments.

There's some great interplay and character development between the Doctor and the Master ... how can anyone hate it?
Cheers

I've only seen the Pertwee serials once each...and honestly I can't remember anything about this one...The Time Warrios on the other hand was one of my favourite Pertwee stories.

The real answer: Because the cool kids in fandom took to mocking it and the crowd either joined in or shut up. Or maybe, just maybe, and this might seem a radical thought, some people actually don't like it. I came off as a little pompous saying 'The real answer...' for 'In my opinion...', and I apologize for that. I used a little literary license, but I definitely didn't mean to imply that someone who doesn't enjoy 'The Time Monster' isn't entitled to that opinion and couldn't have arrived at it on his or her own. Very sorry. The OP asked why 'The Time Monster' is 'hated', which is obviously a broad generalization, but - I think - a fair one. My response was in the same spirit, trying to address why that serial is collectively unpopular. Which it definitely is, having polled 187th on the DWM 'Mighty 200' list. Now, it is my recollection that it used to be far better liked, and it is my belief that the loudly spoken words of a few 'influencers' have soured the gestalt opinion of fandom, which of course is a known and understood phenomenon (see for example Trump, Donald...or have I just gotten myself into more trouble? ). I happen to like 'The Time Monster' just fine, but I respect that you don't. Thanks for keeping me honest. Have a nice day.

It might be the Atlantis bit that had people clearing their throats. A bit too on the nose with the mythology?
