Hell Wind1781 - a few months after the Marie duPres segment of The Crimson Pearl A young Josette Du Pres is terrified for her life as a deadly hurricane smashes into the island of Martinique. She rushes for shelter but she’s not the only one fighting to survive…The duPres family have been in Martinique some few months after the Crimson Pearl bade them leave Paris. A deadly storm is brewing. Josette is hurried off to the hurricane house, where she encounters young Angelique, who is a servent at the main House, Josette's house. Angelique's mother is still around, and the pair work as healers. I guess this hand-wavingly happens somewhere around the beginning of Angelique's Descent. The latter half is a chilling description of the destruction wrought by the hell storm. It's... not pretty. Marie did not go kindly A powerful piece, depicting mainly just, the storm, and the interactions of those waiting it out. Communion1861 - in the midst of the Civil War 1861 and War rages across America. The preacher Elias Trask and his young son Gregory, are hiding from men who wish to kill them. But something else is already in their hiding place…Elias obviously passed on his quicksilver tongue to his son. He is in the midst of a saloon, watching the soldiers indulging their urges until daybreak, when they will be enemies again. He is, in particular, ditasteful at one Carson Janks, a pimp. Elias seems genuine in his Lord's work, though the Trasks are rather good at appearing so at first glance, so perhaps it's too soon to tell.
Ah, there it is. Ol' Elias has found a young woman who catches his eye. So of course he must "save" her from this womanhouse. And for only three dollars! What a sly old bastard he is.
And suddenly, we switch from Elias narrating his prayers to gunfire and Janks on their heels, Elias interrupted in the midst of his pontificating by the pimp having found out about him absconding with one of his girls.
Young Gregory has been shot, and I suspect that Chastity, the woman that Elias has freed, may be a bit more sinister than she appears.
It's an interesting narrative. A winding tale of Elias, misguided though he be, trying to do right in his own way. It's almost a commedy, the bad after bad that continues to dog their steps.
It's basically a single-hander with incidental sounds and effects giving life to the other characters.
And the Dark Lord continues to gently (okay not so gently) guide the Trask family towards their destiny. The Ghost Ship1968 - In the midst of the Original Series The warlock Nicholas Blair has transformed the witch Angelique into a vampire to serve him. Her love for Barnabas Collins, though, will never die…Now, I've not yet reached this part of the original series, so hopefully there's nothing here that I'm not going to get. BF are pretty good about that though. Side note, the music and sound design of this set has been spectacular, using cues and music from the original series. Now, wait, is she a ghost or a vampire or what? Interesting premise. Angelique wafting about the cliffs, conversing with the ghosts of the widows. They've promised to help her with Barnabas if she were to somehow be able to return their lost sons and husbands to them. Oh hey it's Nicholas Blair. I can't wait to meat him in the show proper. Ah I see, this literally takes place amongst and between the events of episodes 555 & 556. Oh, I'm sure Angelique summoning the lost and drowned sailers back to their homes will end well. I feel kind of sad for those skeletal sea men returned home. Those poor pitiful bastards. A Face from the Past1986 - Paris, briefly, and then Collinsport. Elizabeth Collins Stoddard is returning to her home town of Collinsport. But on the train, she is stunned to see the young man who was once the love of her life. Could he also have returned to the town that once tore them apart? This is probably the one I was most looking forward to. And it begins, as always, with a train, bringing a woman to Collinsport. Liz has grown homesick, and is returning to Collinsport from Paris. She sees her first love in the crowd, but unaged, bright and young. His name is Victor, apparently. She hasn't seen that face in over 40 years, so, early 40s or so. But alas, this isn't Victor, it's a young Patrick, a realtor, who happens to be the one in charge of selling some of the estate properties that David's put up for sale. Apparently the old caretaker's cottage was to be Liz & Victor's first home. Unfortunately things didn't work out. Ah, I see. Well, that really puts a wrench in me trying to make the novels fit with the audios. Damn. Just you wait, Trace, I'll figure out how to make it all fit! Still, a good story. Marie Wallace does a good job with it. I wouldn't be upset to hear her take over for Liz in the full-casts, though I'm not sure how well that would mesh if Jessica is also in the play. Eh I'm sure BF could figure it out. These were good! A shame I'm through them already, but hey four more sets to look forward to over the course of next year!

Well I've lost my job, so must find ways to pass the time while sending out applications. Fortunately BF provides for some wonderful listening while I hunt

Oh, sorry to hear that! That actually now seems staggeringly insensitive of me. Sorry!
Glad that Big Finish is providing some light in the darkness, though.
And I hope this barren period is soon behind you.

Thanks for the covers, muckypup. I may well end up listening to these on my Kindle in which case your covers will be quite helpful indeed.
I don't know why I didn't notice sooner but all of the sudden it occurs to me that the cover of Haunting Memories might have done with a bit less saturation, it almost makes it seem like the logo is getting lost in the black background. Perhaps there's a wee bit to be saved on ink?

Listened to Communion. I absolutely love what BF (and Jerry Lacy, of course) have done with that sanctimonious old buzzard Trask. I'd even go as far as to say he is Dark Shadows' most continually fascinating character, and this is another great moment for him. I'm really enjoying these bite-sized DS and hope they continue for ages to come. Looking forward to hearing 'The Ghost Ship' and 'A Face from the Past' over the next few days - especially the latter, about which I've heard some very positive rumblings.

The strength of these first two anthology releases just makes me really excited for the upcoming ones And I don't know why, but for some reason I wasn't really expecting much in the way of storyline significance to occur in these. The Doctor Who Short Trips are mostly just bite-sized adventures of little consequence. Really good stuff, to be sure, but nothing major, so the fact that we're actually getting important events that have implications in these Bite-Sized Dark Shadows releases (you will never convince me to not call them that) is pretty grand.

I really liked most of the stories in this. My favorite was Communion. When I started listening to Dark Shadows, the Trask audios were my least favorite. My mind has been completely changed over time. I just loved this story.
My least favorite was Hell Wind. I usually like Angelique's stories but I this one didn't grab me at all.

Just finished The Ghost Ship. I cannot put into words how much I love these productions, more than any non-full-cast productions since the early single-disc releases. This particular story is a wonderful slab of suitably creepy atmospherics built around the endless turmoil of the unlife of Angelique, beautifully told (and written) by Lara Parker, who still sounds exactly as she did back in the television series. All this backed by subtle special effects, and an eerie fusion of the music of David Darlington and Robert Cobert (the scenes with the widows, and Barnabas' heartfelt words to Angelique sound as intoxicating as anything BF have ever done). Absolutely 10/10, 100%, A+ etc. Never never stop these terrific stories!

I think I enjoyed the Trask story the most out of this set. Just can't get enough of that lot

Communion by Adam Usden
A very nice character piece for Elias Trask, a solid 8/10. I think Hell Wind will be next...
