Watched the first season of Only Murders in the Building over the past couple of nights. What a cracking series! It completely sets up the true crime and podcasting obsessions by delivering brilliant examples of them both. I love the trio and can’t wait to get stuck into the new season. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to get round to it.

Yes, I admit, they do steal a lot from Star Trek, however, they also seem to improve upon it.
Not to go off on a tangent or anything, but man, modern SF would be so much richer if folks felt freer to steal from Star Trek. So much good SF in the 90s and 00s never even got made because producers felt like the concepts were too similar and didn't want to compete, or because they didn't want to risk being labeled a "rip-off" (just look at the ancient drama surrounding Babylon 5). I haven't seen the new Orville stuff yet, so I can't comment on its quality, but I think it's incredibly valuable that it exists, continuing to iterate on core themes and concepts of Roddenberry's Trek. Especially in our current, bleak era.

Especially in our current, bleak era. The great thing is, for me (and I have been a huge Trekkie for more than 30 years now) it does not "feel" as if Orville is ripping off Star Trek. As you say, they take the ideas and concepts and not only repeat but improve it.
My favorite example which I always like to bring to that argument: The season finale of season 2.
If you are a Trekkie, and familiar with Voyager, it is blatantly obvious that this is stolen from "Timeless" (the Voyager-in-ice time-travel episode).
This is already a great Voyager episode.
But Orville takes the script, and improves upon it and makes it an even greater episode.
There are a few other examples of this.
And I hope you get to see season 3 soon- I am pretty sure you will love it.

I'm glad you're enjoying it...if it wasn't already so close to the end, I'd be ready to throw in the towel Do you feel like elaborating? I think season 3 is the best one yet. It is much more serious, less of the juvenile humor (some of the early episodes were just blown up jokes, albeit with an important message. I am NOT a fan of juvenile humor, as you might be aware- it always makes me gringe) and the society comparisons and messages are much less on the nose that previously. Yes, some of it is still a bit heavy handed, but less in the face and better handled. They are getting the hang of it.
Many of the stories also make me cry, so they seem to get me emotionally invested, something that has not happened it season 1.
Yes, I admit, they do steal a lot from Star Trek, however, they also seem to improve upon it.
Just really not enjoying it. I was appalled to my core at how they treated and talked about suicide in the premiere. I find it really gross that Seth MacFarlane's latest much-too-young-for-him girlfriend was cast in a main role and is getting inordinate amounts of screen time at the expense of established characters. A lot of the time I'm finding that the A- and B-plots just do not mesh or compliment each other (which is the entire point of the A-/B-plot structure). In approx. 75% of the episodes so far this season I've found the plots bland and uninteresting. I don't need a ton of humour, but I really deeply dislike how serious and self-important the show has become--which is not a sin in and of itself, but treating such a bad run of episodes so deathly serious just makes it all the more unbearable. And the runtimes...[Richard Nixon voice] my god. It feels like every episode this season is a 40 minute script, dragged out over a 70-75 minute runtime because they feel every minute of it, absolutely exhausting to sit through. I find myself taking multiple breaks every episode just to finish them, which is a really, really bad sign. It hasn't been completely terrible, like I'll happily and without reservation say that I thought the episode about Topa was terrific, and scattered other moments. But on the whole I've thought this season is a massive nosedive after previous seasons. After finally finishing last week's episode, I found myself sitting on the couch looking at the credits rolling and thinking to myself "if this is the last season, I'm good with that."

It's a gorgeous show to look at in terms of sets and costuming, it's very well written, and the lead trio are absolutely charming to watch. Never in a million years would I have guessed that Selena Gomez could hold her own opposite Steve Martin and Martin Short but....goodness me, can she ever! Season 2 has been very enjoyable so far too!

Thank you for expanding upon your previous post and explaining.
This is interesting.
Yes, my impression is pretty much the opposite, but I always find it interesting to find out what other people think and what their points are.
The not meshing plot-threads are a good point, and I have been aware of that, but did not really mind/ put too much thought into it.
Yes, this was very obvious is last weeks episode (the latest episode from this week is still not live on Prime). I did actually once think "this feels like two different shows in parallel". But I got too emotionally invested and then I started crying and did not care anymore.
So I get your point.

This show truly captures the embodiment of Superman.

No spoilers from me, however the news sites here have spoiled a lot.. !

I just love the Orville. "Midnight Blue" made me cry again. Beautiful. This is what should be done, also globally, to all the would be dictators out there. Just stop appeasing the bullies and stop taking their crap. At the best, it makes you a hypocrite and at worst it makes you complicit. Sometimes you just have to stand up, even if it means you get your bottom kicked. Very powerful message.

Regards mark687 I would guess that I may have seen her talk to interviewers around/about when she made her Who appearance, but otherwise...nope! I take it she has or had something to do with the show? I know her from Who and that she was (or still is? No idea) a singer but that's about it.

Regards mark687 The difference would be that Guy Pearce(who most won't know nowadays) and Russel Crowe became big in Hollywood and starred in big movies. Minogue hasn't been in anything major for acting apart from Neighbours, and nowadays doesn't have much in the way of popularity as a singer in North America

Yup, exactly. And it's also been my experience that vanishingly few people here watch soaps at all, much less ones from overseas. Background noise in community rooms at retirement homes, but that's about it.

She may... or may... have a scene this week.. It was filmed in between scenes of the new Barbie movie. That infamous wedding episode in the 80's was watched by about 20 million Aussies- our population back then wasn't even 30 million. It was "of the times". Chris Hemsworth (Thor) got his start on this show too- as well as his 2 brothers, Heath Ledger's 1st role was on the rival tv show soapie too.
