He would if he wants Kate protected, and/or has decided to weaponise her and deploy her on the Doctor to get "one up" on him Why do i have the thought of a Weaponised Kate pretty much doing a Home Alone to The Doctor lol

Would this pave the way for a UNIT story with Tim Treloar as 3? Although the Brig would have to be in Geneva or something. Perhaps in another Third Doctor set as opposed to a UNIT box.

And when will we see (oh please!) Klein appear in UNIT? That would be very nice indeed. Klein and Kate, there's a little face off worth listening to.

Now we have the Third Doctor back on audio and a regular series of releases, it's crying out for one story in each box set to be a proper UNIT story with Jo, Yates and Benton. (And as you say, the Brig. off arguing with his superiors in Geneva, again. He could still be involved 'off-stage' by deploying resources on request, etc.) I wondered why there was no Mike Yates in the second 3DA set - perhaps this is why? Now they've done "The Two UNITs", can we please have the real UNIT back (as far as is possible) for a few more Third Doctor stories?

I think BF really needs to recast the Brigadier if they are going to do UNIT stories with the Third Doctor. It will just get ridiculous if he is always out of town, and he was an essential part of the Third Doctor era. Since that series has a recast Doctor anyway, I don't think it would be a big deal if they recast the Brigadier.

Once you have recast The Doctor nothing should be off the table. If you are going to recast the main role then a companion or secondary character shouldn't be an issue, so yeah, The Brigadier should be recast for 3rd Doctor/UNIT audios.

Personally, I'd be open to this and would see it as a compliment to the excellence and lasting popularity of Nicholas Courtney's most famous role. They have very successfully recast 'my' Doctor so with that milestone passed, I suppose any recasting would be possible. The only issue (as always in 'Doctor Who'!) is Time. How many years need to pass before BF would feel it was respectful to recast such an iconic character & actor? Many Doctors, but only one Brigadier.

Many Doctors, but only one Brigadier. Personally, I draw the line at any actor that has worked with BF before. I am happy for recasts of the first 3 doctors, Ben, Barbara, Dodo etc. but I'm not sure how happy I would be for others who have already recorded stories (Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane, the Brigadier) to be 'replaced'. As much as they are missed, I think we should be content with their stories that we have had. That said, now that John Levene is on board I have no doubt that there will be more 3rd Doctor UNIT stories generally.

I suspect they're avoiding it as Courtney's death is still relatively recent compared to Pertwee's when they recast the Doctor.

I'd rather characters played by actors who have worked with Big Finish before passing weren't recast. We've had Nick Courtney as the Brigadier, Caroline John as Liz Shaw, Liz Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and Mary Tamm as Romana. I don't have much of an issue with recasting roles played by actors who never got the chance to do Big Finish, or haven't wanted to do it despite plenty of opportunity, like Barbara, Ben and Dodo. As long as Big Finish treat the recasting very sensitively, and all indications are that they have, then I see no problem with it.

Set the story in 1977 and he could be on an undercover assignment pretending to be a maths teacher at Brendan school. when he meets a potential future self there it causes an abortive timeline (like the Day of the Daleks one) wherein he forgets he wasn't really retired and never goes back.

As long as Katy Manning is still with BF, they can do stories without Liz or Sarah Jane. However, it isn't really possible to portray the Third Doctor era accurately without the Brigadier.

How about bringing Jeremy Fitzoliver AKA Richard Pearce into the fold? Okay, Sarah Jane was his introduction to the Doctor and he seems a bit wet but it could work.

The character IS a bit wet but we are rather short of Third era characters, no Brig, one remaining TV companion...ok, a decent complement of UNIT but...

Having had my interest in the UNIT series brought to a head with the Silenced Box-Set, I've also preordered this series. And reading this news piece makes me very excited for it. I'm going to be honest - I still find Kate rather under-performed. I can understand emotional detachment, but the actress's line reading is very flat and makes her pretty uninteresting. I wonder if the more rounded Jo, Benton and Yates bring her to life, or highlight her lack of character? I look forward to finding out.

I was going to do the £80 bundle on the UNIT titles in May but given that the Ninth Doctor Chronicles come out the same month, I just spent a load on a Nintendo Switch and I'm currently learning to drive, I don't think I'll bother just yet. This set does sound great though.
